Blurb

Jane, although not an honor student, moody, has a bad temper and insensitive, is respected by all of her classmates and schoolmates; not only because she excel in debating, but also because of her inborn leadership skills. Everyone thought she doesn't have a match, until she met 'The Mark' of the adversary school. Or does she?

Chapter One: Challenging the Rule

Although I have been hanging out with the Young Debater’s club at our high school since freshman year, today’s the first time that I went to watch them compete against another school. I don’t have anything against it, really. It’s just that, I don’t see the point of watching when I know that our school will bring home the trophy at the end of the day. It seemed meaningless to go and cheer for them.

But after what happened earlier, I think I awe it to Mike to at least watch the final match.

I have long known the feelings that Mike had for me, but I chose to ignore it because I just can’t imagine the two of us…being more than friends. And earlier, just before the team meet at school, when he came to my house looking like he ran a marathon and saying that he had something important to tell me, I just had to gently break this to him. Well, at least I hoped I really did it ‘gently’.

“So…my cousin told me that he went to confess to you earlier…and you rejected him.” Karen said as she sat beside me.

“You were spying on us.” I raised a brow at her.

“Not really. It just so happen that I was passing by your house earlier on my way to school, when I saw him talking to you.”

“But of course.”

Liar.

“Don’t change the topic, Jy-Jy.” She smirked. Tsk.

“I did not reject him, Kar.” I sighed audibly.

“Cutting him off, saying that the girl he’ll fall in love with in the ‘future’ is so lucky, sounds rejection to me.” She grinned at me.

“I’m so sorry, Kar. You knew I tried…it’s just that…”

“I understand, Jy-Jy…I don’t blame you.” She smiled genuinely. “Plus, you deserve someone better.”

“Are you really his cousin?!” I shook my head.

“Sometimes, I do wonder myself how someone as awesome as me can be related to him.” She smirked.

Not long after our conversation, the final match started. I wasn’t really paying attention to them, not even when Mike had his rebattal speech. Whatever other people around us whisper about how good the debaters were of both teams, DESI high will still win. That’s a fact that will never change.

Then came the last debater’s speech, the rebattler of SLI high. I didn’t really notice him earlier, but now that he stood by the podium and did his speech with full confidence in his voice and gestures…I can’t help but get awestruck by him. He carried himself with composure, not to mention, very good-looking too; and the fact that he’s a debater meant that he’s got brains as well. I wonder who he is…

“Mark is really sooo cool.” One of the girls seated behind me giggled.

“He’s so different on stage.” Added another one. “Who would have thought that he’s a lady killer off stage?!”

“Did you hear?! He broke up with Madison right before the debate started?!”

“No way!” She exclaimed, but then the other spectators who really came to listen to the debate shushed her down. “It hadn’t been a week since they started going out!” She continued in a whisper.

“Mark must’ve gotten tired of her already to break up with her earlier than he usually does with his girlfriends.” The girl made an agreeing sound.

“Whatever the reason, this is my chance to have a move on him.”

“Are you serious?!” Her friend said incredulously. “You know he’ll just break up with you in a week.”

“I know Cassie, but this is The Mark! You know I have a huge crush on him for the longest time. And what if I’m The Girl destined to change him?! That would be sooo awesome!”

“He’s not worth it, just forget about him.” She sighed.

“But I still want to do it.”

“You’ll just waste your time.”

“I’d rather do this and try, than not try at all.”

“You’re so stubborn.” Her friend sighed again. “Do what you want. But I’ll just warn you, when you come running to me with a broken heart, I’ll just laugh and tell you ‘I told you so’.”

“You know, you’re really cruel sometimes.”

“I’m just being realistic.”

Somehow, the conversation I just overheard ticked me off so much.

Not only is he an SLI high student, but he’s a womanizer too?! Womanizers are the worst kind of guys in the world! They should all just drop dead! Still…

“Kar, what do you think of a DESI student falling for a SLI student?!” I tugged and whispered at my best friend.

“Huh?!” She said distractively. Who knew Karen’s into debating too. She should have just tried-out for the club.

I just sighed and shook my head. I know the answer anyway: It’s impossible. A DESI student can’t fall for a SLI student, and vice versa, that’s just crazy. A DESI student is meant for another DESI student…or a student from another school, and never for an SLI one. That’s just how things are and how they should be. After all, it was said that the conflict between the two schools started because of a couple’s fallen relationship many years ago between a DESI and a SLI students.

Wait. Why am I talking about falling in love anyway?! This is the first time I’ve seen the guy! And he’s a womanizer!

“Jane, what did you just say?!” Asked Karen, finally giving me her full attention.

“I’m going to try-out for YDC next year.”

“Wha– Seriously?!” She gaped at me. “I thought you said debating doesn’t suit you. You turned coach down every time he recruits you to YDC!”

“…”

“If I knew that the only thing to convince you is having you experience, first hand, the excitement of debating…I would‘ve ma–”

“Don’t get me wrong. I still don’t think debating suits me…but that doesn’t mean I won’t try-out.”

“Say what?!”

“It just meant that I have other agendas…”

“You’re talking cryptic, woman.”

And I’ll make sure I’ll get what I want.
