Shadow in the Dark

Shadows swarm on the sidewalk
Stretching east as the sun sets
Never to rise again, while stars
Like wild eyes peer from the sky

Shadows scatter under trees
By the river in the woods
I go there often to sit alone
Under the shadows of the moon

Shadows sneak around the walls
Crawling in corners like spiders
When I reach out to touch them
They fade into a greater shadow

Shadows stretch over family albums
Photographs with missing faces
Where have they gone I wonder?
Leaving me one after another

Shadows slither on my hand
While I jot words for a poem
Covering scars from nights alone
With no thought of morning

Shadows swirl around my eyes
When I’m looking in the mirror
Wondering what shadows lurk
Inside the dark of my mind
