1. Hanson

I pass my friend Daniel a water bottle as I gulp mine down and wipe the sweat off my brows. As much as I love the physical activity, I feel exhausted from the coach pushing us too hard. We’re submissives. We can’t take the strain as well as dominant wolves can.

My friend, Daniel, is an Omega, and I’m a special type of submissive wolf that is similar to an Omega called Psi. Psi wolves are so rare that most wolves have never even heard of them. I would’ve been classified as an Omega of it wasn’t for the fact that I can’t heal and that my goddess given gift is empathy.

My gift has its pros and cons. The pros being that I’m attuned to the wolves around me. The cons being that no one wants likes to feel like their mind is being read. So for the most part, wolves avoid me.

Soon, class is over. I wash up and head to my next class. I sit down in my seat as the smell of roses hits my nose. I look up and spot Aubrey entering the room. She’s an alpha ranked she-wolf. Like most alphas, she’s tall, but is more on the short side for an alpha with her height being 5′9. Her lithe body moves gracefully as she walks to her seat. Her brown hair is pulled up into a ponytail.

Since I’m 17, I know for a fact that she’s my mate. I can feel the mate bond acting so strongly when I’m around her. Unfortunately, I also know that she hates my guts. Aubrey is the former Alpha’s daughter and the current Alpha’s niece. The reason her father is no longer Alpha is because I exposed his heinous behaviors, and he was shunned by the pack and title stripped.

She blames me for that, and I can’t say I regret what I did. I know she loves him but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s a monster. Tomorrow is her 17th birthday. Hopefully, the mate bond will be enough to overcome her hatred of me. I look away from as the classroom begins to fill.

After school, I head to the pack house. As an orphan that wasn’t adopted before I turned 15, I have a permanent place here. I quickly head to my room and get changed, washing myself in my connected bathroom. I head to the kitchen and start making dinner.

“Smells good,” Alpha Derrick says behind me, causing me to jump. Alpha Derrick holds a strong resemblance to Aubrey with his brown hair and eyes. He stands on the other side of the counter so his large frame isn’t too towering. However, everybody towers me with my 5′2 height. My looks aren’t that impressive either. My hair is an ugly bright orange. The sides of my hair is shaved with the top being longer and curly. My skin is pale and with freckles littered all over my arms and face. My eyes are a dull gray. “Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you. What are you making?”

“It’s fine,” I tell him. “I’m making meatloaf and Shepard’s pie. Did you want to talk to me about something?”

“Yes, I’m thinking of making Aubrey my heir. I want your opinion.” He turns serious.

“She’s a risk,” I tell him honestly. “Given her history, but I think you’re a great Alpha and if there’s anyone who can guide her, it’ll be you.”

“I’ll take your word into consideration.”

“Thank you.” He nods his head and walks away. I return my attention to cooking.

I sit at the dining table with the Alpha, Luna, and their sons, Sam and Dean. I quickly eat and head back to my room. Alpha Derrick might feel comfortable around me, but the rest of doesn’t. I hate the feel of their discomfort brushing against my mind. I sit at my desk in my room and do my homework before going to bed.

I wake up the next day and get quickly get ready. I already hear the sounds of wolves within the pack house. I hear a knock on my door. I open it, revealing Daniel. His dark dreads hang loosely over his shoulder.

“Hey, Pup,” he greets me. “You ready?”

“I’m shorter than you, not younger,” I say, shoving him back and walking out of my room.

We gather in the main room of the pack house with the rest of the submissive. The Luna enter, and everyone falls silent. Her blond hair is styled in a wavy fashion. She splits us into four groups. The group I’m assigned to is in charge of food.

We head to the kitchen. I pair up with Daniel as I try to avoid being near the other submissives so they don’t feel uncomfortable. The pack house has multiple kitchens so we head to one that isn’t currently being occupied and start cooking.

