Chapter 19: Gigi

And when I wake up tomorrow I’ll bet,

That you and I will walk together again,

I can tell that we are gonna be friends,

Yes, I can tell that we are gonna be friends.

--We’re Going to be Friends, The White Stripes

It had been a few weeks since Elisabeth and Daniel started doing…whatever it was that they were doing. Dating, seeing each other, talking? I had no idea. Maybe I was just afraid of what I didn’t understand, or of her becoming a vampire and living forever, or whatever. All that really mattered was that Elisabeth was happy, and the weirdo seemed happy too, but he doesn’t matter as much as Elisa.

I stretched my calves and quads, preparing for track practice. Our first meet was coming up this weekend and I was the anchor for one of the relays. I can’t believe we’re already halfway through March. I thought to myself. Elisabeth came jogging up to me with a smile, her auburn hair in a ponytail bouncing behind her. I glanced up and noticed Weirdo standing outside of the track area, watching her like a hawk. He did that a lot, I don’t think Elisabeth noticed it as much as I did. He could be rather overprotective.

“Hey, Gigi!” Elisa greeted me happily. She came over next to me and started stretching her legs as well. She was a great short distance sprinter, one of the best on our team.

“I see you have an entourage today,” I teased her. She blushed and glanced up over to Daniel, he waved to her and smiled. I had to mentally stop myself from rolling my eyes.

“Yeah, he said he wanted to see what sort of exercises we did at track practice. I guess being homeschooled at home in Romania he doesn’t get the same experiences as we do.” I stood and stretched up onto my tiptoes, reaching my arms into the air for a full body stretch. Man, that felt good.

“Oh!” I had just remembered, Elisa’s birthday was this weekend too! “What do you want for your birthday?” I asked her. At the mention of her birthday she visibly stilled, as if she didn’t want to talk about it.

“Oh, I don’t know. You know what kinds of things I like, Gigi.” She said halfheartedly.

“Alright, what’s wrong?” I crossed my arms across my chest and gave her that look. You know, the look that says I know that she’s hiding something. She stood from her stretch and faced me with an apologetic expression.

“Well, even though Daniel says I don’t have to worry about the betrothal I still do. And we were supposed to be married shortly after I turned 18.” She whispered. “I think I love Daniel,” she said with a sigh. “but I’m definitely not ready to get married.” My eyes went wide and I raised my eye brows at her. This was the first I was hearing of her loving him, I thought it was still just a crush. I glanced over to where Weirdo was standing and he had an expression of surprise on his face as well. Could he hear us from all the way over there? No wonder she was whispering.

“Can he hear us?” I whispered to her.

“Most likely. Apparently vampires have exceptional hearing, they can do everything better than humans can. He puts my sprinting to shame.” I wanted to talk with her more about it, but our coach was calling for practice to start so I would have to wait until after.

“How was school today, Gigi?” Mom asked as we ate dinner. She had made cheeseburgers and mac and cheese, one of my favorites. It was just Mom and I, my Dad had walked out on us when I was only 7, she still wasn’t over it.

“It was okay, nothing exciting happened.” I responded. After dinner I trudged back to my room and started on my homework for tomorrow. It really bothered me that Weirdo and Elisabeth were together, I guess, now. I had told her I would support her decision no matter what, but sometimes it was hard. It’s hard to be okay with something when it involves your best friend possibly moving to Romania and becoming a vampire. But I couldn’t tell her I felt this way, I didn’t want her to feel like she had to choose between Daniel and me.

My phone vibrated in my pocket, it was Kevin. My lips curled up into a smile.

Hey babe. How was practice?

It was okay. I texted back. Our meet was in two days but I still felt like I wasn’t prepared. Then again, I always felt like that at our first meet.

I love you, G. I sighed, I was so lucky to have him, he really helped hold me together sometimes.

I love you too. <3

I jumped back into my homework so I could finish it in time for Kev and I to play Overwatch together. It was sort of our thing, we did it almost every night.

At around 9:30 I heard my laptop ping signifying an IM from Elisabeth. I still couldn’t get over the fact that her parents had one of those old plans that only allowed a certain number of texts per month. She was living in 2008 and it really sucked.

Elisabest: Hey, Gigi

*Gigi1340 is Online*

Gigi1340: Hey girl, what’s up?

Elisabest: Studying for the AP Bio exam, you?

Gigi1340: I was playing Overwatch with Kevin and kicking ass. :)

Elisabest: Lol, that’s good.

Gigi1340: Hey, I have some questions for you.

Elisabest: Okay?

Gigi1340: So, what all can Daniel do exactly?

