chapter six

After we had finished up bowling, it was about 7:30 at night and my mom was bugging me about being home for dinner. Connor laughed, but understood and got all the guys to start finishing up. I had turned in my shoes and was heading for my car when Connor yelled out my name again.

I turned to see him running up to me, “We should do something tomorrow as well. I already have some good intro material for this essay, but I definitely need some more.”

I nodded my head, “Alright, want to hit up the arcade tomorrow?”

He smiled, agreeing immediately. “That sounds fun, I’ll see you in school tomorrow.”

We said our goodbyes, and he actually hugged me around the shoulders before going back to his friends. That was the first time I’ve ever seen Connor have control around a girl. Impressive. When I got home, my parents questioned me, and I gave them honest answers. We’re close, and I truly didn’t have anything to hide from them. We ate dinner together, then they let me go do my homework.

While doing my homework, I texted Ellie, but not as much as usual. Tonight, she seemed to be distant and down about something. The only thing that came to my mind was the Connor took advantage of her and she knew it. I didn’t bother her about it though, for both her sake and mine.

The next morning when I got to school, I immediately saw Ellie standing at my locker, which was not normal at all. She was usually late to homeroom, she never beat me. Once she spotted me, she grabbed my arm and dragged me into the closest bathroom.

“What is wrong with you?” I yanked my arm from her grip.

“Be completely honest, if you were a guy, would you fuck me?”

I laughed while shrugging, “I mean, I guess. You’re pretty, and nice.”

Her shoulders dropped, “Then why wouldn’t Connor?”

I looked at her with wide eyes, “You wanted him to?”

She shrugged, nodding her head. “He’s just so hot, and cute, and really sweet. I told him I was all for it if he wanted and he said he didn’t want to. What the hell did he say to you when you guys went bowling?”

I was speechless for a moment, “We didn’t talk about anything like that, you were only brought up in conversation for a brief moment, that was it. It wasn’t even about sexual stuff, gross.”

She crossed her arms, “Why is he being like this then?”

She dragged out her last word, stomping her feet like an irritating toddler. I wanted nothing more than to slap her, but I was sure not to.

“Look Ellie, I hate that you actually agreed to this relationship thing, I hate that I have to hear about it all, and I really hate that I have to hear about you wanting to sleep with him. For once, I’m liking Connor more than you in this relationship because he’s finally taking things slow. You should feel honored that he’s choosing you as the girl not to jump right in, and then break your heart directly afterwards. So, suck it up buttercup, we need to get to homeroom.”

Ellie was silent for the rest of the morning, and I figured that she was just letting everything I said sink in. When I reached English, I headed to my desk which Connor was already sitting beside. He looked over at me while I sat down, smiling and greeted me.

“What happened with Ellie and you? She’s acting really stupid lately.”

Connor shrugged, separating his English stuff from the pile of notebooks and folders.

“I don’t know. I guess I’ll talk with her later.”

I rolled my eyes, taking out my English stuff as well. “Or you could just tell me what happened after you know what.”

He laughed, “You can say it, you know. It’s not like I don’t know what it is.” I didn’t say anything else, but just stared until he spoke. “Fine, last ni-”

“Students! I assume your projects are in full speed right now, and you all are getting some great information about each other to share with the class in a beautifully written essay?”

Everyone nodded their heads, and I had to turn my attention away from Connor.

Mr. Porter sat on the edge of his desk, crossing his arms while questioning, “How many of you think you’re going to need today during class to work on it?”

Most kids raised their hands, even if they didn’t need the class day. They just didn’t want to do work.

“Alright, today is the last class day to work on it then. Go on, discuss with partners. I’ll be walking around still and checking on you all. Also, before you leave, I have textbooks to hand out.”

There were groans, but everyone went back to speaking with the people closest to them.

“Continue your story, Connor.”

He sighed, pushing his notebook away.

“Last night, Ellie told me that she was alright with me taking advantage of her, and having sex with her.”

I waited, but he didn’t say anything else.

“Yeah, so? That’s what she wants. She wants to sleep with you, and you not accepting her offer really hurt her.”

Connor was starting to get confused.

“Is that what you people think I’m doing? Just taking advantage of girls left and right?”

I shrugged, speaking quietly, “I mean, that’s what it kind of looks like.”

Connor shook his head and turned to face the front of the room.

“Yeah, well, that’s why I didn’t sleep with her when she was pushing the idea. I know to you, it may seem like I just asked your best friend out as a way to sleep with her and then move onto you afterwards, but it’s more than that. I did this to prove to you, that I’m not a… you know what.”

I laughed a quick laugh, “You can say the word, I know what it is.”

He glared towards me, “You know I hate the term.”

“So, let me get this straight, you got with my best friend to prove something to me.”

He stopped me quickly by interrupting, “To prove that I can be in a relationship.”

I waved him off, “Yeah, whatever. But to make this relationship last, you do know that you should be working to keep Ellie happy, not me. So, if she wants something that will make her happy, but not me, then you should be more focused on what she wants, not me.”

He smiled, facing me again, “Are you giving me permission to sleep with your best friend?”

I held my arms up in surrender, “I’m just doing what would make her happy. Do you understand how relationships work now?”

He nodded his head, “I think I got it. Now, back to this paper, how’s this sound for an introduction?”
