Chapter 61

HUNTER’S POV:

When it was Maria & Beck’s turn to do the 7 minutes in Heaven, I was pretty nervous about it. I trust Maria, but Beck? Definitely not.

“What do you think they’re doing in there?” Cole questioned everyone while watching the time pass by.

“I think Maria’s just standing there, being a loyal to Hunter.” Jack answered.

“Of course.” Cole responded before checking the time again. “Their time is almost up, time to count it down!” he added enthusiastically.

“Eh,” Jack replied.

“Come on! 16! 17!” Cole started counting waiting for everyone to join in. “You guys are boring!” he whined continuing to count down without us.

When time was up, Cole opened the door and all we saw was Beck pushing Maria against the closet wall. Beck didn’t try anything, did he? We made it in time before he could do anything, right?

“Beck! What the hell are you doing?!” Rose exclaimed angrily walking over to Maria and pulling her away while she stood there silently.

“Oh, nothing really. I was just enjoying my time with Maria.” Beck replied.

I looked at Maria who seemed uncomfortable, so I walked over to her and put an arm around her protectively before shooting a glare at him.

“What did you do to her?” I asked coldly.

“If I recall, I wasn’t the only one there.” Beck responded with a small smirk.

“I’ll talk with you later, right now I’m gonna take care of this guy.” I said to Maria before walking over to Beck. “I got a bone to pick with you,” I stated looking at Beck.

“If that’s what you think.” Beck shrugged as he looked away.

“It’s not what I think, it’s what I know. Maria clearly looks uncomfortable after being with you in there.” I stated with my arms crossed. “So, I’ll ask you again, what did you do to her?” I questioned, trying to remain calm.

“I didn’t do anything that you should make a big deal about.” Beck responded.

I chuckled, considering I wasn’t getting a straight answer. So I pushed him harshly towards the wall as I kept him there while I clenched my fist.

“Avoid giving me a straight answer again.” I replied giving him an annoyed look.

“Are you mad?” he questioned, nothing but amusement displayed on his face.

“Of course I am! You did something to my girlfriend, and you’re not answering!” I yelled at him angrily in front of everyone.

“Hunter, maybe you should calm down before someone gets hurt.” Rose commented.

“It’s okay, lil sis. This guy can’t do much to me anyway.” Beck laughed softly.

“You fucking piece of--” I was about to throw a punch at him, but immediately stopped when I felt a warm hand wrapped around my wrist, I looked back only to see Maria looking down at the ground. “Maria?” I said, the tone of my voice softening as I looked at her.

“I don’t like violence when it’s not needed.” Maria answered in a soft tone.

“When it’s not-- it looks needed to me. Clearly, this asshole did something to you and that’s why you look uncomfortable.” I replied.

“Can you take me home now? I’m tired.” Maria responded calmly, avoiding eye contact.

“Yeah,” I answered. “I’m gonna drop Maria off. And when I get back home, I expect everyone to be gone except Jack.” I said to the others.

“I’ll make sure everyone’s out by the time you get back,” Jack said as everyone else remained silent while we walked towards the front door.

I looked back, only to see Beck smirking at me before speaking.

“Bye! I look forward to breaking your composure again, Hunter.” Beck commented.

“And I look forward to kicking your ass next time.” I retorted.

I was serious about that by the way, the next time I see him when I’m not with Maria.. I’ll kick his ass. I would’ve done it today, but she didn’t want me too.

By the time we were in the car, we were both dead silent. Not liking the silence and curiosity at all, I cleared my throat before speaking.

“If you don’t mind me asking, what exactly did uh, Beck do in that closet?” I questioned. “You don’t have to answer, just know I’m asking so I can comprehend the situation.” I added.

She stayed silent for at least 10 minutes before answering quietly with, “He kissed me..” at that moment I felt my nerves tense up and gripped the steering wheel a little bit harder then I should have.

“He kissed you.. and I couldn’t kick his ass for it?” I questioned in a upset tone. “Why do you defend him?” I asked.

“I’m not defending him, I just don’t like violence, that’s all.” Maria replies.

“Did you feel something when he kissed you? Is that why you didn’t want--” she cut me off.

“No, I did not feel anything. I told you, I keep telling you, I just don’t like violence.” she said her voice still soft as ever.

I just remained silent, not knowing what to say. By the time we made it the house, she just left and headed inside. No kisses whatsoever, she just went inside. And I waited for her to go inside before driving away.

