Chapter 47

“The new guy arriving here has to do with you because, when he first came here, he was—” Rose was cut off.

“Maria, it’s so nice to see you again.” a male with dark auburn hair and dark brown eyes greeted with a smile standing beside Hunter.

“He’s standing behind me, isn’t he?” Rose asked as I pursed my lips and nodded as she turned around.

“But, anyways. Ky! It’s been awhile!” I greeted back walking over to him and giving him a hug.

“It definitely has. I haven’t heard from you since you moved.” he replied chuckling as he hugging me back.

“Yeah, sorry about that.” I replied pulling away from the hug.

Rose & Hunter stood side by side looking at us with their arms crossed.

“This is my childhood friend, Kyle. Ky for short.” I introduced him to the two. “And these two are Rose and Hunter.” I introduced the two to him.

“Also, Maria & I are the original duo. To whomever is Maria’s best friend here.” he replied with a smile.

“That would be me.” Hunter replied raising his hand with a bland look.

“Well, aren’t you brave mentioning it?” Kyle replied with his arms crossed as he gave Hunter a devilish smile.

“Oh, shut up. You’re not gonna do anything, and even if you had planned to I wouldn’t let you.” I replied looking at him with an eyebrow raised and my arms crossed.

Hunter just eyed both Kyle and I before clearing his throat to speak.

“Anyways. I was wondering if you were busy after school, maybe you’d like to go to an archery place with me?” Hunter asked with a small smile.

“Sure, I’d love too!” I replied with a smile looking at Hunter. “Can Kyle come with us?” I asked looking back at him keeping the same smile on my face.

“Uh, err.. if he wants to go.” Hunter replied as I looked back at Kyle waiting for a reply.

“I don’t see why not, is it just gonna be us three?” Kyle asked.

“No, Rose is coming as well.” Hunter replied.

Then the bell rang.

“Okay, where should I meet you guys after school?” Kyle asked.

“At the front.” Rose replied.

“Okay, thanks. Also, Mari, can you show me to my next class?” Kyle asked as I nodded.

“We’ll see you guys later!” I said waving to Hunter & Rose who ended up walking to class together.

ROSE’S POV:

“You know, I don’t really remember you asking me if I wanted to go.” I murmured.

“Right. Do you want to go?” Hunter asked.

“That all depends as to why you want me too,” I replied looking up at Hunter with a smile.

“I get the feeling.. if Kyle’s going, I may be third wheeling with them. And if I am, it’d be nice to have someone to talk to.” he replied modestly.

“Aw, alright. I’ll go then, only because I don’t want you to feel like a third wheel if that does happen.” I replied followed by a chuckle and ended it with a smile.

“Well, I’m this way.” Hunter chuckled pointing at the direction he was gonna go.

“Okay, I’ll see ya at lunch!” I replied walking the opposite direction from him.

Right now, I had English with Jack.

“Morning Rose,” Jack greeted with a smile.

“Good morning!” I greeted returning the smile.

“Are you by any chance available this Saturday?” he asked nervously.

Jack nervously asking made me chuckle.

“That just depends, why?” I asked with an amused smile as I looked at him.

“I’d love to get to know you more,” he replied with a smile.

“Would you now?” I asked teasingly, which made Jack tense up a bit.

“Well.. if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be implying it.” Jack remarked.

“Saturday it is~!” I replied cheerfully ending with a smile.

“Rose, would you like to share why you’re being so loud?” the teacher asked.

“Oh, er.. sorry.” I replied covering my mouth with one hand as the teacher looked at me once more before continuing to teach again.

After school I met up with Hunter, Maria, and Kyle. We were talking about who’s riding with who, originally I thought I was gonna ride with Hunter.. but, Kyle had different plans.

“I’ll have Rose ride with me, just text me the location Mari,” Kyle mentioned.

“Okay!” Maria replied with a smile walking away with Hunter to his car.

“You’ve been here for awhile now, so any information I need to know?” Kyle asked me as we walked to his car.

“What kind of information are you looking for?” I asked glancing over at him.

“Information. Like, who likes Maria.” he replied discreetly.

“Why would I tell you?” I asked.

“Because, I’m her best friend. And whoever likes her, that she may possibly like back.. I want to make sure he’s the type of guy who will treat her right.” he replied.

“Aren’t you an overprotective friend,” I replied.

