The guy behind us left as soon as Sarah gave him the middle finger from behind. When he was nowhere in sight, I shoved Sarah away. Hard. So hard that she stumbled and fell on the ground.
“What the hell was that?” I asked while my fingers touching her my now swollen lips. I looked at her while my eyes still held confusion and shock from what happened. My breathing was still uneven as if I had just run a marathon. It was not surprising how shock I was.
“I was protecting you geez,” she said while rubbing her butt. “Look it’s nothing. I’m druuunk~” I notice that she became much weaker because of the alcohol inside her body and soon Sarah passed out on the floor.
Groaning, I dragged her out of the doorway and took her into my car. This girl was trouble and I was not liking it one bit. I looked through her pockets and found her cellular phone. I didn’t want to feel like invading her privacy on her phone but I had to call someone. Scrolling through her contacts, I found Sabrina’s name on the list.
I debated whether to call her or not but soon decided that I would. The phone rang but no one responded so I tried again.
This time, she picked up on the third ring “Why the fuck are you calling me when you’re one room away?!” Her voice held annoyance.
I rolled my eyes but answered “Look it’s Carly. Sarah’s with me”
“WHAT?!” Then I heard a few shuffling and a door slamming.
“How in the world did she get there?” I heard her murmur. “Fuck, I’m going to get in trouble if she doesn’t get here by morning. Where are you?”
“I’m at a friend’s house,” I said.
“A party?” The sound of keys and the car turning on caught my attention.
“Okay. What’s the address?”
“I’ll just talk to you because Sarah is near vomiting” Right away, I ended the phone and grabbed a plastic from the bottom of my driver’s seat and placed it next to Sarah’s mouth. God, she was making the ‘about-to-puke’ sound.
After fifteen minutes, Sabrina’s car pulled up. She looked like she just woke up and her eyes showed that she was tired. Not even a single makeup on, which was a bit different for me. Studying her facial features, I’ve noticed how Sabrina had changed. Her light blond hair had turned into much of a darker colour, making it more look like gold. Her eyelashes were naturally long and you will be fooled thinking as if she had mascara on.
“Where is she?” she asks, rushing towards me.
I opened the door and motioned towards her drunk cousin. “She had way too many drinks”
“Shit.” she slapped Sarah’s legs attempting to wake her up but to no avail, the girl just kept snoring. “Ugh, help me get her out”
Together, we began to pull out Sarah. She was heavy and it didn’t help the fact that she’s passed out. It took us nearly 15 minutes to transfer her into Sabrina’s black Range Rover Autobiography.
Once we got Sarah sleeping comfortable on the back, I quickly got off and went over to my car, which was pretty much nothing compared to Sabrina’s. My Honda Civic was just a regular, nothing fancy and expensive
“Thank you for taking care of Sarah,” Sabrina said, leaning over the side skirt of the front hood.
“It’s no problem.“I inserted the keys in the ignition and started the car.
“Goodnight Carly” she waved goodbye and simply waved before walking away to hers.
Sighing, I signaled to the right and left the parking lot.
The next day, I woke up early to go scold my dear cousin.
“Get up punk!” I said, grabbing the comforters away from her. Sarah groaned then mumbled a few gibberish, something about having a headache. Rolling my eyes, I jumped on top of her and started pulling the pillows in which she held to blocked all of the noises that I was making.
“Giddy up Sarah!”
“You know you are so dead to mom and dad, sneaking out to party at night.”
She then popped her head out of the pillow and looked at me “Staying at this house was making me insane. I’d rather not go mental and start breaking your oh so wonderful trophies and other valuable things in this house.”
Trophies? What was she talking about “You wouldn’t do that”
“Trust me I would’ve brought the party here instead.”
Getting off, I walked to the nearby closet and started picking out my school outfit. “Well you should thank Carly for taking care of you”
I turned my head and looked at her. “Well yeah, she called me yesterday. Don’t you remember? You passed”
Sarah looked confused. She was so easy to read. The way wrinkles would appear on her forehead and the confused movements of her eyebrows. After a while, she then let out a loud groan.
“What you remember now?” I asked, now walking over to the mirror and looking to see if the outfits would look good on me. Turns they were too punky so I threw over Sarah’s bed.
“You know what, you wear that,” I said.
“What?” I asked.
“I kissed her”
My eyes widen after. I then looked at her confused “You kissed her?”
“Well I was drunk and this dude was feeling her up, or at least getting on her nerves”
“Wow, not only do you kiss Jessica but also Carly. I guess it’s now scientifically proven that skills can be passed on through genes” I said, chuckling.
“No, and Jessica is not the same. She’s...” Sarah hesitated for a while and then sighed “Different.”
