Comfortable In My S(k)in

I am a clean slate, carve into me.

I am a bare canvas, paint me.

I am a white, blank page, ink me.

I am a tapestry masterpiece, stain me.

I am a smooth, permeable surface, only to what I allow to pass through.

But I am stable, strong, and unbreakable, when it comes to the likes of you.

The world we live in wants a woman to change.

But if their transformations aren't ideal in the public eye, then a woman is to blame.

Media wickedly stalks and waits for a woman to come of age.

But younger and younger are girls affected by the media's plight and plague.

Media tells me to alter my body in ways that they claim will appease.

But who exactly would I be making these changes for? Certainly not for me.

We are expected to permanently alter our bodies in unrealistic ways.

Sometimes we rush into procedures that put our lives at stake.

The human body can survive at its worst when hope wanes and everything looks grim.

But we are told to push and push our bodies to their limits just too look perfect, proper and prim.

We poke and prod; we cut and cover.

We add and remove things to look like another.

Black women bleach their bodies as if identifying by their cultural background is a sin.

White women burn their bodies in hopes of the harmful process resulting in darker skin.

So go ahead, tell me I am eternally damaged, with my now forever flawed skin.

Lecture me on how I have created permanent imperfections; with the art that has been engraved in.

I will continue to adorn my body with ink and metal because I choose to do it for me.

And anyone who says otherwise can strive to starve themselves of their own identity.

You may think it's outrageous for me to expose myself to piercings and tattoos.

But I think it's ridiculous to try to be anyone else but you.
