Chapter 1

I laid my head back against the pillow as Mage, Stone, Thrasher and 8ball all left the room for the night. I would be here for a few more days before I could go home. Doc says I was hit so close to my heart it’s a wonder that I’m still alive. I closed my eyes thinking over everything that had been happening lately. The club issues, Stone’s girl getting shot, the warehouse and Connor betraying the club for his mother.

It all was just so intense, hell if I’m being honest it got so intense lately that now, laying here getting rest felt so damn wrong. I had watched all of the members of the club for years. I knew them like the back of my hand. I knew them so well that there was no way anything got past me.

But I wanted a life too. I felt as if I had been spending too much time with the guys and not thinking of myself. But that’s the life of the club, lonely but never actually alone. My mind wandered to so many different things at such a fast pace that I hadn’t noticed someone come into the room. Hearing a light knock on the door my eyes snapped up, I looked over to see Medusa standing there with a small smile on her face. Medusa was one of the club’s girls.

She used to be a sweetbutt but for some reason, Thrasher made a way for her to stay at the clubhouse without the pressure of sleeping around unless she wanted to. She mostly stayed with Vikki, Mage’s wife, helping her with anything she needed. I tried to adjust myself when she walked over to the bed reaching for me.

“Slow down. You’ll only hurt yourself worse.” Her voice is so soft and dainty. I just nodded in response.

“I wasn’t expecting any more company for the night.” I looked over to her as she sat down in the two-seater by the door.

“Yeah... I wasn’t expecting to come either. I hope that it is okay that I’m here.” I watched as she fidgeted with her hands like she always did.

“Of course,” I told her before an awkward silence filled the room for a few moments. As I watched her she looked everywhere except in my direction. “Are you okay?” I asked her, making her adjust herself.

“Yeah… I’m good. I just don’t know what to say...” I nodded.

“Well, hospitals usually do keep you speechless,” I joked, making her smile softly as she stared at her hands.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” she said, slipping her slides from her feet and putting her feet up to get comfortable. “So when will you be getting out of here?” We talked all night that night. It was the first night I had actually gotten a chance to speak to her.

I walked down the steps to my front porch with my first-morning smoke in my mouth and my backpack hanging from one of my shoulders. The morning breeze was heavy this morning but the warmth of it made my body content. I threw my leg over my motorcycle, clipping down my bag to the front of my bike. I started up the engine before pulling on my helmet and starting toward the clubhouse.

I rode through Bunbury on my usual route to the clubhouse. The weather had been changing and spring was right around the corner. The warmth of the sun and light breeze blew against my face leaving my body feeling amazing. Watching as shops opened up, people began to pop up more and more throughout the city, going along with their daily routines made my heart fill with joy.

I loved this city and I loved the fact that I could be a part of a club that protects it. The Highway Jokers. Even though many people feared us, we still showed up to charity events doing our part by donating to the homeless shelters and the hospital to raise funds.

When I made it to the clubhouse, I pulled into the compound. I watched as I parked my bike as the ladies of the club were planning decoration plans, and the guys were moving back and forth carrying big crates.

I held the door open for Thrasher and Stone as they carried the last one inside. “What’s all this?” I asked.

“Vikki is redecorating the outside of the clubhouse. Apparently, we need change.” Thrasher rolls his eyes, making me chuckle.

I walked over to the bar before Dihya handed me a coffee and I nodded my head to her. When she walked back into the kitchen, my eyes met with Medusa’s as she stood by the island in the kitchen. She was biting her lip, I winked at her, silently telling her good morning. I caught her soft bright red cheeks before someone called for her.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and sent a text to Medusa as I made my way to the stairs of the basement.

Me: Meet me at the usual spot at 3 ;)

Medusa: See you soon.

I walked down to the basement where some of the guys were, 8ball handed me the clipboard with the list of stuff we had just gotten. I placed my coffee mug and the clipboard down on the counter in the corner. I shrugged off my bag and placed it by my feet before I grabbed the clipboard again. I looked over my shoulder at the crates and then back at the piece of paper in front of me.

I made my way over to the crates, I pulled one of the AK’s out. Looking over the weapon, I frowned when I noticed something odd about it. I checked through all the other crates and they all turned out to be the same. “Shit” I mumbled.

“8ball, who signed off on this?” I asked him when he came back into the room with another crate.

“I did. Why what’s up?” He asked me, I looked towards him.

