NYOMI DRAGGED Jodeci across campus, snapping a photo of the both of them. "We have to get to class! You're making us late!" She complained, snatching her arm back.
Putting her phone down, Nyomi sucked her teeth. "I don't care about no damn class, fuck that damn professor, giving me half credit and shit." She complained, rolling her eyes.
Jodeci shook her off, readjusting the headscarf she had tied around her braids that hung down. She grabbed a notebook out of her backpack before making her way to the large room.
Nyomi followed behind her, opening the double doors to multiple rows of tables and chairs, all lined up behind each other. About six students have already made it inside before them.
"Is there no class today...? Or what?" She looked around, walking inside to her seat. "There's class, the professor might be late. Move so I can sit down!" Jodeci nudged her to the side so she can go find an empty table.
"Mmcht, don't do that. Tryna' show out.." Nyomi mugged her, following behind and setting her bag down.
Shaking her head, she sat down and pulled a few more things out of her bag. The double doors opened up again allowing six more people to walk in, one of them immediately going towards Nyomi.
"Unt unt, get away from me, Kash, you damn peasant!" She backed away from him, taking a seat next to Jodeci.
"I didn't even say a WORD to you!" He argued back, frowning. "You'll be okay, now go sit down." Jodeci told him as he nodded.
"Mmcht, you're so friendly with people, makes me sick!" Nyomi fake-gagged, digging through her backpack. "No I'm not, you just need to be nicer to people." She retorted, shaking her head.
One more group of people came in before the professor walked in behind them. "Hello everybody! Sorry I'm late, I forgot there was even class today." The middle-aged black woman said, standing at the front of the room.
"Jodeci...ain't this class damn near three hours long?" Nyomi tapped her shoulder, showing her schedule to her. "No, it's only two hours and thirty minutes, why?"
"Bitch— that's exactly what I mean! Almost three hours." She facepalmed herself, putting her phone down.
"Yes, class is over. But before you guys leave, I have something to tell you all! There's an upcoming project that I'm assigning but I want you all to get all the information now so you'll be prepared. Everybody take a syllabus." The professor informed them, setting a stack of papers on the table next to her.
Rows of people got up while Jodeci started to shake Nyomi. "Get up, lesson is over." She said, as Nyomi groaned, turning her head. "Let a bad bitch rest..." She hummed, slowly getting up and putting her things in her backpack.
Jodeci got up to grab two syllabuses, passing one to Ny.
She started skimming the paper, flipping through all three papers. "What class is this again?" Nyomi asked, looking at the front and back of the packet again.
Jodeci pointed to the top left-hand corner with her pen, circling it.
"Oh... this seems hard. That professor knows damn well half of us can't draw and she got us designing houses and shit." She ranted, folding the papers and placing them in her backpack.
"The project is to create a unique and contemporary blueprint of a house and create a digital 3-D model of it also, with a partner." Jodeci told her, flipping to the second page.
Nyomi looked at her smiling, waving her paper around. "Wanna be my partner?" "She said we can't choose our affiliates."
Ny sucked her teeth, getting up and walking away. "This is some bullshit!" She said repeatedly to herself, leaving the room as Jodeci followed behind her.
The sun beamed down on everything outside, from the tall green trees to the grey and red pavement that the two girls walked on.
"What class do you have after this?" Jodeci asked, taking off her headscarf and patting her head. "I'm done for the day."
"Okay good, come to the campus library with me so that I can check out books for this project!" Jodeci grabbed onto her hand, leading her towards the building.
"Treating me like a fucking dog, dragging me and shit." Nyomi huffed, not arguing with her. The both of them walked into the library, meeting up with Kash.
"Surprise shawtayyyy!" He whisper-yelled, running up to them. "Aht aht, move." Nyomi dodged him, walking towards a bookshelf.
"Ain't nobody came here for you anyway, bougie ass." He stuck up his middle finger, standing next to Jodeci. "What did you do to her? She doesn't act like that."
Kash shrugged his shoulders, confused. "Shit, I don't know. Now let's go look at some books for this project." He said, letting Jodeci follow behind him towards the informal book section.
"So, who's partnered up with who?" Kash asked, reading a page of The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard. "Did you not pay attention to the lesson?" Jodeci questioned him, running her hands through her braids.
"No...obviously. Now, can you tell me?" He said, setting the book down on the stone table, looking up at her. "The professor said we can't choose our affiliates, she's partnering us up with random people tomorrow."
He slumped back in his chair, groaning before sliding his hands down his face. "This is preposterous." "Be quiet, you'll be alright." Jodeci assured him, patting his head.
Kash just rolled his eyes, staying quiet. "Hey... can you get that book for me on the top shelve? With the zigzags on the spine?" He pleaded, spinning around in the chair.
Jodeci looked back at him, furrowing her eyebrows. "You know I'm short, I can't reach that." She whispered towards him.
He put his hands together in a praying formation, begging. "Please? I'll give you twenty dollars." He offered, pulling a $20 bill out of his pocket.
She sighed deeply, pushing her chair out from underneath the table and getting up.
Walking towards the shelves, she looked up at it, wondering how she'll be able to reach it.
"He did this on purpose, didn't he..." Jodeci thought to herself before reaching her arm up and attempting to grab the book.
She was about to try again until she felt a presence stand behind her. A shadow darkened her vision and a hand reached up to grab the book.
Pulling the book down and handing it to her, they stepped back to give Jodeci some space.
"Hm... thank you." She said quietly, taking the book out of their hands, being face to face with somebody's chest. Looking up, all she could see were their eyes and eyebrows.
A pastel green mask covered the lower half of their face, looking down at her short frame. "You're welcome." The male voice responded, turning away from her and walking away.