She looked at me and then shrugged.
“I don’t want to think about it. It’s too early for girl problems”
“Guess we think the same” I smirked. “Now get up, we’re going to be late for school and my parents don’t want to see us here by 9”
“Whatever. You’re weird”
Chuckling, I left her room and went to prepare for another day at school.
I arrived early at school today, knowing that Jessica would be there waiting. These past days, I’ve been helping her catch up with some of the assignments she missed and surprisingly she caught up fast. Today we were going to review about Glycolysis and Monosaccharide Metabolism for Biology.
“Hey you’re early,” I said as I approached Jessica who has already had her face focused on the textbook.
She gently turns the page over and then looks up at me “Hi”
“So, what are you reading about?”
“Synthesis and reactions of acetals and hemiacetals.”
“Oh. Okay. You need any help?” I asked
She thought for a second and then shook her head “I’m good. Thanks”
“Do you want some? I stopped by McDonald’s” I said, moving the bag of hashbrowns in front of her. I saw her looking...eyeing the hashbrowns. Oh, she must really still like it.
“Go on” I smiled.
“T-thanks”. She hesitantly takes one and then starts eating it slowly.
I’ve been trying to get Jessica to talk more and open up to me, and I’m guessing small gestures like this helps. I smiled at a thought that came into my head. I stood up from my sit and then sat next to hers.
“Hey, can you explain this to me?” I said pointing towards a picture in the textbook in which I really knew of already.
“Oh, forming hemiacetals and acetals. That should be easy” she said. I scooted in closer so that my arms were touching hers and I felt that she tensed up but continued explaining anyway. I giggled inside.
God, did she had perfume?
She smells good...
“This is glucose... ” she then starts explaining things that I can never understand.
I wasn’t even paying attention, I just kept nodding and looking at her face every other time and then.
“Did you get it?” she asks all of a sudden.
“The one that I explained. By the way, in order for a hemiacetal to reach full acetal-hood, it must be subjected to treatment with acid to undergo further reaction. Just as it says in the textbook.”
“Hmm... I see thanks” I grinned.
She just nods and continues to study. I never went back to my seat afterward.
Thank god school was over. I had two biology test and one chemistry finished. Another project was assigned and it has to be done by tomorrow. I waited for Nathaniel to come out of his class. I was told to go with him when going home since Dennis couldn’t pick me up. Apparently, he had to go overtime to meet up with his work schedule.
I jumped letting out a loud squeak.
“Oops. Yo” Nat laughed but apologized afterward.
“We have an emergency practice today, I hope you don’t mind waiting. The coach is strict on this week because we have out finals on the weekend” he says.
“Sure,” I answered.
When we arrived at the gym, I saw Jace and John. They came over and said hi before going to practice. I watched from the upper seats. It wasn’t fun to watch especially you’re not the one playing. Surprisingly, their team was good but they just lacked team coordination. Jace and John were good pairs. Nat was excellent and shooting. But the rest of their team.... just really sucked.
One was an aggressive player, always hogging the ball. I hated those kinds of people. Always thinking as if they were the best in the team. Such attention seeker. Their coach was really strict just as Nat says. They made the boys run without getting a break. Their practice lasted for an hour and a half.
When it was time to leave, I saw the cheerleaders walk in. Kristina waved to us and told to wait because she just needed to change. Angela was there too.
But of course, who else was there?
And she never failed to make me blush again.
“Hey cutie” she smirked. “Didn’t know you were into basketball.”
“Oh... so you were into the boys?” her eyebrows rising and her eyes looking quite... scary.
“Jessica, we’re going!” Nat called.
“I’ll see ya Jessica” Sabrina smiled.
I smiled back and then walked towards Nat, Jace, and John.
“Please don’t tell me your friends with her” John said.
I didn’t reply. Was I friends with Sabrina? That can’t be. We just talked.
“I’m telling you, Jessica. Sabrina is not a person you’d want to be friends with. Nathaniel, tell your sister that” he said.
Nat just shrugged and then laughed.
Sabrina wasn’t that bad, right?
With Sarah out of the picture, I was able to tease and hang with Jessica once in a while. But that doesn’t mean I saw how Jessica or Carly reach out to Sarah once. It made me feel somewhat angry and sad because the two girls whom I have liked have both have their attention on the same person, on someone else.
Today, I had invited Jessica to come eat lunch with me. It was the second time this week that I had her ask out to accompany me during lunchtime. Of course, John was always there to interfere but I’ve managed to sneak Jessica out sometimes.
It was weird. To know the person that I’ve become since Jessica came. One of my friends thinks so. She told me I wasn’t looking for a victim anymore. That I wasn’t having quickies or am I getting late on my classes, well the classes where I have Jessica with.
