Clarissa

I ruined everything!

I wrapped my small arms around Louis’ large body, sobbing.

“W-why was he being so mean? Louis, he’s probably like the rest of them. I should never have gotten my hopes up. He’s just going to spend his wishes right away and leave us.” I wailed into Louis’ shoulder.

Louis whined and nuzzled his head into my neck. I pulled back and patted his head gratefully. We have been through so much together. He was my best friend and loyal.

I shook my head as tears streamed down my face. It didn’t make sense to me. Why didn’t he believe me? He was in disbelief when I told him what I was. Does society not believe in magic anymore?

“Clarissa?”

I stopped crying at the call. I looked around and realized it was coming from outside the lamp.

It was Master.

Louis growled at the entrance. I understood his feelings. He was upset that he made me cry.

“Clarissa, can we talk? I need to understand what is happening.”

I sighed and reluctantly got up. It was time to confront him once again. I just hoped he didn’t yell at me again.

Louis growled, telling me he didn’t want me to leave. I smiled softly as I wiped away my tears. He was so protective of me.

“It’ll be okay Louis” I reassured.

I closed my eyes and transported myself out of the lamp. I opened my eyes again and I was back in his sleeping quarters. I quickly looked around in awe. His sleeping quarters was constructed differently than any of my old masters.

I found Master sitting on his bed with his head down. He was moving his fingers around, seeming nervous.

I decided to initiate the conversation.

“You called?” I whispered shyly.

I didn’t want to risk him yelling him at me again. He looked up at me and I saw regret in his blue eyes.

“I’m sorry Clarissa. I didn’t mean to be so harsh on you. I thought you were just some crazy woman who broke into my house. I have a lot on my plate right now. I just put all my frustration on you. For that, I am sorry for my attitude.” he said sincerely.

I looked at him shocked. None of my old masters ever apologized to me before. I didn’t know what was on his plate, but I understood he was apologizing for his behavior towards me.

“It’s okay,” I whispered.

He looked relieved after I spoke.

“Now can you please explain to me all of this?” he asked.

I smiled brightly.

“Of course, Master.”

“You can call me Nate.”

I frowned at him. That wasn’t very formal for his title.

“Well, I am a genie. My name is Clarissa, at your service. I lived in this lamp for hundreds of years. Whenever someone rubs the magic lamp, I appear and the person becomes my Master. Each master is granted four wishes. Once those wishes are completed, I return to my lamp and go to the next owner. Sometimes it takes years, even centuries for someone to find my lamp. It’s fascinating seeing human civilization gain advancements.” I concluded with my explanation.

Master Nate looked at me strangely. I can tell he was in his thoughts to process this.

“So I have four wishes? I can do whatever I want?” Nate asked.

“Well, no. There are some things I can’t do- I can’t force anyone to fall in love, I cannot bring people back to life, and I can’t kill anyone unless it’s necessary. Besides that, I can grant anything. You already used your first wish on your mother. That was very selfless of you, I might include. You now have three left.” I stated proudly.

“So my mum is cured, she doesn’t have cancer anymore?” Master Nate asked, hope in his voice.

I nodded my head.

Nate smiled and ran up to me to pull me into a tight hug. I was shocked. It has been a long time since I have made a connection like this.

It strangely felt warm and safe.

He pulled away and scratched the back of his neck nervously.

“Sorry. I got caught up in the moment,” he said sheepishly.

I just smiled at him. His eyes widened all of the sudden.

“Wouldn’t it be suspicious that my mum was magically cured? How will my dad react?” Master Nate asked.

I shook my head.

“Your mother’s sickness will be nonexistent. No one but you shall have any memory of your mother’s illness.”

Master Nate shook his head in disbelief as he ran a hand through his hair.

“Well, to be honest with you, I don’t know what else to wish for. Can I wait to use it?”

“Yes, as long as you own the lamp, you can use your wishes whenever you want.”

Master Nate looked at me thoughtfully.

“Alright, what about you? Are you going to be stuck in the lamp the whole time?“, he asked.

I shuffled my feet.

“Not exactly. My job is also to protect you. So no harm shall come to you. I also wanted to see your civilization. You have such advancements, it astounds me.” I said shyly.

Master Nate smirked at me.

“You mean technology? Well, I can always let you come to school with me and show you around the town. I can get you a room in my house instead of your lamp. Unless you’re uncomfortable with the idea.”

My jaw dropped open. No master has ever been this kind to me. I felt tears in my eyes. This was so exciting to me.

“Wait, don’t cry! Is it something I said?” Master Nate panicked. I shook my head immediately.

“It’s just...no one has shown me this much kindness in a long time. Thank you.”

Master Nate nodded his head and opened the door. Then he looked at my outfit.

“Um, is there anything else you can wear? You will stand out if you wear that.”

I looked at him confused.

“What do women wear these days?” I asked curiously.

“Not much...” Master Nate muttered. “Um...here, look at some of my mom’s magazines.”

He walked out and came back with paper. I looked at it in awe. This looks like a book almost.
I played with the pages with interest. I hear a chuckle and I look up to see him looking at me, amused.

“Have you never seen a magazine before?” he asked in amusement. I shook my head. I look through the paper and find some different outfits in shock.

“Master, some of these outfits are very...exposing,” I said in amazement. Years ago, adults would beat their children for the very idea of this attire.

“It’s the new trend now. Pick something you will be comfortable in” he suggests.

Trend? I just nodded and kept looking. I spotted an outfit and I immediately fell in love with it. Using my hand I reach into the magazine. I grabbed the clothes and pulled them out of the paper.

“Holy crap!” Master Nate shouted.

I don’t know what that means.

Ignoring his statement, I snapped my fingers and my clothes are replaced with the new ones.

I was wearing a flower patterned shirt with long pants on. The fabric was very nice. I was wearing shoes that gave me more height. I put my hair in a braid and tied it. I inspected my work. I actually liked this.

I looked up and I saw Master Nate examine me with a look I don’t understand.

“Is this okay?” I asked.

Master Nate shook his head and blinked.

“You look great. Come on, I need to introduce you to mom. I need an excuse for you to stay here.”

“Wait!” I shouted. “Can I put the lamp away, please?”

Master nodded so I placed the lamp on top of a closet area. I smiled.

“See you later Louis. I’ll come back to feed you soon,” I whispered.

I heard a purr, signaling he heard me.

Happily, I walked out the door with my new master.
