Chapter 45

“Maria.” I said glancing over at her then back at the road.

“Yeah?” she asked, I could feel her eyes on me.

“I think it’s time for me to tell you.” I replied.

“Tell me what?” she asked curiously.

“About my family being incomplete.” I replied. “You should at least know, after all, you are the closest person to me.” I added.

“I’m all ears if you’re ready to tell me,” she replied as I glanced over at her to see her body fully turned towards me as if she was paying attention.

“Well, it all started when I was younger..” I said, right about now it should turn into a flashback, so author do your thing!

• ~ Flashback ~ •

“How could you do this to me?! How could you do this to us? We have a family, we have two kids..” Mom yelled and cried miserably.

I was upstairs peeking through the stairs as my Mom yelled and cried.

“Honey, it was a mistake, I swear! I never meant to hurt you,” Dad replied.

“Did you even think about the family you had back home when you did it?” she asked sorrowfully.

“I—” Dad paused, now looking down at the ground. “I didn’t..” he added in a disappointed tone. “But, it really was a mistake— I’ll tell her to get an abortion because I have a—” Mom cut him off.

“You’re a terrible Father to our children.” she replied. “And you can’t tell a woman you got pregnant to just get an abortion, it’s her baby. It’s her choice, if she doesn’t want one then she doesn’t one.” she added.

“But, our kids— I have them to take care of, I can’t—” Dad was cut off once more.

“I want you out out of this house, right now. I’ll send you the divorce papers.” Mom said firmly, she was hurt, but she tried not to act like she was.

“Honey, I—” he was cut off again.

“I said now.” she replied trying to regain her composure.

Dad did nothing but sighed and headed upstairs as he passed by me. Once he was out of sight, I looked back down at my Mom as her knees buckled and she was kneeling on the floor crying her eyes out.

• ~ End of Flashback ~ •

“It happened when I was 8, and my younger sister was 6.” I said pushing my lips together. “She went with Dad, and Mom kept telling her she didn’t have to go. When she chose to go, my Mom was in tears. I didn’t know what to say since I was still young then, so all I did was hug her as comfort.” I added with no emotion.

“Hunter, I’m so sorry..” Maria replied in a soft yet fragile tone. “You had a little sister? Do you still keep in touch with her?” she asked.

“No need to be sorry, it was a long time ago. My Mom’s fine now, and yeah, I did. I don’t keep in touch with her, and I haven’t seen her for a long time now.” I replied.

It was silent for a few minutes, then I glanced over at her only to see her head hanging low. Did she feel sorry for me after hearing all that? Maybe it wasn’t the right time to tell her..

“Thank you for telling me.” she said breaking the silence, I looked over a bit as she looked at me then back at the road with a soft chuckle.

“I should be the one to thank you for listening,” I replied with a small smile. “I’ve never told anyone that story before,” I added.

“You haven’t?” she asked. “Then.. why tell me the story?” she asked.

“Because, you’re different.” I replied.

“How so?” she asked, when she asked that we were already at her house and I had just parked.

“You actually care enough to listen.” I replied, my arms above the steering wheel as I looked at her, and she looked at me. “I think if I had a person like you back then, I would’ve turned out just fine.” I chuckled.

“You seem fine to me, and a person like what?” she asked curiously, sitting in the seat criss crossed as she looked at me.

“Because you’re here.” I replied. “And, a person who always take the sun with them wherever they go.” I added with a big smile.

“Sun? What sun do I take with me?” she asked.

“Your smile, your laugh. I’m pretty sure it could brighten up anyone’s day, it sure brightens up my bad days.” I replied followed by a chuckle and smiled.

Even though we were right outside her house, we both chose to stay in the car and just talk. Every time she laughed, every time she smiled as we talked.. she made me wonder if it was too late to make her mine.

Then, my phone rung. It was Jack calling.

“I’m gonna take this phone call real quick,” I said before picking it up and answering.

“Hello?” I answered waiting for a response.

“Aye, Hunter! You busy tomorrow?” he asked.

“Not at all, why?” I asked.

“You should come tomorrow, we’re going to a bar to just hangout and catch up on things. You could invite Rose and Maria if you want,” he replied.

“I’ll ask, give me a second.” I said and looked over at Maria.

“Mari, do you want to go to the bar with Jack, Cole, possibly Rose, and me?” I asked.

“I’ll go if Rose goes.” she replied with a smile.

“Oh! Maria’s with you right now?” Jack asked through the phone. “Tell her I said hi!” he added.

“Okay, and Jack said hi.” I replied.

“Hi Jack!” Maria responded.

Jack just chuckled. “Well, if you’re going let me know and I’ll text you the details.” he said before hanging up.

Right when he hung up, I dialed Rose and put her on speaker.