Smiling, we stopped by a newly opened cafe shop. Surprisingly, most of the customers were students from the school as well. I guess, they picked a right place to do business.
I took hold of Jessica’s hand without permission and cut through the long line of students, earning a few weird looks and glares from other students. I knew someone who worked on the cafe so it was no problem for me.
“Hey, Mark!” I called out to the black-haired boy who was doing cash. He looked up at me and his eyes suddenly moved to Jessica’s. Immediately, he looked embarrassed.
“Um what can I get you?” he asked me. A customer from behind whom we had cut through coughed obnoxiously, which made us turned around to face them.
“I think we were here first,” The woman said before crossing her arms and looking at us. The old man with her didn’t care. He just kept looking at the screen, debating what to order.
Before I could open my mouth and bitch on the woman, Jessica had step up and said something.
“I’m sorry, we’ll uh... move back,” she said, smiling shyly before tugging me on the arm and taking us to an empty table.
Too shock to what actually do, I just started at her after we sat down, my face resting beneath my two hands while smiling foolishly.
“W-what?” she asked, now looking uncomfortable.
“Nothing” I grinned. I love making Jessica nervous. She’d always blush and try avoiding my eyes, which she really can’t. Because most of the times, I’d catch her looking at me. It’s like she’s trying to read me, or maybe she’s just curious.
“What?” now it was my turn to ask that, cause I caught her looking at me - longer than usual.
“Um, nothing. It’s just that I notice that you were kinda spacing out. Is there anything you want? I’ll go in line and tell Mark” she said.
I shook my head no and chuckled “Why did you even pull us out of the line? I mean, who cares about the lady. Clearly, Mark knows us so he should just serve us. Duh!” I said.
“No. I think it’s rude,” she said. And just like that, I felt like I had just been scolded by my mother.
Pouting, I grabbed hold of Jessica’s hand on the table and apologized “I’m sorry I’m a rude bitch”
Well, that didn’t turn out cute at all. Pft. Ain’t got no time to be cute
She laughed a bit after pulling her hands out which left me wanting more of her warm hands. “Yeah you are”
“Oh. I see how it is. Well, I think you’re being mean.” I said then pointed directly at myself “to me specifically.”
“I think you’re mean to that lady” she pointed out.
“I think she needs to excuse her shit and get over with it”
“Um... well I think you need to start being nice to people?” she said, or more asked.
“No, you’re not.”
“Yeah, I am nice! To you. I mean, I did ask you out for lunch right?” I smiled.
“Um... yeah I guess.”
“Mhm, so you should feel special cause I never give my attention to anyone. I’m very picky Jessica. I tend to choose the cute ones only” I said, then added a wink after.
She blushed after and then excused herself immediately. “I-I’m going.. to uh... get food”
“It’s supposed me to be getting food for us cause I asked you out for lunch” I chuckled while getting my wallet from my bag.
“Here, I’ll come with you.”
Together we walked towards back Mike, but this time Jessica was a bit farther than before so I grabbed her by the shoulder and grinned when she looked at me confusedly. She was so short. It’s too cute. “Hey, Mark. I don’t really know what to get since it’s my first time here so get us your special or whatever is good” I said, then took out a hundred dollar bill and giving it to him.
“Uh okay. Um... are you two like going out... together?” he asked.
I raised an eyebrow, confused and stunned by what he asked and why.
“Not really butting in or anything with our business or whatever you two are. Ugh, I’m going to shut up. It’s just that we have a promo and special lunch for couples. I’m not sure” he said, awkwardly laughing while scratching his hair.
“Of course we’d love to take that” I almost shouted, and at the same time grabbing Jessica’s waist which really freaked her out cause she almost pushed me off.
That’s when I noticed and remembered something. She looked at me and I already knew she knew what I knew.
“Well I’ll have it bring it to your table Sabrina,” Mark said absently.
“I’m sorry” Jessica and I said at the same time.
“No, it’s my fault. I completely forgot. I’m really sorry” I laughed nervously while raking my hair with my fingers. “It’s just that um... nevermind I’m sorry Jessica. I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“No. Um. It was my fault. I’m sorry. I’m not used to people touching me or anything” she said while biting her lip and quickly looking away.
“Sorry.” After a few silence, I decided to break the tension. “Come one, I’m hungry”
When we got back to our table, Jessica started ramming her apology.
“I’m really sorry about earlier. I didn’t mean to freak out or anything”
“Stop saying sorry Jessica. I should apologie. I forgot about it”
“No, it’s just um... I really do-”
“Hey! Hey! Stop. Okay? You’re no at fault Jessica. Remember that. Whatever you did, or whatever happened, it’s never your fault. ” I said seriously while staring straightly into her eyes just to show how serious I was.
