Sunday came without much excitement as Megan got ready for church like normal.
Jake came into their bedroom. “You getting ready for church Megan?”
“Yeah I am. I really wish you would come though.”
Jake took Megan into his arms. “I know you do, but I have a mountain of paperwork to get done at the office, so I think I’ll go there for a few hours. And you know I’m not into the whole religion thing anyway.”
Megan sighed softly. “All right, Jake, I’ll see you when you get home. Remember my parents are coming over for lunch today. They will be over around 2p.m., okay?”
Jake smiled and hugged his wife. “I’ll be there, I promise.” Then kissed her neck.
“Oh, before I forget, Jake, I’m meeting with the Bishop today after church, so if I’m not home when you get home, that is why.”
Jake nodded, then kissed his wife and headed for the office to work on the mountain of paperwork. Megan got into her car and headed off to church.
Throughout the service she kept thinking about her husband and what he was going through.
Megan went and sat by the Bishop’s door after the meetings were done. A short time later, the door to the office opened and the Bishop stepped out.
“Hello, Megan, how is your day going?”
“Oh, pretty good, Bishop. Thanks for asking.”
“Come on in and we can talk.” The Bishop motioned at a chair and Megan took a seat. “So, Megan, what do you want to talk about?”
“It’s about Jake. He is having a bunch of dreams that are causing him to wake up in a bad sort. He says that it’s just stress, but I think there is more to it than that. I want to help him, but I’m not sure what to do, and he won’t tell me about his dreams. He says he will tell me when he’s ready. I trust him, but I just feel so helpless. Is there anything I can do besides wait?”
The Bishop sat back for a few moments before answering. “Ask him if he’ll talk to me. Maybe I can get him to open up a bit. What do you think?”
“I don’t think it would hurt anything, I’ll talk to Jake and see if he would meet with you. I’ll let you know as soon as I do.”
Megan smiled, shook the Bishop’s hand, and headed home to have a talk with her husband. How could she get him to meet the Bishop?
She walked into the door, put down her purse, checked the time, and noticed that the clock read just before one o’clock. Megan washed her hands and started preparing lunch for her family.
About twenty minutes later, Jake walked in and saw Megan at the stove starting dinner. He walked into the kitchen, wrapped his arms around her waist, and nestled his lips in the curve of her neck. Megan pressed into his embrace.
“Whacha cooking, love?”
“Well, I just put a roast in the oven, and now I’m just getting the potatoes ready. Just let me finish this and we can go sit on the couch.”
“All right. I’ll be waiting, so don’t take too long, my dear.” Jake went and sat down on the couch and turned on the TV.
A little while later, Megan came in and sat down next to him, placing her hand on his.
“Love, can we talk for a minute?”
“Of course we can, Meg. Just let me turn this game off. The 49ers are losing…again.” Jake took her hand and squeezed it gently. He clicked the television off. “What did you want to talk about?”
“Well, you remember when I told you that I was going to talk to the Bishop today after church?”
“Oh yeah, love. How did that go?”
“The conversation went well, and it’s our conversation that I want to talk you about.” Megan took a deep breath and began. “I told the Bishop how concerned about you I am and about the dreams you have been having. I know you said that you would tell me about them, and I believe you. I just feel so helpless when you wake up every morning in a cold sweat. So the Bishop thought that maybe it would help if you talked to him about your dreams. He is a great man Jake, and he has helped me many times and I trust him. And besides all that, he really wants to meet you. So what do you say?”
Jake thought on this for a few moments then looked at his wife and smiled. “You really think meeting with him will help me work through these dreams?”
She smiled back and nodded. “I really do.”
He squeezed her hand again. “I don’t know if I can, Megan. You know I don’t trust many people.”
“Please, Jake. I know it’s hard, but I also know that it can only help you. I trust the Bishop completely. He won’t betray you, I promise. Please just give it a chance.”
“Can I think about it for a little while?”
Megan sat up, took a hold of both of his hands, and looked at him in the eyes. “Of course you can, sweetheart. I’ll go finish up dinner and then we can talk more about it, okay?”
Jacob winked at her, and continued to think on her proposal.
As Megan was finishing up dinner, Kaleb came down and sat next to his dad.
“Whacha d-d-doin’, D-D-Dad?”
“I’m trying to make a hard decision.”
“Well Bubba, Mommy wants me to talk to a friend of hers, and I don’t know if I can.”
“How come, D-D-Daddy?”
“Well, I’m kind of scared to talk about what she wants me to.”
“You get scared?”
“Yeah I do.” Said Jacob.
“D-D-Do you remember what you told me to do when I get scared and I don’t know what to do, or I have a problem I can’t solve?”
Jacob smiled. “What did I tell you?”
“Well D-D-Dad, you told me to go find someone to talk to about it. Sounds like Mommy found you someone to talk to.”
Jake ruffled his hair. “How did you get so smart?”
“You taught me.” He hugged Jacob. “Can I watch cartoons?”
Jake turned the channel before returning to the kitchen.
He stood in the doorway to the kitchen and watched his wife continue to prepare dinner. He walked up to her and pinched her butt playfully. She smacked his hand, and then winked at him.
Jake looked into her eyes. “I know you are just trying to help me make sense of everything. I’ll go see him. Although I’m not sure how in-depth I’ll go into my dreams with him, so we will have to see. To tell you the truth, I have wanted to be able to talk to someone about this for a long time.” His wife gave him a quizzical look and he just smiled. “Anyone who has helped you as much as you say he has just might be able to help someone as stubborn and me. Set up the meeting, love.”
Megan got a huge smile on her face and set up the time for next Sunday after church.