“Hello?” Rose answered.

“Are you busy tomorrow?” I asked.

“Sounds like you’re asking me out,” she replied followed by a playful chuckle. “But, no. Why?”

“Very funny.” I laughed. “Also, Jack, Cole, and me are going to the bar tomorrow. And Maria said she would only go if you were going.” I replied.

“A bar? As in drinking?” she questioned.

“Yeah, of course not a lot for the drivers..” I replied.

“I don’t see why not,” she replied. “Is Maria there with you?” she asked.

“Yeah.” I replied.

“See you there Maria!” Rose exclaimed.

“I guess so, see ya there Rose!” she replied.

I took a short hot shower, afterwards I dried myself up and got changed into a white shirt and black jeans along with converse.

“Are you ready to go?” I texted Maria.

“Yup~! (:” she texted back.

“Alright, I’m heading there now.” I texted, and got my keys heading downstairs then into the car and driving over to her house.

It was sunny outside, but not too hot.

I honked, and as usual she came out and walked over to the car sitting in the passenger’s seat.

“Can you text Rose we’re on the way?” I asked.

“Yeah, sure.” she replied and took out her phone texting her as I began driving.

Minutes later, we arrived and I called her telling her we were here as she left her house and headed to the backseat.

“Alright. Are we all ready to—” I paused and looked at the two with no seat belts on.

“I’ll wait for you guys to put on your seat belt,” I said with my arms crossed waiting on them.

“Okay. Now can we go?” Rose asked, in reply to her question I just started driving.

Miss Independent by Ne-Yo came on.

“Ooh there’s somethin’ about just something about the way she moves, and I can’t figure it out, there’s something about her.” Maria sang.

“Said ooh it’s somethin’ about kinda woman that want you but don’t need you, and I can’t figure it out, there’s somethin’ about her~” Rose sang along with Maria as well.

Once it reached the Chorus, I sang along.

“She got her own thing, that’s why I love her. Miss Independent, won’t you come and spend a little time? She got her own thing, that’s why I love her Miss Independent, ooh the way you shine, Miss Independent.” I sang.

Then, we reached the bar. Cole and Jack was waiting for us outside.

“Good to see you guys,” Jack greeted.

“You too.” Rose replied with a small smile.

“Let’s head inside?” I suggested as they all nodded and we headed in.

There was a lot of people today, there was a bar, and a dance floor full of possibly drunk people.

“You want a drink Maria?” I asked.

“Yes please,” she replied.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“Surprise me.” she replied with a smile.

Jack asked Rose the same thing, and got the same response as Maria.

Cole was already at the bar before us, drinking already.

“So, you and Rose?” I asked Jack.

“Just getting to know her for now, that’s all.” Jack replied followed by a soft chuckle. “How about you and Maria?” he asked.

“I’ve liked her for awhile now,” I replied.

“You have?!” Jack asked surprise.

“Yes! Have you not seen the way he looks at Maria before?!” Cole joined in. “Goodness Jack, get with the program!” he added.

“I didn’t even notice I made it obvious, I guess both you and Maria were oblivious to it.” I replied.

The bartender came by and both Jack and I ordered the girls a Martini, while we took a shot because we were the ones driving. We don’t need to be drunk to have some fun.

We then walked back over to the girls and handed them their Martinis, the four of us just talked while Cole was by now on the dance floor dancing with some random girl.

“Wanna dance?” I asked Maria.

“Sure, let’s goooo~!” she replied, grabbing my hand and leading me into the dance floor.

Jack danced with Rose, I get the feeling they’re getting along well. After dancing for what seemed like a hour, we left the bar and headed home. Rose rode with Jack and Cole.

After dancing for a bit, we decided to continue our day at Cole’s house and play a game of truth or dare.

“Jack, truth or dare?” Rose asked.

“I pick truth.” Jack replied.

“Lameee. But, is it true you and Quinn were an item before?” she asked.

“No, but. I did like her, I was hoping to become an item with her soon but then.. she went off and did her own thing.” he replied.

“Cole, truth or dare?” Jack asked.

“I’m not scared, so dare.” he replied.

“Alright, I dare you too… imitate a monkey.” Jack replied, then Cole got up making monkey noises while hopping up and down with his hands doing the same thing.

All of us were just there laughing at him.

“Rose, truth or dare?” Cole asked.

“Dareee~” Rose replied followed by a chuckle.

“Alright. I dare you to sit on Jack’s lap until your next turn.” Cole replied.

“Dare accepted.” she replied, hopping onto Jack’s lap willingly with a playful smile.

“Maria. Truth or dare?” Rose asked.

“Truth.” Maria replied with a smile.

“Is it true that you’ve already had your first kiss?” Rose asked.

“Nopeeee!” she replied with a smile.

