CHAPTER 1

I never imagined my life would turn out like this, of all the dreams, fantasies, and paths I ever envisioned for myself none of them came close to this. But I’m getting ahead of myself; we have to go back to where it all began.

The year was 1705; I was working as a barmaid in a tavern in Halifax, Nova Scotia. That’s where I first met him; Captain Roger Nolan. There was no mistaking what he was; a pirate. You could see the danger and darkness in his blue eyes when he looked at you and you could tell by the way he dressed and if that wasn’t enough of a giveaway then the gold doubloon strung around his neck surely would be. That night he was drinking his usual rum, I was cleaning a nearby table when he came over to me and said, “Wench, get me another glass of rum.”

I don’t know what came over me but I slapped him across the face. In hindsight it probably wasn’t a good idea to slap a pirate but I did. He grabbed a hold of my wrist and looked at me with those piercing blue eyes and said, “I don’t think I deserved that.”

“Really? Because I think you did.” I said.

“Why’s that?”

“Just because I work in a bar it does not make me one of those wenches you take back to your ship.”

“I think you have the wrong pirate, I have never taken a wench back to my ship. I’m sure some of my crew have enjoyed the company of a wench while in port but not this captain.”

“And why is that?”

“Well, I’m sure it would seem stupid to you but even this pirate hopes that one day I will find the one woman who is meant for me.”

“I see.”

“I sense that I insulted you by calling you a wench and I beg your forgiveness because that is bad form my fair maiden.”

“Now I don’t know which is worse being called a wench or a fair maiden?”

“When does your shift end?”

“It ends in about 15 minutes, why?”

“Have a drink with me.”

“Why would I do that?”

“Because you have peeked my interest and it would be nice to have someone to talk to other than my crew whose stories I have heard countless times and they’re just as boring now as the first few dozen times I heard them.”

“So you want me to have drinks with a pirate?”

“You can always leave that part out, should anyone ask you were simply having a drink with a ship’s Captain, no need to mention it was with a pirate.”

“And what else do you expect in return?”

“I’m asking for a drink together and some conversation, nothing more. As I implied earlier, I’m not going to screw just anyone with two legs.”

“Fine, it’s really against my better judgment but I’ll have a drink with you when I’m done my shift.”

“Perfect.”

I had no idea what was the matter with me, first I slapped a pirate across the face and then I agreed to have a drink with him. I’m sure my father was staring down at me from heaven and shaking his head at me.

As I was finishing my shift Captain Nolan was watching me intently. As he was watching me his first mate Colin Dallas came over and sat in front of him and asked, “Captain, what are you doing?”

“I’m not sure how it’s your business but I’m drinking rum and enjoying the view.” Captain Nolan said.

“Since when do you enjoy the view?”

“Since right now.”

“What’s gotten into you Captain?”

“You see that barmaid over there?”

“Aye.”

“She slapped me in the face.”

“And you’re happy about this?”

“Well, no woman has ever dared slap Captain Roger Nolan in the face. There is something about her.”

“Don’t you think we should be going back to the ship?”

“I don’t think so, the cute barmaid agreed to have a drink with me.”

“Captain, we have things to do.”

“Oh Colin, remind me again why I made you my first mate?”

“Because you did.”

“Right. Now, we’re still in port for three days, if I want to socialize with the only woman to ever catch my attention than I’m bloody well gonna do it.”

“Yes sir.”

“Now run along like a good first mate and go have some fun.”

I finished my shift and as nervous as I was I went over and took a seat with Captain Roger Nolan. As I sat down he bowed to me and said, “Hello Beautiful.”

“Well, you’re getting slightly better at the names.” I commented.

“Do you have a name?”

“I’m quite sure that I do.”

“Care to share?”

“Why would I do a thing like that?”

“For starters, it would give me something better to call you than what I have been.”

“Kind of hard to argue with that logic.”

“Tell you what, I’ll tell you mine and you tell me yours.”

“Sure.”

“I’m Captain Roger Nolan.”

“Kirsten Brewster.”

“It’s a pleasure Kirsten.”

Roger kissed my hand, making me blush as I said, “I bet it is.”

“Where’s your family?” He asked.

