Chapter Thirty-Five

Later that morning at the police station, Sophia found herself unable to concentrate on what she needed to get done.

Jacob noticed. “What’s on your mind, Soph?”

Sophia looked up. “Huh? Oh sorry Jake, what were you saying?”

Jacob just laughed and shook his head. “You must have had some night last night, Soph. I’ve never seen you this distracted.”

Sophia blushed a little. “Yeah, sorry about that. Last night was… interesting.”

“How is the little girl we found? What’s her name?

Sophia looked down. “I don’t know what her name is.

“Did you know check the fingerprint database?”

“She hasn’t told me. I didn’t want to find out her name that way. I want her to trust me enough to tell me her name. I’m not going to push her, though. I’m sure she will talk when she is ready. Thank you Jake, for letting her stay with us. My girls have kind of gotten attached to her.”

Jake smiled. “You are very welcome, Soph. How is she coping with everything?”

“Oh as good as can be expected. Sometimes she wakes up screaming, but she won’t tell me what she is dreaming. She just cries until she falls asleep again. I feel so bad for her. Who knows what happened to her while she was there.”

Jake nods. “What did the doctor say when she examined her?”

“She said that she is in pretty good health, a little dehydrated. They put an IV in her and let me take her home a couple of hours later. I have my oldest daughter Samantha staying home to keep an eye on her while I’m at work. Which reminds me, I need to call and check up on them. I have been calling her Rayne till she tells me what her real name is. I had to call her something, and faith seems to like that one for her. I tried a few other names, but she seemed to respond to that one the best.”

Sophia took out her cell and dialed her home number. “Hey, it’s me. How is Rayne doing?” She nodded a few times. “Okay, good I’ll be home as soon as I can tonight okay? Are you sure you and Rayne are doing okay?” She nodded a few more times. “All right, thank you so much sweetie for all you do. I’ll talk to you later. I love you! Bye.”

“How are they doing, Soph?”

“Rayne has been sleeping most of the day. She is still having the dreams. I just wish I was there for her more.”

“I know you do, which is why you are going home. We need to get all the information we can from her, and you are the only one who can. At least we need to get her name.”

“Are you sure, Jake?”

He smiled and nodded. “Yes. Now get going. I’m going to stop by Jax’s place and see if her or Sarah have any more information, and see how they are doing. We will meet back up later, okay?”

Sophia jumped up, grabbed her coat, and rushed out the door. She got to her apartment and rushed in.

She got home just in time to hear Rayne wake up screaming. She hurried into her room, wrapped her arms around her, and held her tight, whispering in her ear that no one will ever hurt her again.

Sophia started to cry. “I wish I could make everything better for you, sweetie. I wish you would talk to me. At least tell me your name?”

A few moments later, she heard a soft voice. “She like the name Rayne, mom.”

Sophia looked up to see her youngest daughter standing in the room.

“How do you know, Sweetie?”

She walked over to them and softly said. “She told me. We talk all the time.”

Sophia smiled. “What else has she told you, sweetie?”

Faith got up on the couch with them. “Well, she said that she doesn’t have a name, and that she is really glad you found her and gave her a name. She is sorry she wakes up screaming. She is just so scared. She also said that she loves you because no one has been so nice to her.”

Sophia took her daughter’s hands in hers. “Do you think you could do something for me, sweetie?”

“Sure, mommy. What do you need me to do?”

Sophia whispered into her ear then looked at her. Faith smiled and nodded her head. Faith took Rayne’s hand and gently. Faith whispered into Rayne’s ear, and then Rayne whispered back to Faith. Faith smiled up at her mom.

“Rayne said that she will tell you all she knows as long as I stay with her and hold her hand.”

“That is fine sweetie, you can stay.” Sophia turned her attention to Rayne and smiled. “Go ahead love, take your time.”

Rayne took a deep breath and squeezed Faith’s hand. “My mom, she was what I keep dreaming about. She was there with me in that place. She had me there. My mom was the first one taken and made to stay there. She was the boss’s first woman.”

Sophia spoke up. “So, do you know what happened to your mom?”

Rayne nodded and continued telling her story. “A woman, who I don’t know her name, told me later when I got to meet her, what really happened to my mom. She told me that when my mom was first there that she was the boss’s favorite. She got pregnant by him when she first got there. He was not happy so she tried to hide it from him for as long as she could, but eventually he started to notice that her belly was getting bigger. Needless to say, he wasn’t happy about it at all. In fact he was so mad that he locked her up in a room and didn’t let her out till my birth.”

As Rayne continued telling her story, Sophia texted Jake the information as she got it.

“As time passed, and it got closer to when she would give birth, the boss got more and more mad and it eventually turned into hate. Then as the hate grew within him, he grew to despise all that she was and stood for. So when the day came and my mother gave birth to me, and all was said and done, he kept me and my mother in that same room until he decided what to do with us both. We were made to stay in that room for years, barely having enough to eat and drink. He finally came into the room one day, grabbed her by the hair, and pulled her out of the room. I tried to hold on to her, but he pushed me down and left the room with my mother.”

Rayne wiped her eyes with the tissue Sophia gave her and then kept telling the story. “That was the last time I saw my mother. She never named me, she just called me her tiny Angel. Eventually he allowed Sarah to check in on me once and a while, but that was a long time after he took my mother. Then you came and rescued me. I feel so safe with you. I love you all.”

The tears flowed as she wrapped her arms around Sophia and hugged her tight.