She looked down at her empty plate and that’s when I noticed her eyes starting to look glassy. At this I panicked and just held her hand, to let her know I was here for whatever, whenever, and wherever.
After having lunch with Sabrina, we both went back to school together and separated ways. There was something I learned about Sabrina today after having lunch with her. She’s a unique intriguing person. People will mostly think she’s a bitch for being loud, cocky, and selfish. But she wasn’t that kind. When I nearly had a breakdown, she helped me calm down. I learned that she wasn’t good when people crying. I nearly laughed when she started telling all of the stories where she had attempted to shush a crying baby, but in the end, the baby ended up crying even louder.
And what’s more surprising and exciting was that Sabrina had given me her number. Yes, we exchanged numbers because earlier she said that “If you need anyone, call me, text me. I’m 24/7 free”. And I thought it was cute of her to do that. I just don’t get why people think of her differently. I did try looking for anything bad about her. But I’m terrible at gossiping and I hate butting into other people’s life. So I ended up giving up.
“I mean she’s really nice” I mumbled.
“So are you like attracted to her?” Emmie asked through skype.
“No!” I said immediately, surprised by her question.
“Ayeeeee oh my god my little Jessica is growing. I’m so proud of you babe. You now literally have your first crush since you were born.” Emmie started swaying her hands up while making a good job sign.
“Oh, you better tell me about this woman. Umf, I never even thought you were gay Jessica”
“I’m not. I don’t think so. I don’t know. I don’t like people” I said while continuing to finish up my homework paper.
“Jessica you are turning 17 soon. You’re a goddamn teenager. Please have someone love you other than me.” she said dramatically.
“Aw, you don’t love me anymore so you want me to end up with someone else?” I faked awed.
“No Jessica. I love you bestie but someone else will give you more than that. Enough to turn you into a squealing cheerleader” she laughed. “Anyway, do you have like a picture or something. I want to see how she looks like”
“You’re just going to judge by the face? Em, remember you don’t judge a book by its cover” I said in a matter of fact.
“Psh, I bet you do that you cray cray” she said. “By the way, can I come over and spend Christmas with you? Maybe? My parents are going to visit my grandparents and I don’t want to go there.”
“Sure. I don’t think my dad would mind. Plus I need company.” I said.
“Um... It’s my family’s first Christmas get together for the first time? I mean since I’m here, Kristina says it might be a big party.”
“Great! I’ll come over. A month or two from now. Anything you want me to bring in particular?”
“Rona!” I squealed after seeing my puppy on the video call with Emmie.
“Aw, my puppy” I touched the screen as if caressing my puppy’s fur. “So cute. I miss him”
“Haha too bad I can’t bring him Jessica,” she said. I saw pickup Rona and playing with him.
“Rona betrayed me! Nooo” I said when Rona started playing along “I hate you Em.”
She laughed and stuck her tongue out “Well go finish up your homework since you’re a good girl”
“Alright. Goodnight Em.”
It was after school the next day when Carly had unexpectedly stopped me.
“Um I need to speak to you privately,” she said as if she was in a hurry. Before I could reply, she was already pulling me away and we entered an abandoned isolated area somewhere in the school.
“Are you close to Sarah?” she asked.
“Um... not much. I don’t think”
“She’s changed, Jessica and I think... I don’t know actually. I don’t know what to do with her anymore.”
Curious, I asked, “Where is she?”
“She left already, went off”
“Oh I see”
“I’m sorry for just dragging you here. I’m just really worried about her cause I’ve seen how she acts when she’s going through shit”
“I’m really sorry, I can’t be much of a help.”
“It’s no biggie. I do think it’ll be nice if we can get away to distract her. You know” she said, then she shifted a bit closer. Our fingertips lightly touching.
“Sarah is a good person Jessica.”
“I know,” I said nodding.
“She’s pretty much alike to Sabrina. But at the same they’re both different,” she said.
She shook her head. “I don’t really know.”
Silence filled in between us and soon before I could stop myself I asked “What happened between the two of you? with... Sabrina?”
She turned her head and looked at me. I felt my heartbeat starting to speed up by how serious she was looking at me.
“It doesn’t matter anymore Jessica”
“Because I’m going to confess that I have feelings for you.”
“You’re kidding me,” she said while placing a hand on her hip. “That’s not fair. That thing is hard”
“Oh, I didn’t know you guys were here.” a voice startled us. Slowly turning our head, the mysterious girl smirked at us. Suspiciously, Sabrina wasn’t with her anymore.
“Long time no see Carls.”
