“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.” – Anonymous

Today is one of those days where it’s just blissful to be alive and the world is filled with joy and orgasms and dolphins, in no particular order. It’s a day that gives me the sweet taste of freedom and liberation, if only for a short time.

It started out innocuously enough. It was Sunday morning and Simon and I were sitting in the kitchen, shooting the shit, with the whole day splayed out in front of us and absolutely no plans.

We were listening to a local community-college radio station that plays psychedelic, New Age music on Sunday mornings. As one of the songs ended, the DJ announced that she was giving away free tickets for a dolphin cruise to the tenth caller. I leapt for the phone and speedily dialed the number, like I was a meth addict trying to reach my dealer. “Sorry, you’re caller #2.” Damn. Redial. “Sorry, you’re caller #5.” Damn. Redial. “Congratulations, you’re caller #10.” Bingo!

And, just like that, Simon and I were on our way to the Dana Point harbor. The only catch was that we had to be there in about 10 minutes to catch the cruise. Luckily, we only live about five minutes away, so we ran over to the drugstore first to get some anti-seasickness wristbands.

We got to the harbor and we were off. And, oh what a glorious trip it turned out to be. The sun was shining. There was a violinist on board who played “dolphin-enticing” music. He was so good that we had schools of dolphins swimming and playing alongside the boat in no time. It was heavenly.

To be in the company of dolphins is quite a privilege. They are so present and so happy to just be, that you can’t help but be affected by them. Even Simon, who was quite seasick by now, despite the wristbands, was smitten.

When we got home, even though we were both a little queasy, we made love, which was the cherry on top of this ice cream sundae of a day. Magical, romantic, transcendental.
