The euphoria engendered by the drumming circle is short-lived, however. Today, I’m struggling with getting my unemployment funds back. I reported to the Employment Development Department that I started doing some freelance writing and they chivalrously proceed to reciprocate by freezing my account – without even letting me know. It was only after I tried using my card and there was no money on it that I finally called to investigate what was going on. Trying to reach a live person took almost a week. Then, when I finally got a human, after being on hold for an hour, this is what she told me: Because I used the word “freelancer,” it froze everything up until they could talk to me and have me fill out yet another form.

Then they send me a letter informing me of a phone interview a few weeks out to discuss my “freelance status,” long after next month’s rent is due. No can do.

So, after trying a gazillion times again to get through to an actual person, someone picked up the phone and went above and beyond to help me right then and there, instead of making me wait for the phone interview. I thanked her profusely and did a happy dance after hanging up the phone. That will make paying the rent a little bit easier.
