The Shell

There is a shell of hardened glass
And while it is but rarely seen
It nonetheless fully covers me

The shell was forged when I was young
Before my present life had yet begun
A tiny shell was planted at my feet
And at the time I did not know
One day the shell would start to grow

But then the winds began to blow
And little by little the casing grew
As the bitter winds about me blew
Until the day I was covered true

And while I could yet see the world
The world could not see through to me