We made it to his car, and when he unlocked his car we both went inside and buckled up.

“She’s been my best friend since we were kids, I just want her to be happy. I want to protect her, and make sure she doesn’t end up getting hurt.” he replied sighing.

“And what if I said you didn’t need to protect her?” I replied as he set up the location.

“Give me a good reason why I wouldn’t need too.” Kyle chuckled, sounding unease.

“The guy that likes her, he makes her happy. He’s always there for her, he takes her out to try new things.” I replied with a smile.

When he searched up the location on the maps and started driving, his main focus was on the road but we still managed to talk.

“Uh huh, and just who is that guy?” he questioned.

“He’s Hunter,” I replied.

An unsure smile appeared on his face as he gripped the steering wheel firmly.

“Hunter, huh? Well, I guess we’ll just have to see about that when we get to the archery.” he replied.

We went to an archery range in San Francisco, and it was outdoors. Oh yeah, and hot. We were showed how to hold the bow and arrow, Hunter was the first to shoot at the target. And all I can say was two words; show off. Most of his arrows hit the red target in the middle. Our instructor was nearby watching us as well. Before you guys ask, it was a guy.

“Kyle, you wanna go next?” Hunter asked looking over at him while standing in his place.

“Sure,” he replied walking over as Hunter walked to Maria and the three of us just watched him.

In all honesty, Kyle wasn’t as good as Hunter. He missed the target a lot more at times, but he was still solid.

“Good job Kyle!” Maria said holding a hand up to him as he high fived her.

“Thanks,” Kyle replied chuckling. “You wanna go next?” he asked.

“Sure!” she replied cheerfully stepping up.

Maria stepped up, and shot one. Too far from the red target.

“Here, I’ll show you how too aim it.” the male instructor said stepping behind her and almost putting his hands on her, almost because Hunter came along.

“Nah, no need. I’ll teach her.” Hunter replied causing the instructor to move aside as he stepped behind Maria instead and put his hands over hers.

Kyle and I were just listening on in their conversation.

“Keep your arms steady, focus on the target.” Hunter instructed, his hands still over hers still in the same position. “Once you think it’s focused, release it.” he added, and when he let go of her she let go of the arrow and shot directly at the red target.

“Uh, thanks. I think I got it now,” Maria replied looking back at him with a small smile as he stepped back and watched her.

She didn’t exactly hit the red target like the first time, but she was close. Me on the other hand, I missed A LOT. I only about 1 that was really close to the red target. I mean, that’s good enough right?

“Anyone up for some dumplings?” Hunter asked looked at us.

“I’m most definitely in!” Maria replied.

“Maria and food,” Kyle chuckled.

“Tell me about it, I sometimes buy her breakfast in the morning.” Hunter replied with a smile.

KYLE’S POV:

Maybe this Hunter guy isn’t so bad after all, he’s been kind to Maria while I wasn’t around.

“Hunter, I’m gonna go ride with Kyle to the dumpling place, okay?” Maria mentioned looking over at him with a smile.

“Alright, we’ll see you there then.” he replied, Hunter and Rose walking to his car as Maria walked beside me to mine.

“I never really got the chance to ask, but what happened?” Maria asked glancing at me.

“I don’t know what you mean.” I replied.

“You wouldn’t just leave the neighborhood you grew up in without a reason.” she replied, concern showed in the tone of her voice.

When we made it to my car, we both got inside and buckled up.

“The real reason I’m here..” I said starting the car before gripping the steering wheel and driving out of the parking lot. “So, my parents. They got divorced,” I added pushing my lips together.

“Oh. I’m sorry..” Maria replied in a soft tone.

“There’s no need to be sorry, they weren’t happy with each other. It’s understandable, why would you want to be with someone who no longer makes you happy?” I questioned.

“Who are you living with?” she asked.

“I’m living with my Mom, originally we were gonna stay near the neighborhood but she was offered a really good job opportunity here that she’s been thinking about for awhile now. And she decided to take it to fully leave Dad after the divorce.” I replied.

After telling her the real reason why I was here, the ride to the dumpling place was quiet. Honestly, I didn’t want to tell her. Because, I already knew she’d feel bad about me telling her this. Why wouldn’t she? She’s Maria. It’s just her character.

“Maria, if you’re pitying me, please don’t.” I said breaking the silence. “My Mom is fine, I promise you. I’m fine too.” I added.

