Luna sat in her corner, waiting for her turn to leave. She never once looked up at the men, keeping her gaze on her hands in her lap, trying to keep herself as invisible as possible. It paid to go unnoticed around here.
The girl went over her routine in her mind again and again, making sure she remembered all of it, every trick, every pose... There was so much to try to remember, she was sure she would forget something yet again, leading to another punishment.
When it was finally her turn, Luna got to her feet and shuffled to the door, head down. Her escort was one of the guards that always watched her, and she shied away when he got close. The man’s eyes on her sent a chill down her spine.
It only took a few minutes before she was in her enclosure. Once inside, the guards couldn’t touch her, so she always tried to get there as soon as she could. Passing beneath the arch of the door, she felt the familiar, uncomfortable sensation of a forced shift, and she was her otter Other. She slipped smoothly into the cool water, embracing the feeling of weightlessness that accompanied it.
She so dearly wished that she wasn’t alone. Looking over at the other exhibits, she saw her fellow animals entering their enclosures, some with company, like Richard now had. Loneliness threatened to overtake her yet again, but she shook her head and began to work on her routine again and again, perfecting her tricks.
She would not be punished today. That was her goal.