“I don’t have one.”

“Excuse me?”

“My mother died giving birth to me and my father died at sea in battle when I was 14. After that I basically raised myself.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Thanks.”

“Your father didn’t happen to be killed by pirates did he?”

“No, he died fighting in battle but not a battle with pirates. Why do you ask?”

“I’ve killed many men in my days; I would have felt awful had there been a chance that I was the one who stole your father from you.”

“Since when would a pirate care about such a thing?”

“Good question must be the more human part of me peeking through.”

“Huh?”

“I wasn’t always a pirate. I didn’t just wake up and decide that’s what I wanted to be. I was in the Royal Navy with my brother and after the tragedy of his death I became the pirate that people know and fear today.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“Thank you.”

We sat there for a while drinking, I still had yet to figure out what the hell I was doing drinking with a pirate but there was something about him that was different. Maybe it was the fact that he had been in the Royal Navy like my father or just the fact the he genuinely wasn’t trying to get me into bed, whatever it was it reminded me that just because he had become a pirate didn’t mean he wasn’t human. He asked, “How old are you Kirsten? You look awful young to be working in a bar.”

“I’m 21, how about yourself?”

“I’m 25.”

“25 and a Captain?”

“Aye.”

“Impressive.”

“That I am.”

“Lucky in a way; I’d give anything to be out sailing and not have to live the boring life I’m stuck in.”

“A pirate’s life is definitely not boring but it’s dangerous.”

“I imagine it is.”

“Shall I walk you home? It’s getting late and it is the gentleman thing to do.”

“You’re a gentleman too?”

“Of course.”

“Sure.”

We left the bar and started walking towards the waterfront. As we got closer to the docks he asked, “Who is walking who home?”

“You’re walking me home, I just so happen to live near the docks where your ship most likely is.” I answered.

“Working tomorrow?”

“No, it’s my day off.”

“Any exciting plans?”

“No, I’ll probably just end up going for a walk.”

“Care for some company?”

“Don’t you have better things to do?”

“No, we’re in port for a few more days so the crew can rest up.”

“I guess it couldn’t hurt.”

“Well, I’m not going to hurt you so I don’t see how it could.”

“Fair enough. Come get me whenever you’re ready tomorrow.”

“Sounds great milady.”

I went inside and locked the door before going up to my bedroom and going to sleep.

Captain Nolan returned to his ship and went to his quarters. He poured himself a glass of rum while he started rummaging around for something. As he was placing things on his bed his first mate came in and asked, “What are you doing Captain?”

“For the love of god Colin, it is disrespectful to just waltz into the Captain’s quarters without an invitation let alone without knocking.” Captain Nolan said.

“Sorry sir.”

“What do you want?”

“Just wanted to see if your date went well.”

“I wouldn’t call it a date but it went great.”

“But she’s not here.”

“You know my views on that and imagine how much trouble you would be in had you walked in on that just now.”

“Point taken.”

“I’m going out with her tomorrow so it must have gone good enough.”

“Maybe your luck is changing Captain.”

“Maybe it is Colin.”

Colin left Roger’s quarters and Roger returned to making some plans and gathering the stuff within his quarters that he would need to make it perfect.

It was about 11am when Captain Nolan knocked on my door. I opened the door to see him standing there in his black shirt and leather pants, his black hair with bangs hanging in his blue eyes, stubble across his face making his moustache more predominant, the gold doubloon around his neck shinning in the sunlight, and a basket hanging around his elbow. He smiled as he looked at me in a navy blue dress, blond hair braided in a ponytail, and green eyes shimmering. He looked me over for a moment before saying, “Good morning milady.”

“Forget my name already?” I asked.

“No I didn’t forget your name Kirsten.”

“Just checking.”

“You ready to go?”

“Where are we going?”

“I figured that we’d walk down to the park and have a picnic.”

“A picnic with a pirate?”

“Aye.”

“That sounds great.”