Elisabest: Oh, well he has hearing comparable to a dog’s, he can track scents like a blood hound too. Haha, blood hound, get it?

Gigi1340: I’m trying really hard not to roll my eyes right now. Lol.

Elisabest: Oh, whatever. :P He can run about 45 miles per hour, he’s also really strong and, um, durable as he puts it.

Gigi1340: So, he’s a superhero?

Elisabest: Not sure I’d call a vampire a superhero. Lol.

Elisabest: Anyway, I just wanted to say hi. I’ll let you and Kevin get back to your ass kicking.

Gigi1340: Okay. :) Goodnight, Elisa.

Elisabest: Night Gigi.

Two days later we were all piled into a school bus and on our way to Smithfield High School for our meet. Elisa and I were sharing a bus seat, she seemed nervous. She kept biting at her fingernails and staring out the window, like she was watching for something.

Once we were at Smithfield we followed our coach to the track and started our warmups, stretches and a quick half mile jog to get the blood flowing. Elisabeth’s event was before mine, so I watched her from the bleachers. Her face was set in a determined frown and when she took off from the starting point, she was really booking it. And her determination payed off, she came in 2nd place! Not bad for the first meet of the season. “Way to go Elisa!” I whooped from the stands.

“That’s my girl!” Another voice yelled from nearby. I looked to where it was coming from and saw Weirdo sitting there with a huge grin on his face. He really stuck out like a sore thumb in the crowd. Not only because he was super tall, but also from the way he dressed. Elisabeth shot him a wide smile back and then turned to wave at me too. My race was coming up soon so I had to head back down to the track.

My heart pounded in my ears as I sprinted down the track. With the baton securely in my hand I ran as fast as I could. I tried to picture Kevin standing at the finish line, something to give me incentive to keep pushing myself. This was my first time as the anchor, and the third girl in the relay had tripped on her way to me, putting me behind everyone else. I was trying to make up for her lost time.

Instead of Kevin at the finish line, Elisa was there cheering for me, clapping and jumping up and down.

“Go, Gigi!” She yelled. It was enough for me. I gritted my teeth and pounded down the track somehow managing to come in 1st place. “Yeah, Gigi!” Elisabeth grinned and ran over to me. “Great job! I knew you could do it.” She patted my back and continued to grin. Even Weirdo came over and congratulated me.

“That was some excellent running,” Daniel said with a smile. “Congratulations on first place.” He gave me a thumb’s up before putting his arm around Elisa’s shoulders and bending down to kiss her cheek. “You did a great job too, Elisabeth.” He murmured, she blushed and giggled at his contact. Man, I wish Kevin was here, but he had saxophone lessons after school today. “Well I should get back home for the evening,” Daniel said to Elisabeth. “I will see you tomorrow for your birthday, yes?” Elisabeth nodded and smiled. To give them some privacy I walked over to my gym bag and grabbed my thermos of water, taking a big gulp.

I hoped Elisabeth liked what I made her for her birthday. I made the two of us matching friendship bracelets with both of our favorite colors on it, green and blue for her and yellow and white for me. I had been working on them all week after school and was giving them to her tomorrow when the three of us met at Riker’s mansion.

10:40 PM

Gigi1340: That was some great sprinting today!

Elisabest: You too! Plus you came in 1st place! The coach was thrilled.

Gigi1340: God, I can’t believe it’s our last track season together. It feels like yesterday we were just freshman on the JV team.

Elisabest: I know! I was thinking about that earlier today too. I’m going to miss you next fall when you’re at UV. :(

Gigi1340: You can visit me anytime you want. You should totes spend a couple weekends on campus with me.

Elisabest: Definitely! That would be awesome.

Gigi1340: Hey, out of curiosity, how did Daniel get to and from the meet today.

Elisabest: He, um, he ran there. I told you he can run the speed of a car.

Gigi1340: Damn, so you weren’t kidding. That’s like 20 miles!

Elisabest: I know. >.< We went for a run together once and it was sad how much faster than me he was. I was so out of breath when I caught up to him that he gave me a piggy back ride back to his house. It was like being in a jeep with the doors and the top off. Lol.

Gigi1340: Haha, must have been fun though. Doesn’t his vampire baggage still freak you out..?

Elisabest: Sometimes, but I think I’m getting used to it. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not.

Gigi1340: Well you guys seem happy together, I suppose that’s all that really matters, right?

11:30 PM

Gigi1340: Elisa? Did you fall asleep?

12:00 AM 19/03

Gigi1340: Happy birthday! See you at Daniel’s later.
