Chapter 19

// A f t e r s c h o o l \

After what Quinn had told me, I still decided to hangout with Hunter. I haven’t talked to him in awhile, so this is a good thing, right? I didn’t quite understand what she meant when she brought up understanding the other’s ‘feelings’ and she didn’t want to tell me.

I heard running from behind me and turned to see it was Hunter. “Hey, Maria!” he greeted with a big smile. “Are you ready to go?” he asked.

“Hey, and yeah. I’m ready, where are we going?” I asked.

“Ice cream shop, my treat.” he replied.

“Your treat? Are you sure?” I asked. “You know, I have the money to pay for myself.”

“Yes, my treat and I’m sure.” he replied. “So, let’s get going to my car?” he asked as I nodded.

Hunter walked down the hallway as I followed him to the school parking lot, we then stopped in front of his car which was a white Prius with black rims, and it was just gorgeous.

“Wow, nice car.” I commented as I walked around the car admiring it.

“Thanks, she’s my pride and joy.” he replied putting a hand gently on his car.

“She?” I questioned looking over at him with a raised eyebrow.

“Yes, this car is a she. And she has a name also, Nina.” Hunter replied.

“You named your car?” I asked bursting out into a fit of laughter.

“Yeah, I do. Problem?” he asked.

“No, no problem at all.” I replied as he unlocked his car and I went into the passenger’s seat as he went into the driver’s seat.

When he started his car the first thing he did was turn on the radio, and the first thing that played when it was turned was Too Good by Drake.

“Aye, this is my jam!!” I said happily.

“Then why don’t you sing it?” he asked as he drove his car out of the school parking lot and onto the road.

“Don’t tell me how to live my life,” I replied with my arms crossed.

I was just waiting for my favorite part, and that’s when it came on…

“Yeah, and last night I think I lost my patience.” I sang.

“Last night, I got high as your expectations last night, I came to a realization.” I sang again.

“And I hope you can take it, I hope you can take it,” I sang using my fist as a fake mic looking at Hunter, then looked ahead.

“I’m too good to you, I’m way to good to you! You take my love for granted, I just don’t understand it~!” I sang outloud.

Hunter wasn’t even paying attention to my singing, thank goodness.

I basically kept going into my singing outbursts every time any of my favorite songs came on the radio.

It wasn’t long before we reached the ice cream shop, since I didn’t really wanna talk I just told him what ice crean flavor I wanted while he ordered and I find us seats.

I found an empty table for two and sat down, not long after Hunter came walking towards me with two ice creams bowls setting mine down on the table with the spoon in it already.

“Thank you!” I said with a sweet smile and immediately took a bite from my ice cream.

“No problem,” Hunter replied with a soft chuckle sitting across me eating his ice cream.

I looked over at him as he ate his ice cream. “What flavor did you get?” I asked.

“I got green tea,” he replied. “Wanna try some?” he asked holding his bowl of ice cream out towards me.

“Hmm.. don’t mind if I do!” I replied and took a small scoop from his ice cream and put into my mouth. I stayed silent for a little.

“Well, what do you think?” he asked.

“I think…” I paused, “I found the flavor I’m gonna get next time!” I said happily as he just looked at me and laughed softly.

“I’m glad you like it.” Hunter replied still laughing softly.

The two of us then continued eating our ice cream silently, it was completely silent. But it was not awkward at all, for me at least.

“Hey, Maria, is it okay if I ask you a question?” Hunter asked breaking the silence.

I looked up at him. “Yeah, go ahead.” I replied with a small smile.

“Why do you like Jason so much?” he asked.

Should I tell him? Or should I not? I trust Hunter, and he’s a good friend…

“I like Jason so much because he’s a great guy.” I replied with a smile.

“But, what makes him a great guy?” he asked.

“Wellll, he makes me laugh, and smile.” I replied thinking a bit, then smiled.

“Hey, Maria, is it okay if I ask you a question?” I asked practically breaking the silence between us.

I kept my eyes on her as she looked up at me. “Yeah, go ahead.” she replied with a small smile.

“Why do you like Jason so much?” I asked.

“I like Jason so much because he’s a great guy.” she replied with a smile.

“But, what makes him a great guy?” I asked.

“Wellll, he makes me laugh, and smile.” she replied smiling.

He makes her laugh and smile, don’t I do that already? What am I doing wrong? What am I missing? What does he have that I don’t?

I wanted to ask her all those things, but I just couldn’t bring myself to ask any of them.

“I see,” I nodded a bit looking down not sure what to say. “Thank you for telling me.” I replied.

“No need, why do you ask?” she asked resting her elbow on the table and her chin on her hand.

When I looked at her, she was looking directly at me and that’s when our eyes met.

I was getting lost in her beautiful brown eyes, I’ve never noticed them before.

Maria was just looking at me waiting for a response, so I just broke our gaze and replied with, “Just to ask.”

“Just to ask?” Maria laughed. “I bet you were asking because there’s a girl you like and you want to know how to win her over.” she replied.

I just looked at her when she mentioned a girl I was ‘trying’ to win over. I wanted to say she was the girl I was trying to win over but the words just wouldn’t come out. And if it did, I would probably just mess up everything I actually wanted to say to her.

“Haha, you’re definitely right…” I laughed.

You’re the girl I want to win over, you’re the one I chose to like— not even like, more like love then like. But you wouldn’t choose me.
