High School?

“This is so exciting!” I squealed and the carriage sped through the road. Nate laughed at my excitement as I eagerly looked through the window.

Today was my first day at of ‘high school’. I was nervous and excited. What lessons did the school teach? I learned to read and write on my own and grew a love for books. I had a personal shelf of scrolls in my lamp with history and stories. The idea of learning made me almost starting bouncing in my seat.

“Okay Clarissa,” Nate said and I gave him my undivided attention. “I know you’re new to this time era, but I need to tell you to lay low. Don’t put too much attention on yourself. It’s alright to make friends...Just be careful. I can show you your classes and we can eat lunch together, alright?” Nate asked with uncertainty.

I nodded my head obediently. I would be quiet. Or as Nate said- lay low.

Nate soon parked his contraption in a space and got out. He unrestrained my from the straps and helped me out of the carriage. I looked in front of the building in awe.

So this is ‘high school’. I furrow my eyebrows in confusion. I turn to Nate.

“I don’t understand. It’s not on clouds or in the sky. Isn’t that high school?” I asked in confusion.

Nate chuckled and shook his head.

“Sorry Clarissa, you haven’t been in that lamp long enough for that advancement. Come on, let’s get your schedule ready, I already got you registered.” Nate guides me into the school and I look around in shock. The halls were crowded with students. My eyes widen in shock at their attire. They wore multiple colors, their fabric different with leather, silk, or cotton. I looked at a girls hair and almost screamed. I tugged at Nate’s sleeve in shock.

“Is that girl’s hair pink?!” I squeal in shock and amazement. “What magic did she use? I didn’t know we could do such a thing...”

“Clarissa, calm down. People are staring!” Nate hissed. I turned and saw a few people give us strange expressions. I look at Nate guiltily. Nate’s expression softened as he continued. “I can tell you all about it later, but for now you need to stay calm.”

I held in a pout and nodded my head as Nate guided me into other quarters. A lady was working behind a desk.

“May I help you?“, a lady said in a bored tone.

How can she be bored here? It’s school!

“Yes, um my friend here is a new student,” Nate explained.

“What’s your name young lady?” the lady asked as she began pressing buttons on a board.

I looked at Nate and he nods his head. I turned to the lady again.

“Clarissa Jameston,” I said sweetly.

The woman’s eyes sparkled a bit. She gave me a smile.

“You seem like a sweet young lady, Ms. Jameston. Have a great first day.”

She handed me the papers and I thanked her with a beaming smile. We walked out of the room and back to the hallway. Nate was very quiet and I looked up at him.

He was way taller than me. I could barely make it to his shoulder. Nate was looking down at me in wonder. I squirmed under his state.

“What?” I said shyly and looked at the floor. Did I do something wrong again?

I felt fingers tilt my chin up to look at him.

“I’m just surprised. Mrs. Reynolds is usually a grumpy person. I don’t think anyone has seen her smile. Ever. You’re unique Clarissa.”

I smiled shyly and let out a small thanks. I heard a bell ring and I jumped, looking frantically around. What was that?!

Nate started to laugh out loud. I held in my glare. What’s so funny?

“That’s the bell. It signals when classes start or finish. Come on, let’s get you to your locker then to your classroom” Nate said once he calmed down.

He grabbed my hand and we traveled around the school. Once we got to our destination, I saw metal doors on the wall. I stared dumbly at the black circle with lines and numbers. What am I supposed to do with this?

Nate saw my expression and slowly explained to me that it was a locker to put my belongings. He slowly showed me how to operate it. It took me ten minutes to open the locker on my own.

Once that was done, he took me to English class.

“I don’t understand. We speak perfect English. Why take a class on it?” I asked curiously.

“Your guess is as good as mine. We’re in the same class, so I can help you transition to at least the next classroom.” Nate said as he looked down the hallway.

I nodded and we entered the classroom.

Once we enter, all of the students turned to look at us. Some of them are looking at me curiously and others are glaring at me. I tilted my head at them.

What did I do?

“Ah, you must be Ms. Jameston. I’m Ms. Winter. Welcome to AP Literature. And Mr. Greene, why are you late to my class?” Ms. Winter asked with a glare towards Nate.

“I was showing Clarissa around,” he explained.

