Why Write? {Wondering}

Why do we write?

We know it's not easy, we know that people are going to tell us it's not a reliable career. We're going to end up on the streets. We're going to starve.

But are we?

After many years of writing for English and other school subjects, then writing fun stories for yourself in your free time, we all still hear the things people tell us, over and over again.

Don't do that. Get a steady job that can provide for you. Keep writing as your hobby, but it can't be your job.

Have we ever asked them why it can't be your job?

In the book "Real Artists Don't Starve" by Jeff Goins (which I 100% recommend reading), I found out some fun things, and in the process, I began having some questions.

What if I can make a living out of writing? How would I attempt to do that? Would I treat it like any other career? Work as hard as I can to learn how to do it well, to learn how to succeed, and then add my own spin to the work?

Because I'm sure I can be that boring teacher in class who only teaches you because she likes the subject matter, not the students. I know I can be a secretary and keep track of names, times, and dates and remind people over and over about things that they should care about but they don't. And I don't mean to put any careers to shame or say that the people doing them aren't doing good enough, but I really want to know.

Are all these artistic positions only for "the best"? What is stopping any supposedly average person from trying to get them?

How many people who wanted to be a writer or a painter or any other kind of artist when they grew up were told "you'll starve" one too many times and gave up?

There aren't easily accessible answers for these questions. I've read books and articles, tried to note everything down, but in the end, I only have one plan of attack. I have one thought, one resolve, that keeps me marching to where I hope the answers will lie.

I am a writer, and I want to prove them wrong.
