Alone amongst the tall blades of grass

That have not been cut in many a day

The hatchling slowly opens its eyes

And is greeted by a noisy and unsympathetic world

Disoriented and frightened

The hatchling lets out an almost inaudible chirp

The only thing that feels natural

And it waits

Waits for its mother,

Waits for food,

Waits for anything

The sound of footsteps rustling through the tall blades of grass

Surround the hatchling

And it begins to wonder

If this is where it belongs

Suddenly, a warm embrace encompasses the hatchling

The embrace of a kind soul

A soul who appreciates the fragility of this tiny life

And recognizes the angst and discomposure

The hatchling then senses a soft bed of sticks beneath it

And feels a familiar sense of comfort

A kind soul has returned the hatchling to its home

And expects nothing in return

In a world of trepidation and uncertainty

Be a hatchling’s kind soul.
