Graduated

The birds were like flakes of gold,

dancing in the yellow sun.

The many hues of the laughing sunset

shone brightly on my beaming baby's face.

She felt so big and proud,

strong and accomplished,

as she swung the vines of school-first, second, third…

She was a growing weed before my eyes.

She graduated, every time, with such delight.

So many times she graduated, yet so fast…

Not only did she graduate in school,

but also, there was the graduation she did so well, in life…

She became a loving mother of two,

an adoring wife to a charming young man.

She was her daddy's playful poker pal;

the card's bent to her every will.

She was her brother's baseball bat girl.

I hope she still is her mother's fishing friend.

She never left a promise unkept.

She always buckled her belt.

She used only kind words

as well as generous and selfless actions.

Her voice was that of a nightingale.

All of these she graduated in life with a PH.D.

Then the dreadful moment, it came.

I felt a ping in my heart,

clear as crystal,

stronger than diamond.

On this earth, I knew I'd never see again,

I knew I'd have to graduate and move on.

The driver was drunk.

The light was red.

She was the passenger, the victim,

and now, the dead.

She's graduated to the better place,

where God hopes to see each and every face.

She graduated first from birth,

from there to kindergarten,

from kindergarten through to college,

college to wife,

wife to mother,

mother to death.

We must all take this graduated path.

Whether so well,

or not so well.

We shall take it

whether we like it, or not.

We shall soon, one day, meet the face of God.
