she had gardens on her hands

ivy scaling her wrists, leaves between her fingers

tiny white blooms on her nails

she was beautiful,

catching the attention of everyone she met

they never could believe their eyes

envying her for her pretty pink petals

so they told her,

"You shouldn't have those"

and

"You aren't like the rest of us"

and she believed them

thinking she was

different

ugly

so she cut them off

leaf by leaf

until all that was left were

scars

where the roots had been

and she told herself

"Now I'm beautiful."
