Summary

Sometimes, our death is but a resurrection from the grave we called life. How could Officer, Henry have known that when he killed the black boy, Freddie Scott, it was his father that he murdered? Sometimes, our death is but a resurrection from the grave we called life. These are the very words of the psychiatrist to Henry Slayer, a white police officer, when he wakes from a hypnotherapy. One year and three weeks before, Henry had murdered a twenty year old black boy, Freddie Scott, on the lonely grounds of the defunct St. Mary’s College Baltimore. Since then he has had repeated nightmares of a snake swallowing its tail. His mentor refers him to an eccentric psychiatrist. who subjects Henry to a hypnotic session in which he recalls his previous life. In that life Henry had been an African child, Ugwunna, caught up in a complex domestic struggle in which he is manipulated by his uncle into inadvertently poisoning his own father. On the day of his father's funeral, having realized his uncle's role in his father's death, the devastated Ugwunna tries to shoot his uncle but misses. He is immediately borne down by powerful hands and he passes out... ...that is when he wakes from the hypnosis screaming to be let back to avenge his father. He learns from the psychiatrist that Freddie Scott whom he killed a year ago was in fact Ugwunna's (Henry) reincarnated father.