“How do I know you’re telling the truth?” she asked in a soft tone as I glanced over at her to see her glancing down at her hands.

I laughed, “Why would I lie to you?” I asked.

We finally made it to the dumpling place, most of the time she was quiet. Unless she was telling me where to turn and all that. Rose and Hunter were already inside so we went inside as well.

“How was the ride?” Rose asked with a smile.

“Good, mostly silent.” I replied sitting beside Rose as Maria sat beside Hunter.

Not gonna lie, looking at the two side by side made me think they’d actually make a cute couple together. All that’s left? To push them together. Most of our orders consisted of soup and noodles, and of course dumplings.

After eating, Rose walked beside Maria talking with her. Those two were pretty far, far enough for me to talk about Maria with Hunter.

“Maria’s cute, huh?” I questioned.

“Cute? That word doesn’t really describe her.” he replied.

“Oh? Then what word does?” I asked.

“Beautiful.” he replied. Realizing what he said, he tried to back it up by saying, “Uh, I mean amazing.”

“You wanna see something really funny but cute?” I asked.

“What?” he questioned.

“Play disney songs in the car on your way to drop her off.” I laughed. “It’s really funny, but also cute to me. If you do actually do it, tell me what you thought about it.” I added chuckling softly.

HUNTER’S POV:

I wanted to see what the funny and cute thing that Kyle was talking about, so I did it. On my way to drop Maria off I played disney songs.

I’ll Make A Man Out Of You from Mulan played, and welllllll…

“Let’s get down to business! To defeat, the HUNS! HA!” Maria sang along with hand motions. “Did they send me daughters? When I asked! For sonnnnns!” she continued.

I wanted to drop everything and record this moment. But, I sadly couldn’t because I was driving. This was honestly both funny and cute. Every disney song that I played, she knew.

“You and these disney songs,” I chuckled.

“Disney was my childhood!” she replied enthusiastically.

After I had dropped her off, I drove away. Of course, look at me stating the obvious.. let’s just skip to the following day, I was talking with Kyle.

“You’re right, it was really funny and cute.” I replied chuckling a bit.

“I told you. All she ever watched as a kid was disney movies, all the songs in her head is all disney music.” Kyle replied.

“She’s like a kid at heart, I love that.” I replied with a smile just thinking about her.

“Wow, you almost sound in love.” he replied.

“I am,” I replied now realizing what I said and got flustered. “I—” I was cut off by him speaking.

“No need to hide the fact you like her from me, or love maybe. Rose already told me.” he replied.

“I did not expect that from Rose,” I replied.

“I asked her who liked her, and she was a bit secretive at first but when I told her why I was asking, she told me.” he replied shrugging.

“Why did you ask?” I questioned.

“Whoever likes her, I wanna make sure the guy’s good to her.” he replied. “She’s been my friend since childhood. I wanna see her happy,” he added pushing his lips together.

“Oh. I wanna see her happy too,” I replied.

“Did she date anyone here? Anyone I’m not fully aware of?” he asked.

“Yeah, this guy named Jason. They broke up though.” I replied.

“I’ll be sure to ask her about him,” he replied. “But anyways. Have you told her how you felt yet?” he questioned.

“Not yet, I can never get the timing right.” I replied sighing softly.

“There’s never a right timing, you just have to go right for it when you have the chance.” he replied. “But, I guess I can help you tell her how you feel. Only because I trust that you’ll be good to her.” he added.

“Huh? You trust me after knowing me for a day? That’s weird.” I replied.

“You were protective of her back at the archery, not letting that guy instructor lay his hands on her.” he replied. “I’ll help you, only if you’ll let me. And trust me, you do need the help.” he laughed.

“I mean, I guess.” I replied chuckling a bit.

“Alright, this weekend. You’re gonna tell her how you feel.” he replied.

“Okay, and?” I replied.

“That’s it, nothing more or less to it.” Kyle laughed. “You’re just being a wimp, and how I’m gonna help is by doing this. Tell her how you feel or else someone else will come along and tell her for you. Aka, me. Plus, it’s better to hear it from the person themselves.” he added.

“I’m just not telling her because I don’t want it to be awkward between us if she doesn’t feel the same way.” I replied.

“And how do you know she doesn’t?” he questioned. “Exactly. So, I’m giving you two choices. You tell her yourself or I do.”
