Pain;highly unpleasant physical sensation caused by illness or injury
It was lunch time now and the students of Black Wells would usually eat outside but it had been raining cats and dogs so everyone was stuck inside the cafeteria. Walking down the halls, my mind was a jumbled mess.
I desperately wanted to talk to Tate but I didn’t know what to say. Do I thank him again? Do I ask him why he didn’t tell me that he was going to start school here? Maybe because he didn’t want to tell a total stranger his business.
I sighed internally.
Would he even recognize me? Judging from the intense stares he had been giving me in AP English this morning, I’m pretty sure he recognized me.
I made it to my locker and opened it, placing my books there. I flinched suddenly when an arm was slung around my shoulders. The bite mark from Adam earlier, stinging.
“Hey Sky,” Milan’s blue eyes sparkled before a frown overtook her features, “What’s wrong?”
I immediately flash her my bright smile, “You just startled me, that’s all.”
Milan bought my lie and giggled an apology.
My close friend began talking animatedly about something that happened during the weekend.
“After watching a movie, Khaleb took me to this fancy restaurant and they had the best seafood ever! I swear! You and Adam should go there for your two year anniversary.”
I felt the tears swelling in my eyes, I really couldn’t believe that two years had passed. It made me wonder if I would ever get out of this. Would I really be forced to marry this abusive man? Would I be forced to have children with him? Just the thought of never getting out of this horror show of a relationship made me want to cry.
I internally promised myself that I wouldn’t let it come to that, I won’t marry that terrible man, I won’t have his children. I’ll kill myself before I let that happened.
I felt myself crash into a person and before I knew it, I was flying to the ground but before I reached the ground, a hand grasped my wrist and with gentle force, pulled me into a warm, hard chest.
It happened so fast that the breathe was literally taken out of me.
After gathering my thoughts, I looked up and was instantly frozen in my place. His steel grey eyes burned into my eyes, his hand was wrapped around my waist and I couldn’t help but wince as the fingernail marks that Adam left on my skin burned.
My wince apparently didn’t go unnoticed by Tate as he let go of me completely. Confusion swarmed his eyes as he stared down at me.
I instantly felt nervous as anger filled me. I was angry at myself for bumping into him, I should have been watching where I was going and maybe this wouldn’t have happened.
Tate’s pink tongue suddenly swept out of his mouth to lick his bottom lip and it was then I noticed the little silver band on it. The man had a freaking tongue piercing and dare I say it actually made him even more attractive.
“Watch where you’re going.” Was all he said before he walked around me and continued walking.
I stood there in utter disbelief. What was I hoping for?
His tone was cold and he sounded detached. I turned around quickly and saw his lean frame turn the corner.
“What an insensitive prick.” Milan scoffed, “He was clearly the one who bumped into you.”
I glanced at Milan and saw that she was watching the direction that Tate just went in. She shook her head and grabbed my hand, pulling me to the cafeteria.
The first thing that met my ears was the loud chatter in the cafeteria. There were tables scattered around the large hall and there were people laughing.
Milan pulled my hand as we walked straight, heading to the table in the middle of the hall. Seated at the table were a couple of cheerleaders and jocks, along with Khaleb but my body tensed when I saw Adam seated there also.
Milan let go of my hand and went towards Khaleb, leaving me with Adam who was preoccupied talking to one of the lacrosse players, Chester Michael.
I stood for a bit too long because before I knew it, Adam had sent me a fierce glare when Chester turned.
I clasped my hands in front of me and tentatively walked towards Adam, sitting in the seat beside him. Acting like a good boyfriend, Adam pulled me in for a kiss causing Chester and everybody else at the table to groan.
Adam pulled away with a dazzling smile, his arm snaking around my waist. My stomach grumbled quietly, demanding food. Adam heard and sent me a quick glare forcing me to put my head down. According to him, it was embarrassing to have a girlfriend who ate like a pig, so I was never allowed to get my lunch, I always had to eat little bit from Adam’s plate.
Pushing his tray towards me, Adam gestured for me to eat it. Hesitantly, I pick up the sandwich and began taking small bites. He may not show it much but Adam did sometimes show his good side, it was rare but he did care sometimes.
His lips were suddenly by my ear, “Stop behaving like that.” His voice was quiet and he said it in a growl.
Swallowing, I respond with a meek, “How?”
“Stop acting so fucking shy.”
My heart ached as I straightened my spine, is this really what my life had come too?
I smile and nod before continuing to take a few bites of the sandwich. Mid bite, I hear the sound of the cafeteria’s doors being opened and a squeal. Curiously, I looked up and standing there in all his handsome glory was Tate. He looked around the hall as if looking for someone; his attention was then caught by a couple of girls who had been trying to catch his gaze by puffing out their chests. I almost laughed out loud when he glanced at them for a second before looking away uninterested.
Unfortunately. he hadn’t seen me and I was a bit saddened when he began walking towards the edge of the cafeteria where all of the ‘bad’ kids hung out. Tate sat in between two guys, his back turned to me and I couldn’t stop the frown that formed on my face.
Sadly, my frown didn’t go unnoticed by Milan who questioned me which gained the attention of everyone at the table.
I wave her off as Adam’s fingers dug into my sides, “Nothing’s wrong, I just am a bit upset that...my sandwich is almost finished.”
Milan smiled, “Oh, that’s fine you can have mine. I already ate earlier so I’m still super full,” I watched in concealed horror as my best friend proceeded to pick up the sandwich from her tray and hand it to me.
I chuckle nervously, “Thank you.”
The painful squeeze to my sides told me that Adam would deal with me later.
“How dare you act like such a fucking pig in front of all my friends?!” Adam bellowed, as he paced his large bedroom. I sat on the edge of his bed with my palms in my lap and my head bowed. “Do you know embarrassing that was?”
My eyes swelled with tears, “I’m sorry,” I whisper out, my voice soft as my bottom lip quivered.
He stopped in front of me and gripped my chin tightly, forcing me to look up into his blazing eyes. His face was red with anger as he stated his next words, “You’re about to be fucking sorry, bitch.”
A scream was ripped from my throat when he grabbed me by my hair and threw me to the ground. Pain erupted in my head as my scalp burned, I was pretty sure he pulled a few strands of my hair out but I had no time to worry about my hair when a second later my top was torn off.
“No, no, no,” I cried out, already knowing what was next, “Please don’t! I’m sorry! I won’t do it again!”
“Shut up!” Adam shouted, punching me in the face. I bit the inside of my cheek to keep the scream from coming out.
I sobbed quietly as Adam slid his belt from around his waist and folded it before holding it above his head. Then he brought it down onto my skin before repeating the process over and over and over again. All the while I bit down on my lip and tried not to focus on the blistering pain. I closed my eyes and welcomed the darkness that greeted me.