The teacher nodded and told us to have a seat. There were two empty desks on the back and we both sat there.

Then the lecture started. I listened intently, grasping the information. This is entirely new to me. This is exciting. The rest of the students looked like they wanted to go to sleep. Why would they? Does Nate not enjoy this? I don’t see why he doesn’t.

The bell rang again and everyone ran out. Nate stayed to help me get to my science class. He stopped at the door to the classroom.

“You sure you’ll be alright? I know this is new to you and I don’t want you to get in trouble.” Nate said worriedly and I frowned at the stress in his expression.

“I’ll be fine, Nate. Promise.” I said reassuringly. I didn’t want him to worry about me if anything I should be worried about him. I felt myself get nervous at the thought of us separated. I couldn’t protect him if I was in a different room.

“Hey, hey, Clarissa what’s wrong?” Nate looked at me with concern. I took deep breathes to calm my anxiety.

“Nothing, just a bit nervous. I’m fine.” I said with a forced smile.

Nate nods and reluctantly left for his next class.

I took another deep breath before entering the classroom. I sat in an empty chair in the second row.

“Excuse me, can I sit here?”

I turned my head and faced a small petite girl. She had ginger curls that went past her shoulders. She had some paint on her face (Nate called it makeup) on her eyes and lips. She wore jeans and a cute light pink top. Her kind green eyes looked at me intently.

I smiled at her.

“Sure. I’m Clarissa.” I said politely, trying not to squack with my excitement.

I’m making my first friend!

“I’m Chloe. It’s nice to meet you. Everyone has been talking about the beautiful new girl. I have to say, they were correct.” Chloe stated with a wink.

I blushed. No one had really called me beautiful before.

“Thank you. I can say the same for you,” I said shyly.

She smiled and I returned it.

The teacher entered and started a lecture. We both turned our heads and listen.

Eventually, the class ended and I left in search of the gym. Chloe and I had the same class together, so we went together.

The gym teacher gives me clothes and we change in the ‘locker room’. I wore black shorts and a grey t-shirt with the school symbol, as well as the other girls.

Chloe led me out and took me to a part of the gym.

“Kayla! I want you to meet the new girl! She’s nice!” Chloe shouted with joy.

A girl looked up at us with an amused expression.

Kayla had long light brown hair to her waist and dark blue eyes. She was a little bit taller than me, but not by much. I guess all three of us are petite.

“Hi, I’m Kayla. Well, you probably figured it out with Chloe’s screaming,” Kayla said jokingly. I laughed.

“Hi, I’m Clarissa. It’s nice to meet you.”

A screeching noise was made by the teacher and I jolted in shock. Kayla and Chloe giggled at me.

“Don’t worry, it’s just the whistle. Come on, let’s line up.” Kayla said.

Together, we get in line. The teacher was inspecting us until she stopped at one girl with brown hair.

“Destiny, why aren’t you wearing your uniform correctly?” the gym teacher barked.

“Coach Henning, these uniforms are disgusting! I had to take matters into my own hands. It looks way better now.” Destiny declared.

I begged to differ from her statement.

Her shorts exposed too much skin, exposing part of her bottom. Her shirt looked like it was torn to shreds and then braided together. I wasn’t very impressed. However, I couldn’t judge her. I was still used to women being completely covered in clothing. This society has way too many cultural changes for me to catch up on.

“Into your own hands huh? How about getting detention and cleaning the gym with your own hands?” Coach Henning sneers.

“You can’t do that! It will ruin my prom queen reputation!” Destiny cried and glared.

“Well too bad Destiny. Now go to the locker room and change. Now!” Coach Henning whistles in her face and pointed to the locker room.

Destiny stormed into the locker room. I turned to Chloe and Kayla, who looked at the event in amusement.

“It happens all the time. She’s always whiney and grasping for attention. She’s even a leech to poor Nate.” Chloe said disgustedly.

Destiny leeches on Nate? How do you leech someone? I will have to ask about that later.

Destiny eventually returned in uniform and for the rest of class, we ran in an oval road called a track.

After about 30 minutes, we all got changed. Kayla and Chloe invited me to sit at their table for lunch and I accepted wholeheartedly.

This day has been going wonderfully. I couldn’t wait to tell Louis.
