Chapter 3: The Trigger

“We keep the good ones.”

That’s what she said. Five simple words. Unexpected words. Words that struck some deep hidden part within my unconsciousness. I had no idea what she meant, all I knew is that I wanted to be one. A good one.

Over the past four years I have often found myself thinking about these words and the affect they had on me. I can only explain them as keys that unlocked a door within my mind that concealed the desperate yearning of a child I had once been. A child that yearned to be “good”. A child that had never been able to understand what being good meant, except to understand that whatever it was, I was not. No matter how hard I tried to learn what it meant to be “good”, I always failed.

The truth is though, that its a lie. It’s a lie that says a child is not “good enough”. And the truth is that it is not a failing of the child that makes the child “not good enough” but the failing of the parent or adult.
