Chapter 41

If she’s upset about something, why not try to cheer her up with some ice cream and a romcom movie? Though, I’m hoping by the time I arrive there that Quinn is gone. Because she might not let me anywhere near her in the state that she is currently in.

Once I got to the store, I bought a bucket of green tea ice cream. I remembered from the time we went to ice cream parlor that if we ever went again she’d get green tea next time. I also bought a romcom movie called, “Crazy Beautiful You” it looked nice on the cover.

When I had everything, I paid for it all at the self-checkout and started heading to Maria’s house in less then 15 minutes. I headed to the front door and rung the doorbell waiting for someone to answer the door.

I heard the door about to open and held the ice cream and movie in hand, it was her Mom.

“Oh, Hunter nice of you to drop by!” she greeted with a smile while opening the door wide open. “Come on in,” she added.

I walked inside. “Where’s Maria?” I asked.

“Oh, my poor baby. She’s upstairs in her room, she hasn’t been feeling to well since she left school.” her Mom replied.

“Is anyone up there with her?” I asked.

“No, her friend— Quinn I think just dropped her off.” she replied.

“May I go up and see her?” I asked.

“Well, considering you brought ice cream and a movie for her I don’t why not.” she replied. “Her room is first door on the left.”

“Thank you,” I replied with a small smile I headed upstairs until…

“Wait,” her Mom said going into the kitchen to get something, a spoon.

“Oh, right. Thank you Ms. Anne.” I replied now actually heading upstairs.

First door on the… left. I knocked.

“Mom, I’m fine. I just wanna be alone for now.” Maria said, I just opened the door.

“Hey,” I said closing the door behind me and walking over to her. “I heard you were upset about something, so I brought you some ice cream and a movie for us to watch.” I added handing her the spoon and bucket of green tea ice cream.

“Thank you.” she replied in soft tone taking the spoon and bucket of ice cream eating it.

“I’ll go set up the movie,” I replied heading to tv, opening the television, putting it into a certain input, and inserting the CD into the DVD player.

When it showed the menu home page place, it mentioned subtitles. That’s when I realized, I didn’t buy an English romcom movie. But I’m still hoping she’ll enjoy the movie. I skipped all the commercials, and once the movie was about to play, I sat down on the bed beside Maria watching it with her.

1 hour passed, and even though I accidentally bought a Filipino romcom movie… she enjoyed every second of it. She even almost cried at the cute parts and cried at the sad parts.

“Did you enjoy the movie?” I asked.

“Mhm, thank you.” she replied, taking the now empty bucket of ice cream and setting it down on the small table beside her bed and looking over at me with a small smile.

“Are you okay?” I asked looking at her with a sincere expression.

I didn’t ask just to ask, I asked because I genuinely cared for her.

Maria just chuckled a bit before replying with, “Honestly. I’m not.”

“Why’s that?” I asked.

She moved her head from side to side, probably debating whether or not to tell me.

“Jason and I broke up.” she replied holding back her tears.

“What? Why?” I asked, surprised at the fact they broke up.

I’m surprised because they really seemed into each other, and now their just… separated.

She looked away from me for a bit.

“Uh, um.. Jason. He didn’t want me to hang around you because he said he didn’t trust you around me.” she replied, fake chuckling a bit. “And then, he gave me a decision.”

“What decision?” I asked.

“He made me choose between you and him.” she replied. “And I chose you.” she added.

I stayed silent for awhile looking down at the bedsheets, processing everything in my head. She chose me, so basically because of me.. she cried. Because of me, they broke up.

Man, do I feel like complete shit right now.

“You didn’t have to choose me.” I murmured.

“What?” she asked, looking over at me again.

“I said, you didn’t have to choose me.” I replied. “You wanted Jason, so why did you choose me?” I asked looking at her as she looked at me our eyes meeting for a second before she looked away.

“Because, I always have a good time with you. Because, you’re always there for me. Because, you’re my best friend.” she replied. “What do you mean, why did I choose you?” she asked. “You’ve always been there for me, you’ve always been close to me. How could I not choose you?” she asked again.

“But you’re sad without him.” I replied, in a soft yet hurt tone.

At that moment, all the tears she was holding in came crashing down and started rolling down her cheeks. She looked away and covered her face.

“I don’t know what to do,” she sobbed. “I am sad without him. I know it’s only be a few hours since the break up, but I really am sad without him.” she sobbed again.

Her tears fell one after the other, I didn’t know what to do besides get closer to her and pull her into a tight embrace.

“I’m sorry, I look so pathetic right now.” she laughed while trying to stop her tears.

“Don’t say that.” I replied rubbing her back to calm her down.

I was gonna say another thing, but I decided to keep it to myself. Which was, even when she was crying, and thought she looked like a complete mess. I thought she was still absolutely beautiful.

Even when Maria had calmed down, she was still in my arms and hugging me back.

“Hunter.” she said softly.

“Yes?” I replied looking down at her.

“Thank you.” she replied.

“For what?” I asked.

“Dealing with me, and everything you do for me in general. I appreciate you,” she replied, the tone of her voice still ever so soft.

“That’s not something you need to thank me for,” I replied chuckling a bit. “Instead, I should be the one saying thank you.” I added.

“Thank you for what?” she asked, sounding really not sure what I was saying thanks for.

“Thank you for choosing me.”
