“If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, ‘Thank you,’ that would suffice.” – Meister Eckhart

Last year on Thanksgiving, Simon and I went to a church in Laguna Beach that provided a free Thanksgiving lunch. There was an abundance of food and it was a gorgeous day, so we were able to sit outside in the courtyard. We were both thankful for the opportunity to have a nice meal and give thanks with our neighbors up the road.

This year, Simon not only wants to take advantage of our new turkey fryer, he also wants to try various methods of basting. So, he shops around at various grocery stores and finds four turkeys that have been discounted down to almost nothing – two fresh and two frozen.

Over the period of the next two weeks or so, our apartment has the perpetual smell of turkey and brine. Simon cooks turkey after turkey, comparing and contrasting – some he brines for a few hours, some he brines overnight. He even made a spreadsheet to record the various methods to refer to next year, bless his heart. I have never seen so much turkey. And, we are knee deep in stuffing, as we make a separate batch to accompany each turkey. The results are mixed, as some of the turkeys are plump and juicy, while others are drier. But the turkey fryer is a huge success once again, Simon proclaims triumphantly, as we unanimously agree that it produced the best results.

But, as the weeks go on, and we are still knee-deep in turkey, we finally reach that saturation point when you never want to see another turkey again. While they are still selling fresh and frozen turkeys in advance of Christmas, Simon and I intentionally walk the other way whenever we go to the grocery store. We have had our fill. We are turkey-rich and fully satiated.
