A Hand To Hold

s.d.g.

(summer camp)

Life’s a little grey around the edges

And maybe the sky’s grown darker around here, but
The storm’s just a storm, and you’re anchored down
The sun still shines behind the clouds.

Your hand is cold even in the summer
The constellations traced in your soul have faded into scars
It’s not too late to fight the monsters of our minds
How far can you run before you’re lost?

So let me offer you a hand, though I haven’t the strength
To hold us both above the waters
But even so, let comfort rest on your shoulders
The world is still a beautiful place.

The shadows of the part have lingered long enough
So with a sigh, just let them go
Without these burdens weighing down your smile
You’re free to fly wherever pleases you.

And if you ever feel your old wounds aching
If you think you’ll soon be dragged under
I’ll offer you a helping hand for yours to hold
Even in the darkness, there will always be a light.

The slightly archaic ones like "whilst" make this resemble a fairytale. The entire idea of a prose poem is brilliant. I didn't get the ending at first, but ...

Makayla Danielle Waits: Just finished one of the most amazing books I have ever read. I connected to it in a way I can't quite put to words. It was as if this person was speaking to me, and me only. Telling me her stories and struggles and how this person handled them and how they worked or how they kept trying; but all...

Pamela40: This author has hit the nail on the coffin.. Their words just speak to you in so many ways on the various relationships we encounter as we journey through life. I would love to read more even a book of their poetry. This is a modern spin on Maya Angelou's boldness when she expressed herself. Ju...

Laraine Smith: I was also a victim of verbal, physical, and sexual abuse by my father. One time, he threatened to beat me with a belt. This story enabled me to talk about it. Thank you. :)