When I made it inside my house, I received a call from an unknown number, but I answered it anyway.

“Hey~!” a familiar voice greeted cheerfully.

“Kari, what do you want?” I asked annoyed.

“Well damn, I just wanted to say hi. What’re you so annoyed about?” she questioned.

“One, you’re calling me. Two, it’s not exactly my best day.” I responded.

“Not your best day, huh? Wanna talk about it?” Kari asked in a child-like tone.

“Nope.” I simply replied, before she started whining.

“Aww, come on. I bet you want too.” she responded.

“No. My business is my business, goodbye.” I replied before hanging up on her and heading upstairs to my room to just lay down.

Honestly, all I was thinking while laying down was that I’m gonna kick his ass the next time I see him. Who did this guy think he was?

// N e x t D a y \\

I was hanging out with Cole & Jack at my house just playing video games.

“I think Beck just wanted you to get heated up.” Jack commented. “You know, like maybe bring out that dangerous side of you in front of Maria.” he added shrugging.

“That’s a possibility. Cause if you did kick his ass in front of Maria, she probably would’ve been scared of you.” Cole joined in.

“And that’s probably what he wanted, huh?” I questioned while staring at the tv screen.

“Probably, probably not. You never know a person’s true intentions after all.” Jack replies.

“Did Maria ever tell you what he did?” Cole asked.

“Damn bastard kissed my girl.” I replied pressing buttons on the controller harshly and randomly, as if I forgot the controls.

“If you keep playing like that, our team is gonna lose.” Jack responded.

“Like hell we’re gonna lose.” I retorted.

“So this is what Hunter’s like when he’s protective over a girl.” Cole sighed softly.

“She’s not just a girl, she’s my girlfriend! It’s only natural to be protective whenever it comes to her.” I yelled at first annoyed before lowering my voice and sighing.

“It’s not like she’s gonna swoon over another guy so easily.” Cole replied.

“I’m more worried about other guys being all over her whenever I’m not around.” I sighed. “Beck is an example.” I added.

“You’re not gonna be very far from her when we graduate anyway.” Jack joined in.

I doubt that, very much.. she’s going to NY for college. She’ll be out of reach. But they don’t know that yet. Anyways, as usual we were playing COD. We won by the way.

“I’m gonna go talk with Maria, feel free to play whatever you guys want.” I said before stepping off to the side and calling Maria.

“Hello?” she answered tiredly, as if she had just now woken up.

“Sorry, did I wake you?” I questioned.

“No, I was actually about to get out of bed.” she replied tiredly yawning.

“You wanna go out and get some breakfast?” I questioned.

“Can we go too!” Cole yelled out which caused Maria to laugh softly.

“Sure, why don’t we invite the rest of our friends as well? I think it’d be great.” she responded.

“Alright, I’ll let em know. I’ll get you in 20 minutes.” I replied.

“Mhm, I’ll be ready by then.” she replied. “I’ll see you later.” she added before hanging up.

“Jack, invite Rose out to breakfast with us.” I said practically demanding him.

“You don’t have to tell me twice, I already told her. I’m picking her up in 20 minutes along with Cole.” Jack replied.

“Well, I guess it’s all settled then.” I laughed.

20 minutes later...

15 minutes ahead I got dressed, I just wore casual clothes since we were just going to Denny’s for breakfast. Plus, it was just 5 friends practically hanging out having breakfast together. After it was around 10:45am I called Maria.

“Are you dressed?” I asked as soon as she answered the phone.

“Yeah, you come and get me now.” she replied.

“Alright, I’m on the way.” I replied before hanging up and grabbing my keys as I headed to my car that was parked out front.

After a short drive to her house, I texted her I was here and she got out immediately walking over to the passenger’s seat. When she was inside, she seemed pretty happy.

“You look so excited.” I commented watching her shake in her seat happily.

“Well, it’s my first time going out to breakfast with a group of friends.” she responded now looking at me with a smile.

“You’ve gone out with us before, remember?” I questioned chuckling softly at how cute her excitement was.

“I know, but that time was with different people. This time is with Rose and Jack as a couple. It’s like a double date!” she replies.

“You’re excited for Rose?” I questioned with a half smile.

“Mhm! Let’s get going now, the others are probably there waiting already.” she replied.

