9. His Reason

“Honey,” Kelechi said once I was done with my prayer, “I’m not a ghost so don’t be scared.” He tapped the bed. “Come here.”

I shook my head. “How can I be sure of that?”

“How else can you explain that you were able to feel me on Saturday?”

I looked at him closer and surely neither did he look sick nor pale. I shook my head. It can’t be: Kelechi is really alive!

I stepped towards the bed and sat on it. I raised my hands to hold his face. My eyes stared at his which shone with delight. Then he gave smile he always did at times he said he loved me.

I put my arms around him. “You’re alive!”

He chuckled and hugged me back. “Yes, I am.”

I released the hug. “But how’s that possible? Florence said –”

“Honey,” he said looking like a young boy who was caught doing something bad before holding my chin, “I’m sorry you had to go through such emotional pain.”

I brought his hand down. “Brownie, just explain how you’re alive.”

He sighed. “For starters, I purposely fell.”

My eyes went wide. “What? Why did you?”

“I have a plan which required me to do so.”

I quizzically stared at him. “You had a plan?”

“Not had – have. But I’m fine now.” He took a lock of my braided hair in his hand. “Don’t be worried about my health, okay?”

Excuse me! Did he just say I shouldn’t worry about his health?

In a matter of seconds, I raised my hand and gave him a slap so loud you could hear it a kilometre away from us. His head turned sharply to his right, and he raised his hand to his cheek.

I stood. “What sort of stupid plan,” I shouted, “did you have that made you to risk your life? Do you have a clue to the kind of misery I passed through since Saturday? When did you become selfish? Eh, Kelechi?”

It made sense now: why that morning, before I went back to sleep, happened like that. He knew his plan may fall through, so he needed to hear me say I love him probably for the last time in his life.

He brought down his hand and looked at me. I could tell simply by staring into his eyes he was sorry to have done what he did. “I deserve the slap and you getting mad at me. But, I also have my reasons. Like I told you that morning, it’s for ours and our children’s benefit in the future. I will never intentionally hurt you and the kids.”

I raised my hand to his face. “Oh, please! Spare me that rubbish!” I turned away from him and walked towards the door.

Just as I touched the knob, he said, “Fisayo, I’m really sorry I hurt you like this. Please, don’t leave me.”

I turned around and glared at him. “You should’ve thought of that before letting your family believe I’m responsible for your so-called death.”

His eyes were now the size of a baby’s behind. “They know?”

I raised my hands up, being frustrated with his idiotic question. “Of course, they know! Ebuka was with me when Florence told us you were supposedly dead. He told them and now they all are at our home.”

I frowned and continued. “It’s a good thing my mum has Taiwo and Kehinde with her, otherwise I have no clue to what violent words they would hear when your family starts their trouble.”

He smiled. “It seems my plan is taking place faster than I imagined it would.”

“What stupid plan are you talking about?” He had been saying he had a plan – or has according to him. It was this same moronic plan that almost took his life. So, I had to know what it was all about.

He tapped the space on the bed I previously sat on. “Come here so I can tell you.”

I folded my arms on my chest. There was still a scowl on my face as I told him, “I’m okay where I am. Thank you.”

“Come on, honey,” he whined. “I already said I’m sorry. It won’t happen again; I promise.”

I maintained my position. There was nothing he could say or do that would make me to leave where I stood. I wanted to let him know how mad I was at him. He almost lost his life for goodness sake! I was going to forgive him for what he did but definitely not now.

“Please, Fisayo,” he said with a low voice. He looked at me with those eyes: the type which always turned off my anger and turned on my hormones. He was trying to seduce me. I knew better not to let him have his way.

“Honey, I really want to tell you why I did what I did.” He pouted at me and stared at me with two emotions clearly written in his eyes: lust and regret.

The lustful part knotted my stomach. It’d been sort of a long time he looked at me that way. I wanted to run to him and devour his lips howbeit I still wanted to be mad at him for what he did.

Then the regret part reminded me he would never do anything without having a tangible reason attached to it.

I rolled my eyes at his behaviour. “Oh, whatever!” I stepped forward, causing him to give me his signature boyish grin.

I took my former position on the bed and pointed at his face. “It better be for a good reason.”

He took my hand, in front of his face, in his. “After the detective told me his findings, I came up with an idea of teaching my family, especially my siblings, a lesson. This is because after Ebuka and Nkechi decided to drop out out of the university, they refused to get engaged in anything, believing that they could depend on me. So, I want to show them I won’t let that happen.”

