Prologue
Ben and I stared in wonder at the small white blob in the sea of black on the ultrasound screen. Our baby.
“Can you believe this?” Ben asked softly, his voice filled with wonder.
I couldn’t believe it. All this time and effort: three years of trying, two years of fertility treatments, countless tests, shots, scans, surgeries….We could finally see what we were working toward. That little white bean flickering away with a strong heartbeat. Tears stung my eyes, and words failed. I could think only “baby” and “ours,” still amazed to finally get there.
I looked up at Ben, smiling through my tears, and said the words I’d been too afraid to say until now.
“I’m pregnant.”
