i wish i could say

i am the byproduct

of my parents’ teachings

proof i learned something

prove i learned how to overcome them

learned from who they were

who i need to be

except i’m trapped in who they are

no experience at being free

how i wished to inherent

my mother’s conviction

one of my fathers’ ethics


those years spent mimicking

their calls, their songs

plays in the harmony of my laughter

i bear them no likeness

my only sense of sameness

coming from my mirror

and pictures of women

long since dead

i’d like to think

we had more in common

than a nose too big

but they all found someone

disheartening proof

that evolution is real
