I was so lost in my thoughts the next morning as I walked to school I didn’t hear Jeremy come up behind me.
“Good morning short cake.”
“AAAHHHH!” I jumped. “Jeremy make some noise when you come up on a person, I about had a heart attack.”
“I’m sorry, I thought you heard me running up behind you. But I’m definitely not sorry for scaring you that was priceless.” Jeremy started laughing.
“Yes, ha ha ha, soooo funny.” I rolled my eyes but smiled. I’m glad he and I could be friends, I didn’t have the heartache over him not being my mate.
“So listen, I wanted to talk to you about something. You know obviously I haven’t found my mate correct?” Jeremy asked. I nodded my answer. Now that I knew what it was like to have my mate, it made my heart hurt for those who haven’t found their other halves yet. Except for Sam, I thanked the goddess he hasn’t found his mate yet, I wouldn’t wish him on anyone.
“Well, I overheard Sam talking about how you had till the end of the summer to find your mate, and if you didn’t you would have to choose him.” Jeremy paused “What if there was someone else to choose?”
“Like who?” I asked.
“Like me.” I stopped in my tracks and looked at Jeremy, there was no way I heard that correctly.
“I know you could probably have the pick of pack but hear me out. We’ve been friends since we were pups, we know each other and understand each other. And I’m super smart not to brag, with a little training I could be stronger too.” Jeremy stopped, “To be honest I always had a little bit of a crush on you.”
I stared at him with my jaw dropped. All these years I had feelings for him and I thought I was just a kid to him, a buddy. And all these years he felt the same way.
“Why didn’t you ever say anything?” I asked him.
“Oh come on Annie, the Alpha’s daughter with a nerd like me? Yeah right. I always hoped that it would be you, but I never had my hopes up. You deserve someone spectacular, unique and wonderful like you are. What do I have to offer you? I’m smart yeah but so are you. I had hoped and prayed to the moon goddess that on your birthday our eyes would meet and the world would stop…. But that didn’t happen.” Jeremy shut his eyes. I reached out and squeezed his arm, I didn’t know what to say to him. I had hoped and prayed for the exact same thing. I was crushed when he wasn’t my mate.
“I know we aren’t destined to be together, but if you don’t find your mate please consider me Annie. I’ll try my hardest to be the best mate you could ever ask for, I’ll get stronger and smarter to be the best Alpha the pack could ask for. I would do anything for you.” He looked at me with eyes that begged for me to say yes.
What could I say to him? That I’ve secretly wanted this for years? I had been in love with him since we were pups? Had he asked me this Saturday night I would have marked him then, but that was before. Before I had found my mate. Just the thought of being with anyone besides Troy made me feel like I was dying inside, and that’s when I knew. I could never be with another, I would do whatever it takes to be with him. Would it be easier to be with Jeremy? Yes. He would treat me good and would make a great leader, but he’s not Troy.
I looked at Jeremy who still was pleading at me with his eyes, I tried to respond carefully. “I appreciate you for being willing to step in but I could never take you away from you mate. I couldn’t forgive myself, and what kind of Luna would I be? Stealing another’s mate? You haven’t been eighteen long, and who knows maybe she hasn’t turned eighteen yet. Don’t give up just yet, okay?” I gave him a hopeful smile.
“No one would blame you for picking me over Sam, Annie. I could never forgive myself if you ended up with him.” Jeremy said with disgust. “I’m going to come with you guys this summer, maybe I’ll find my mate. If neither of us find our mates by the end of summer then that will be the end of it, we can be together. If you want to be with me that is.” He looked like a rejected pup.
“Okay deal.” The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them.
Jeremy’s face lit up, “You won’t regret it short cake! We will make a good pair, I promise.”
We had reached school by this point and he took off up the stairs into the school. I stood at the bottom of the stairs trying to figure out what had just happened. I felt tingles go up the back of my neck.
“Should I be worried about a wolf sniffing around what’s mine little fish?” Troy whispered into my ear. I could hear the smile in his voice.
I turned to look at him, “Never, I’m yours no matter what lies ahead of us.”
