Chapter 20

June 24, 2016

Dear Luke,

Wow this awkward. In the year you've been gone, we have only spoken a few times, and even then it was quite impersonal seeing as we chatted over Facebook. During one of the few times you called, you begged me to come to Merced with you, so that we could finally be together. In the year you have been gone, I've had a lot of time to think. Last year at the end of your letter, you said that love is stronger than any distance, yet when I call you are busy, and when I text you have to much homework to do. When I email, you never respond. As it gets closer to summer, we talk more frequently, we have even decided to work at the same place so we can spend more time together. It's not enough. When people go to college, even the best of friends become estranged and start to drift apart. We move on to bigger and better things. Don't get me wrong, you will always be my best friend, and if you need anything I will be there in the next instant to help you out, but I can't go to Merced with you. I owe it to myself to branch out and try new things and meet new people. In August, I am going to Northwestern University. I will study English and Creative Writing as my majors and I will minor in graphic design. See you soon.

Your friend,

Raine
