The kicker? I’ve been at my uncle’s house for a few days now and need to do my taxes.

Lo and behold, two huge surprises are waiting for me. First, I neglected to check the little box on the unemployment forms for the past year – the one that asked if I wanted the federal tax taken out now. Since I did not check that box, I owe the IRS about $1,000.

And, surprise #2? When Simon first started working, I agreed to let his boss make his checks out directly to me, so I could cash them for Simon, to make it easier for him, with him not having a bank account and all. I thought I was doing the chivalrous thing. My reward? For the first time in my life, I owe taxes on work I didn’t even do. Unbelievable! I didn’t even think Simon would make that much while I was cashing his checks that I would ever owe taxes on it. But live and learn, baby, live and learn.

After the initial shock on both of these financial issues, I reflect, and realize this is part and parcel of my financial healing. I need to get my financial house in order and the Universe is not wasting any time in giving me opportunities to do so. I’ve learned so much in the past year – reading books and via the financial prosperity class – about what I need to do to be more financially responsible. I just want to get a handle on this debt once and for all. It’s time.

So, I am trying to look at these surprises through the lens of gratitude and give thanks. I finish reading The Prosperous Heart. And, I know deep down inside, in my very core, that Simon and I made the right decision. I am curious to see what unfolds next…
