Chapter 34

His father cleared his throat and turned back to me, I wiped the tears from my eyes. I couldn’t imagine losing a child, I know my parents would be devastated if they lost me or David.

“Hopefully now you understand my hesitation on this whole mate thing. I’ve already lost one son, I will not lose another. It would kill his mother and me both to lose Troy.” He walked back to his desk and sat down. I sat there silently, I didn’t know what to say or think.

“Not to mention Troy is next in line for the throne, the only one in line for the throne. He will need a queen, and forgive me when I say this, but a wolf is not an ideal mate for a mer King for obvious reasons.”

“So what are you saying?” I asked. I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like his answer.

“I would like you to reject my son, I don’t know how it will affect the pull he has towards you but I do know it will help you keep your distance from him so that he can take his rightful place as King. And you will be free to find an Alpha mate that will please your father.”

“No.” I’m not sure if it was me or Nan that growled out that answer but I agreed.

“I beg your pardon?” The king looked shocked that I would disobey him.

“I will not reject your son.” I said. “I understand what is at stake here, there’s a lot at stake for both of us! But I will not reject him without even trying to find answers, without trying to find a way for this to work for us both. I love your son and I will fight for him. I will fight for us.”

I stood up and walked to the door, I stopped when I reached to the door. “I know you don’t want to lose Troy, and I would never take him away from you. But have you ever thought what tearing us apart might do to him? Do to me? I can’t speak for him but I know that it would kill me to not have him in my life. I don’t want to lose him either.” With that I stepped out the door and shut it behind me. Troy and I needed to find answers, and find them quick.

Troy insisted on driving me even though I could have easily shifted and ran home. But having him drive me home meant more uninterrupted time with me so who am I to argue. We pulled up in front of my house and he shut off the truck. My parents were at an Alpha meeting so I knew they would be gone till late tonight.

“Do I want to know what my father said to you?” Troy turned in his seat and asked me.

“Probably not.” I said honestly. “He told me about Andrew. I’m so sorry Troy, I can’t imagine how that felt losing a brother.”

“It wasn’t easy. My mom was a wreck, that’s why we moved here. She couldn’t bare to be in the same house that he grew up in and no longer was in. So we packed up and moved here.” Troy explained. “It was rough and I would never want to go thru something like that ever again. But one good thing did come out of it.”

“What was that?” I questioned him.

“I found you.” He pulled me into his lap and started kissing me. Like really kissing me, I’ve never felt anything like this before. My mind was on a whole other cosmic pleasurable level that I missed the growl and truck door being yanked open. Next thing I know Troy is being yanked out of the truck and I was now on the ground instead of his lap.

“Get your hands off her!” Jeremy had Troy on the ground and had his fist pulled back ready to punch him.

I felt Nan take control and I shifted, I growled and jumped at Jeremy knocking him off of Troy. I stood in front of Troy, protecting my mate from Jeremy.

“Annie what are you-“ Jeremy started to say, then understanding dawned on him. “Holy crap. He’s your mate.” He stood up and took a step towards us, I growled at him making him back up.

“Little fish, it’s okay. I don’t think he’s going to hurt me now.” Troy rubbed my back. I looked over at Jeremy and he was right, Jeremy looked like he had been punched in the gut.

He deserves to be punched in the gut and more after what he tried to do to our mate.” Nan was still furious with him. I can’t say that I disagreed.

I whined at Troy to get his attention and motioned to the house letting him know I was going to go get clothes since I had ripped mine when I shifted.

“Go ahead, we will be alright.” Troy said.

Nan growled at Jeremy as we walked by just to remind him to not hurt our mate while we were inside. Once I was inside I quickly shifted, changed into some clothes and walked back outside. I know Troy could handle himself in a fight but I didn’t like the idea of him fighting with a wolf. Thankfully it was Jeremy who caught us and not Sam, then there would have been some bloodshed.

“What is he Annie?” I was taken off guard by Jeremy’s question.

I looked at Troy with wide eyes and then back at Jeremy. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. What is he? He’s human but I can smell something else. It’s faint and you wouldn’t catch it unless you were paying close attention.” Jeremy took a step towards Troy and sniffed. “Yep, you definitely aren’t human. Which is probably why Annie has been hiding the fact from everyone that she’s found her mate, she must be ashamed of you.”

I felt Nan start to take over again, I was going to rip Jeremy to shreds. Troy’s hand on my shoulder is what stopped me.

Stupid mate bond ruining my fun.” Nan sat and pouted.

“I would strongly suggest that you use a different tone when you are speaking to my mate, I will not hold her back from ripping you into pieces next time.” Troy said calmly. It’s a good thing one of us can keep control.
