The Sandman and the Lonely Dog
In the still of the night, I hear cars going by.
Traveling the highway parallel to me, going speeds so high.
Their headlights shine through my window, as fleeting reflections on my wall.
Off in the distance I hear the sad sound of one lonely and restless dog call.
He howls the same hollow note in repetition.
Hoping his sound travels to another is his soul ambition.
I realize he's just waiting for another dog to answer his begging cry.
But the others cannot hear him when they're sleeping next to their owners inside.
But in between his broken record player notes, silence fills the sky.
The sandman dances in my imagination, attempting to make me close my eyes.
I guess I better listen to his magical prancing feet.
He is the expert after all, and knows my body needs sleep.
I say my goodbyes to the universe, and tell the world goodnight.
Tomorrow will always bring a new adventure, but first today's time needs to end tonight.