It’s mid afternoon by the time we finish. I’m tired and hungry. I make us a quick snack before rejoining the other submissives. Our Luna returns.

“Thank you, for your hard work,” she says, smiling. “I couldn’t have done this with you. You’re welcome to stay for the party. Who knows, one of you might be my niece’s mate.”

I can say for a fact that none of them is Aubrey’s mate. I walk to my room with Daniel not far behind me.

“Are you really not going to go to the party,” he asks, looking at me like I’m crazy. “You don’t want to meet your mate when she can feel the mate bond? Why?”

“She hates me,” I tell him. I’ve kept the secret of her being my mate from everyone, even my best friend, but he knows me too well and quickly figured me out. He looks at me in shock. “If she finds out I’m her mate, I’m sure she’ll just reject me.”

Rejection can be dangerous for submissive wolves. The more submissive you are the deadly the rejection. With my submission being on par with with an Omega, her rejection would probably kill me.

“I’ll stay with you.”

“You don’t have to. I know how much you love parties. I’ll be fine in here. I have homework I want to get done anyways.”

“I want to, and a party doesn’t get good until it’s half way over.”

Banging on my door wakes me from my sleep. I check the time and see that it’s 10pm. I scrub my face with my hand before opening the door, revealing Aubrey. I stare at her in shock as sniffs the air.

“Mate,” she says as her eyes turn gold. She grips my arms and pulls me to her, lowering her nose to my neck. I shiver as sparks ignite on my skin where ever she touches me. I tilt my head to give her more access to my neck.

I feel nervous as she plants kisses along my neck. Her warring emotions doesn’t help calm me either. She raises her head from my neck and reaches to a decision. She enters my room, closing and locking the door behind her before pushing me onto my bed.

2. Hanson

I wake up feeling sore and achy. My body is littered with bite marks and scratches. I wince and touch my neck. She refused to mark me which solidified my decision not to go all the way with her. I’m more than sure that she’s going to rejection me.

If I’m going to die, I’m not going to let her have all of me just to throw it in my face. I feel the moment she wakes up. She sits up in my bed, pulling the sheets over her breasts and glares at me.

“Last night was a mistake,” she says. I don’t bother sitting up and stare at my ceiling.

“I didn’t drug you. You could’ve left at anytime, Aubrey,” I tell her.

“My wolf had taken over. You think I want you as my mate, Hanson? You’re too willful, too ugly, too short, and too everything I hate in a mate.” I sit up and narrow my eyes at her.

“That didn’t stop you last night. You begged for my touch. You scream my name over and o-.” My face jerks to the right and my vision goes white for moment as she slaps me in the face. I taste blood in my mouth. “I’m not stupid. I knew what you were planning, what you’re still planning so don’t use your wolf as a lame excuse.” She grabs the hair at the top of my head and pulls me to her face.

“You’re right, Hanson. I hate you. I hate you so fucking much for ruining everything. I, Aubrey, reject Hanson as my mate.”

Even though I was excepting them, my heart shatters at her words. My wolf howls within me and barely hold back a whimper.

“I accept your rejection,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper. I refuse to let her see me cry. “Put your clothes on and get out of my room.”

She throws me back. I don’t look at as she gathers her clothes and leaves. Once she’s gone, I lock the door and let out a gasping cry as tears fall down my face. I clutch my chest. I feel like I can’t breathe.

The sound of my door being broken somewhat wakes me up. I hear frantic voices and feel myself being picked up. I just want to be left alone to die in peace. Everything goes black.

I wake up again, this time in the hospital. The smell of roses fills my nose. Aubrey? I look around and spot Daniel sitting in chair next to my bed, resting his head on my bed and holding my hand. His light brown skin looks pale under bright hospital light.

I realize the scent of roses is coming from the blanket covering me. I hold it to my nose and take in the comforting scent of my mate, soothing the ache in my heart. My actions cause Daniel to stir. He looks relieved as stares at me and pulls me into a hug.