“Tell Thrasher to call church now,” I said to him, he frowned slightly looking a bit scared before nodding his head and ran up the stairs. I sighed and ran my hand over my face before I placed the lid on the crate and took it upstairs.

“What is this about, brother?” Thrasher asked once he took a seat. Everyone was sitting at the table ready for me to speak as I stood at the end of the table. I cracked open the crate with my knife once again before I grabbed the AK from the crate and threw it across the table. Thrasher caught it with ease before looking at it. “What the fuck?” He growled out when he noticed what I did.

“Fake parts. Meaning the guns are of no use.” I said.

“Who signed off,” he asked me.

“I did” 8ball spoke up from beside his father Mage.

“Did you know?” Thrasher asked him, 8ball shook his head.

“None of the crates were open until I checked them this morning when I came in,” I said to Thrasher.

“Then what the fuck is going on?” Thrasher asked, slamming the weapon on the jarrah table. I took a seat next to him on his left. “Give Bobby a call and see what’s going on.” I nodded my head.

“Take a few guys with you and return that shit before I put a bullet in his head. I want a discount from now on.” Thrasher said as he lit a cigarette.

“Do you really think Bobby would do this to us?” Mage said from across the table. Thrasher stared at him for a moment.

“Whether it was him or not. I don’t know but I’m not risking it.”

“And if it is him?” I asked my president.

“Nobody fucks with The Highway Jokers. Everyone knows that. So if he did this shit purposely then he fucked up and we will handle it.” I nodded once in agreement.

I watched from across the compound as the ladies of the club were measuring the building and laughing. Medusa was in her element. Her smile brought my soul to life alone. I had always thought she was beautiful but I never once made a pass at her. Not even when she was a sweetbutt. She was the reserved girl of the club. She’d come and go then disappear for a few days then be back like nothing ever happened. I always wondered what that was about.

I remember when she first showed up at the club it was a party we threw for Thrasher becoming president a few years back. He was President for a few months before we could celebrate but because of rivalries and shit getting crazy, we didn’t have downtime. She had come in with another one of the sweetbutts we used to have and I had my eyes locked on her since. It was always just something about her.

Back then she was going through so much and it showed but now, looking at her you wouldn’t think she was the same girl that walked through those doors and turned my head. Medusa and I had been seeing each other for a few months now. Mostly just getting to know each other but sometimes ended up in bed together.

I felt Stone pat me on the shoulder to signal that he was ready to go now that the crates were back in the truck. I had to figure out what was going on with our stock. I pulled on my helmet and started my motorcycle before I followed Stone and a few others out of the compound and headed towards the docks.

Pulling off my helmet, I climbed off the bike and made my way towards the office with Stone behind me. “Bobby! You’ve got some explaining to do.” I yelled out as I came through the door. Bobby jumped up from his desk, dropping his food down all over himself.

“Shit… Wh- what are you talking about?” He tried to wipe away the food.

“Our stock has been tampered with,” I said as I watched him sweat. It was disgusting.

“I...I don’t know what you’re talking about…” he rubbed the back of his neck. I sighed and rolled my eyes, pulling out my gun from the back of my jeans. Bobby froze in fear. “Alright, alright. I...I haven’t been able to get any products.”

“Why didn’t you say anything, Bobby? Now Thrasher is threatening to put a bullet in your head, mate.” Stone said with his arms folded across his chest.

“Thrasher wants it all replaced. Discount too.”

“What? No no no. I...I can’t do more discounts. I will be losing money.” He shook his head.

I lifted my arm up and pointed the gun at him, making him freeze once again. “Too bad, Bobby. You’ve fucked us around. Thrasher is looking for blood and you’re at the top of the list.” I said to him.

Bobby sighed and nodded his head “Alright. 50 percent off but the lowest I can do.”

I looked towards Stone as he held his phone to his ear talking to Thrasher. “Thrasher said fine but if you fuck us around again. Your wife will find you dead.” Stone said as he put his phone away. Bobby nodded his head. “Also he wants a new shipment by the end of the week. All real this time.”

“I’ll get right on it,” Bobby said as he reached for his phone. Ordering us a new shipment.

Walking out of the smelly office, I sighed as I put my gun away back in my jeans. I checked my phone and noticed that I was running late to meet up with Medusa. “Shit,” I mumbled. I quickly climbed onto my motorcycle.

“Where are you going?” I heard Stone yell out.

“I gotta be somewhere. I’ll meet you at the clubhouse later” I yelled back before I started my motorcycle and tore out of the shipment yard.