I furrowed my brows. “So you decided to put your life in danger, isn’t it?”

He slowly nodded with the guilt written on his face. “I did that so I could get a definite reason as they already believe you’re controlling me.

“Because I know they don’t like you, if they’d maltreat you and I show myself, I’d tell them I don’t want have anything to do with them. Until they respect you as their family and the fact that I won’t always be there for them, then we can all be a family again.

“I had actually come up with this idea a long time ago, but I decided to carry it out on Saturday because Ebuka was around. It wasn’t exactly how I thought it’d be but it was better than I anticipated based on what Florence told me the drama Ebuka put up here.”

Everything he said made sense. He was actually thinking about me throughout his planning. Perhaps I shouldn’t have slapped him.

Oh whatever! He did say he deserved it. I mean, he almost died because he was trying to make me happy and comfortable.

I analyzed his last words, which made me realize Florence probably knew what was going on with him. She was his doctor so she could have told me he wasn’t dead earlier or brought me to meet him earlier. “Is Florence in on this – because she would have told me what happened on Sunday after church service?”

The guilty demeanour he had got worse as he nodded. “I asked her not to tell you. She didn’t support me at first. However, after I explained to her, she reluctantly agreed.”

“So when are you going to show yourself?” I said, shifting closer to him.

“Well, you did say they are at our home, right? I’ll need you to do me a favour.”

“What favour is that?”

“I know you would want to stand up for yourself when they say or do hurtful things to you but don’t. I’d use it as leverage against them.”

Okay, I know he didn’t just ask me to be a coward. I had been doing that in last few years and I knew I wasn’t going to do that anymore, especially now that he was whole and hearty. “Brownie… I – I don’t know… I can’t just let them hurt me, especially now that I know you’re not dead.”

He held my chin. “Please, honey. I’m actually doing this because of you. I want them to leave you alone once and for all.” Those brown eyes of his begged me. He didn’t even needed to have said his earlier words because I could read in his eyes he desperately wanted me to help him out with his plot.

I sighed and shrugged. “Okay. I’ll try.”

He narrowed his eyes and furrowed his brows. “Try? Honey, I need you to do it not try to do it.”

I frowned at him. “You should be grateful I said I would try.”

He bowed his head and sighed. “Okay.” He looked at me again. “At least it would be fair for letting you pass through all that grief.”

I nodded.

Then, wondering when I was going to have my man back with me, I said, “You haven’t told me when you’d show yourself.”

He shrugged. “I don’t know myself.”

I gestured to the building. “Well, you’re not going to stay in the hospital forever.”

“I know.” He lightly tilted his head to the side. “Can you explain everything to your mum so I could stay at her place for the meantime? I’m supposed to be discharged tomorrow.”

I nodded. “I will.” I softly pinched his cheek and smiled. “At least you’d get to stay with our babies. They’ve been asking of you since Saturday.”

He laughed softly. “They miss their daddy, don’t they?”

I nodded. “Yes.” I leaned forward. “Just like I miss you too,” I whispered.

He too leaned forward and slowly set his lips on mine. I expected them to be rough and they were – slightly. He moved his lips against mine, making me sigh in his mouth and close my eyes.

I moved my lips against his too, and before I knew it, he slipped his tongue into my mouth. I raised my hand to hold his face while his fingers stroked my waist.

One of his hands found its way under my blouse. He caressed my skin and his other hand stroked my arm. My toes tickled at way he massaged me. The grass which was in my insides, when he flirtatiously asked me to sit beside him so he could explain his reason, now was a forest because of how he handled me as if he never wanted me away from his body.

I didn’t want him to stop. In fact, I wanted us to make love right away. Unfortunately, he discontinued what he was doing to me.

I opened my eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered not a moment after.

My brows were creased. “Sorry for what?”

“For risking my life. I really –”

I placed my index finger against his lips. “Shh. Even though you should have talked to me about it so we’d look for a better option, you already explained yourself and I understand. I’m still mad at you though, and you need to be punished for being suicidal.”

“Exactly how are you going to punish me, honey?”

I blushed and looked away. “Perhaps you’d know when you get to my mum’s place.”

When I glanced back at his face, he looked so smug that I knew he understood what I really meant by my last statement.

“Hmm…” he said. “I can’t wait for the punishment then.”

He pulled me closer to him, pinned his lips on mine and drove me into another world with his touch.
