it was a date

in the middle of September

when the sun had gone to sleep in the shadowy abyss

and the moon rose overhead, decorating the sky with its crescent smile

and they sat in the trunk, with the

door wide open

and blankets covering their bodies to keep warm

and he kissed her, softly

to tell her he loved her

while the stars poked holes in the darkness

and she kissed him back

to tell him she cared

and the rest of the world slept, unaware of the simple statements that had been made

while they held each other close in the back of the car

just enjoying each other's company

it was a date

before she woke up.