“Really? Not even with Jason?” Jack asked.

“Not even Jason. We dated for awhile, but he was never my first kiss.” she replied.

I looked at Rose, only to see her wiggling her eyebrow at me as if saying I could be her first kiss which just made me chuckle quietly.

“Hunter, truth or dare?” Maria asked me.

“Dare.” I replied.

I mean, choosing dare when it comes to Maria wouldn’t be so bad, right?

“Okay,” Maria smiled, thinking. “I dare you to kiss the cutest person in the room.” she added looking at me with a satisfied smile.

Okay, I take back what I said.

“Aye man, don’t kiss me. I know I’m cute and all, but nah.” Cole replied jokingly.

“I-I mean kiss the cutest person in the room on the cheek.. not lips.” Maria added hesitantly.

“Cutest person? Okay.” I replied going up to her and kissing her cheek before pulling away.

“That settles it, to Hunter, Maria’s the cutest person in the room!” Jack chuckled.

“Aw man, I thought I was.” Cole joked again.

I laughed at the responses then looked back at Maria to see her cheeks turning pink-ish.

“Now that’s definitely adorable!” Rose commented with a smile looking at her.

Is it just me, or did everyone start supporting me with Maria?

After a few truths and dares, and drinks for the passengers.. we all headed home. Rose went with Jack, and Maria went with me.

“Hunterrr. Can I stay over tonight? My Mom’s gonna kill me if I come home like this, and I don’t think I’ll be able to make it to my doorstep on my own.” Maria said drunkly.

“I don’t see why not.” I replied chuckling. “But, before you go to sleep make sure you have some water. Okay?” I replied glancing at her.

“Ay, ay Captain!” she replied before knocking out in the passenger’s seat.

Once we reached my house, not wanting to wake her up yet I just carried her out of the passenger’s seat, into my house, then set her down on the couch gently so I could fully close my front door. Then I headed to the kitchen and poured her a glass of water walking back over to the living room and kneeling on the couch gently shaking her,

“Drink some water,” I said, shaking her gently.

“I’m tireddddd.” she groaned turning away from me.

“You said you’d drink some water before you sleep.” I replied.

“But, I’m already asleep.” she replied tiredly.

“If you don’t drink some water, you’re not sleeping on a comfortable bed.” I replied.

She stayed silent for a little while before replying with, “Okay.” and trying to sleep again.

So yeah, the night consisted of me convincing her to drink some water which I eventually did and ended up carrying her up to my room and gently laying her on my bed.

Out of respect for Maria, I took a thick blanket and laid it on the floor beside my bed and slept there. When morning came, Maria was gone. I checked downstairs, and she was talking with my Mom! I’m just hoping my Mom didn’t bring up her being the girl I liked.

“Uh, good morning.” I greeted from the stairs walking down.

“Morning Hunter!” Maria greeted cheerfully.

How can she be so cheerful? I bet her head’s killing her right now..

“Is this the wonderful girl you were talking about before?” Mom asked with a smile.

“Yes, my best friend.” I replied with a smile.

Seeing Maria reminds me of the time I first slept over at her house, oh how the roles have changed this time around.

“I should start dropping you off by now, we’ve already missed 1st period.” I mentioned.

“You know, I think I’m gonna rest up today instead when I get home.” she replied kicking her feet.

And so I dropped her off. Before she left the car of course, I gave her some medicine for the huge headache she had. What happens when you drink too much.. I offered to stay with her and take care of her, but she didn’t want me to miss school because of her.

“Fine. But, I’m gonna come by after school to check on you, okay?” I said looking over at her in the passenger’s seat.

“Okay, okay. Now go to school, you already missed 1st period.” she replied.

Honestly, when I arrived at school all I wanted was for school to be over already.

“Hunter,” I heard a familiar voice call out to me as I looked back to see Quinn.

“How’s Maria?” she asked.

“Like you’d actually want to know.” I replied.

“I do, actually. She’s my best friend,” she replied.

I just looked at her with my arms crossed.

“Okay, was my best friend. Look, I really do feel bad for what I did. The thing with Jason and I— it just happened.” she replied. “I just want to patch things up with her, even if things won’t be the same anymore.”

MARIA’S POV:

I was waiting for school to be over, even though I wasn’t at school. But because I wanted to see Hunter after, I was gonna protest at first but I just couldn’t. I don’t know why honestly.

“Maria, one of your friend’s are here to see you!” Mom called from downstairs.

“Alright, I’m coming!” I yelled back, walking downstairs.

When I walked downstairs, I peeked a bit to see who it was. And honestly, I didn’t know how to feel when I saw them.

“Jason, wha-what are you doing here?” I asked.

Jason startled by my voice stood up rubbing the back of his neck as he looked over at me. “I need to talk to you.”