“Okay, okay. I’m driving.” I chuckled as I started the car and headed to Denny’s with Maria, and she was right, they were waiting for us out front.

“Double date!” Maria said happily running over to Rose excitedly.

“It could’ve been a triple date if Cole had a girlfriend.” I commented.

“We might have one, if Cole ever finds love.” Jack joins in dramatically.

“Oh, shut up guys. I’m perfectly fine being single, no strings attached whatsoever.” Cole replied to our commentary.

“That sounds very sad and lonely.” Rose replied, joining in as well as Maria just watched the whole conversation laughing.

Eventually, we went in and ordered our food. I just got a stack of pancakes with bananas and such as did the others. Except Maria, she got the ones with strawberries.. her and her strawberries.. oh yeah, did I mention the person that took our order was a waitress?

“So, Cole, what did you think?” Jack asked.

“Of what?” Cole answered in the form of a question.

“The waitress, she seemed like she was eyeing you. Probably has an interest in you.” I replied.

“She was cute looking, but I’m just not really into relationships.” Cole responded.

“Aw, come on. She was cute, at least give dating a try.” Maria joined in.

“Ya know, you guys are probably just imagining that waitress liking me.” Cole retorted before crossing his arms.

“Pretty sure it’s not our imagination.” Rose joined in as well.

When the waitress came back with the drinks everyone remained quiet.

“Here are your drinks,” the waitress said with a small smile placing the drinks down carefully one by one, all of us saying our thanks.

Once she was done putting the drinks down, when she was about to walk away she glanced over at Cole with a bigger smile.

When she was officially out of sight---

“We saw that.” Maria said.

“See? It wasn’t our imagination.” Jack replied.

“Saw what? I didn’t see anything.” Cole responded looking away from us.

“Oh, stop lying. We know you saw her glance back at you with a smile before she left.” Rose replied.

“Don’t forget to give her your number before we leave, ’kay Cole?” I laughed.

“You guys are annoying,” Cole groaned before looking back at us. “I keep telling you guys, I’m fine going solo.” he added.

“For now.” Jack replied.

“Whatever floats your boat.” Cole shrugged.

After talking about Cole and the waitress, eventually she came back to serve our food.

“If there’s anything you guys need, feel free to let me know.” the waitress said with a smile.

“My friend over here thinks you’re cute,” Maria said pointing at Cole. “What do you think about him?” she questioned.

“I-I mean, he’s okay looking.” the waitress responded a bit flustered. “I mean, not o-okay looking.. he’s totally gorgeous but I--” she paused looking down. “I’m gonna go, I’ll drop by later to see if you guys need anything.” the waitress finished before walking off flustered.

“Good job Maria, I didn’t know you had it in you to ask.” Jack said.

“Was making her flustered really necessary?” Cole questioned.

“What? We just wanted to know if she felt the same towards you.” she replied.

“Clearly, she likes you. What’re you gonna do about it?” Rose questioned.

“Nothing.” Cole replied. “As I’ve said before, I’m happy being single.” he added.

“Let’s just all leave Cole be for now, it’s all up to him what he wants to do.” I replied cutting my pancake and taking a bite from it.

“Thank you Hunter.” Cole replied before eating as well, as did everyone else.

After we all had finished eating, we just started talking about the most random topics and the atmosphere was a nice one full of laughs and such. We still kinda talked about Cole and the waitress getting together, but not for long.

“Since we’re all here, I need to tell you guys something beforehand.” Maria announced as we all looked at her.

“What’s up?” Rose questioned with a smile.

“I just want to let you guys know ahead of time that.. that.. I had fun with all of you.” Maria replied with a smile.

Everyone admitted that they had fun as well, it was in the morning and our group was just lively. But soon, we paid for the meals and headed home. When Maria and I were back inside the car, I started driving her home.

“That’s not what you really wanted to say, huh?” I questioned glancing over at her before quickly looking back down the road.

“No, no at all..” she replied. “I really did have fun, but that’s not what I wanted to say, I wanted to tell them about me going to New York for college, but I just couldn’t.” she added.

“Why not?” I asked.

“Because, everyone was so happy. I didn’t want the atmosphere around us to die down when I bring up the college I’m going to.” she responded in a sad tone.

“Graduation is coming sooner than you expect it to, how’re you gonna tell them you’re leaving?” I questioned.

“I don’t know.. I’ll have to think about it.” she simply replied.