“Thank the goddess, that you’re alright,” he says. “I can’t believe that bitch rejected you.”

“The blanket,” I ask, my voice croaking from lack of use. He sits back.

“I took it from Aubrey.”

“How?” I can’t imagine her willfully helping me.

“I just walked in her room and took it. When she tried to stop me I told her that I would make her look like Freddy Krueger and reminded her that I healed the children that survived the house fire last week.” I smile at him.

Omegas are freaking scary. They’re all sweet and cuddly until you hurt someone they care about. Daniel is better at hiding his vicious side from the pack than the other two Omegas in our pack.

“Thank you.”

“You’re my best friend. This is the least I could do for you, and I don’t want you to die.” He says that with a smile, but I can feel the fear and truth behind his words.

“I’m going to be put on watch, aren’t I?”

“You better believe your ass you are.”

Alpha Derrick enters the room with a tray of food. He places it in front of me

“Eat,” he says before sitting down in a chair. I do as he says, sensing his worry. “Now tell me who rejected you.”

My first instinct is to protect Aubrey. She’s my mate, even if I’ve been rejected, but then I realize that my Alpha already knows and just to hear it from my lips.

“Aubrey,” I answer.

“You’ve been 17 for almost a full year now, Hanson. Why would you not say anything until now?”

“Because I knew this would happen and hoped it wouldn’t if she could feel the bond as strongly as I did.”

After a couple of days, I’m released from the pack hospital and I’m immediately kept busy. I always have someone with me. Daniel is always sure to stop by the pack house to make sure I eat even when I don’t have an appetite. I hate it but I appreciate it.

Saturday morning I walk out my room only to be slammed against the wall. I stare up at Aubrey, taking in her anger and rage.

“Listen, mutt,” she snarls at me. “I still hate you but I need to pretend that I’m trying to make it work so my uncle will announce me as his heir. I don’t want a weak, pathetic mate like you.”

“I’m weak because I’m a submissive,” I say as I shove her away from me. “What’s your excuse?”

Now, I’ve gone and made her even angrier. She growls as she reaches for me. I dodge her hands, but she still manages to grab my shirt. She pulls me to her and grabs my hair before slamming my head against the wall. She does this three time, causing my vision to go dark briefly.

“Shut your fucking mouth. I am far from weak. If you know what’s best for you, you won’t say word to the Alpha.” She presses her dominance against me. I whimper but refuse to submit to her. She growls at me.

“What do I get out of listening to you?”

“I won’t treat you like the piece shit you are. Now, why don’t you be a good sub and make me some food.”

She steps away from me and pulls her dominance back. I fix my clothes and quickly get away from her. I frown as I head to the kitchen. It feels too much like I’m doing what she said, but I love cooking and I always cook the meals in the pack house.

I hold back my tears as I make breakfast. This is turning out worst than I thought. She’s taking personal joy out of messing with me. I think back to when I was younger when I thought I would have caring mate that would protect me and love me. I sigh.

After I finish making breakfast, I set the table. To my shock, Aubrey sits at the table. I quickly eat the food off my plate and head back to my room. My head hurts as I lie in bed and fall asleep.

I get woken up by Daniel. My head still hurts. I check the time and see that I slept for only an hour. He touches my shoulder, and the pain in my head vanishes.

“That fucking bitch,” he says. He stands and turns toward the door. I grab his arm to stop him.

“Just leave it alone,” I tell him. He turns towards me with tears in his eyes.

“Leave it alone? How can I leave it alone when the she-wolf that’s suppose to love you is beating you and slowly killing you?”

“I’m handling it.”

“Handle it better or I’m telling Lori and Sam.” Oh goddess, the last thing I need is those two reeking havoc on our pack just because Aubrey pissed them off.

“I will, I am. Okay?”

“Fine.” Daniel pouts. I let go of his arm.

“So what’s my schedule for the day?”

“We’re going to spend time with the pack orphans.”