We left the house and walked down to the park. As we passed the ships at the docks he pointed out the one that was his and naturally it was the biggest and most beautiful one that was there and it looked oddly familiar. He smiled as he saw the awe in my face at his ship. We continued to make our way to the park. The park was full of people as it usually was but we found a secluded spot and he placed a blanket on the ground which we sat on as he pulled some sandwiches and wine from the basket. We enjoyed the sandwiches and wine though I was quite curious to know how he had managed to pick my favorite. After we ate our sandwiches he asked, “How was it?”

“It was good but how did you come up with ham and Swiss on rye bread?” I said.

“A little birdy might have told me it was your favorite.”

“What little birdy?”

“I think I’ll keep that information to myself.”

“Really?”

“A pirate never reveals his sources.”

“Oh but of course.”

“Naturally.”

As so often as since I met him I don’t know how it happened but the next thing I knew Roger’s lips were on mine and it was magical; I never knew I could feel that way about a kiss and the fact that he was a pirate with a heart made it all the more special. If I was a person who believed in magic and true love I would have said that that was what this was but such things don’t exist right? The kiss itself was pure perfection; soft, sweet, passionate, and full of heart. When Roger broke the kiss he immediately said, “I’m sorry, I don’t know what came over me.”

“I wasn’t exactly complaining.” I said.

“Aye but like I said I’m not one who is looking to hope in to bed with someone if I was I’ve had my fair share of chances but there is just something about you.”

“I know what you mean, I’ve never felt this way with anyone but yet here I am having a picnic with a pirate Captain and very much enjoying myself.”

“I’m very glad you’re enjoying yourself because I am too.”

“Anything else planned Captain?”

“Um, well, I didn’t really know how well this was going to go so no. I mean if it was just me I would take you sailing around the harbour on my ship but I don’t think that would bode well with my crew.”

“Probably not.”

“I couldn’t hurt to just stay here for a bit and continue to enjoy each other’s company.”

“No, I don’t think that would hurt at all.”

We lay back on the picnic blanket our hands intertwined as we stared up at the sky. It was a simple gesture; holding hands but it was amazing how our hands fit together perfectly. Roger ran his thumb over the back or my hand in a circular motion and it felt so soothing. I could have laid down on that picnic blanket with him forever but it suddenly got cold and Roger said, “I’d say we should get out of here?”

“Why do you say that?” I asked.

“As a ship’s Captain I know when foul weather is brewing and we’re in for a downpour.”

“Figures.”

“Pardon?”

“I was really enjoying myself.”

“Well, no one said that has to end we just need to be inside somewhere.”

“Got somewhere in mind Captain?”

“We have two choices either a tavern or my ship.”

“Take a girl back to your ship? What would your crew say?”

“My crew would do best to mind their own business.”

“Is that so?”

“Oh yes, I’m a scary pirate and my crew knows better than to cross me.”

“You don’t seem that scary to me.”

“No? Shall we go then?”

“Sure.”

Roger and I got up off the ground and gathered the stuff from our picnic back into the basket and Roger than took my hand and led me back towards his ship. As we walked onto the ship it was completely deserted and I asked, “Where’s your crew?”

“Knowing the boys as I do they’re probably out drinking and having fun.” He replied.

“Must be nice.”

“Aye, when we’re in port for relaxation purposes it is usually nice.”

He led me into his quarters and offered me a chair which I sat down in. I looked around at all the maps, charts, sextant, compasses, a few chests, bed, clothes thrown about the room, and a cabinet that contained rum and wine. As I looked around I suddenly became nervous, I was in the Captain’s quarters on a pirate ship that was at the moment deserted. I had no clue what was going to happen so I asked, “You have my in your quarters, what now?”

“Nothing as bad as you might think. I can’t deny that for once in my life the thought of taking a woman to bed has crossed my mind but I’d much rather court you properly. Well, as properly as a pirate who is in port when he is can, if you’ll have me.” He answered.

“Is that your way of asking me to be your girlfriend or something?”

“Aye it is.”

“Well then, my answer is yes.”

“I was hoping it would be.”

“I bet you were.”

“Up for a game of passage?”

“A game of what?”

“It’s a simple dice game.”

“And what are we planning for?”

“Just playing to pass the time while we wait out the rain. Gambling is prohibited on the ship.”

“How do you play?”

“It’s quite simple; we play with three dice, you’re trying to get a double and if you do you add the three dice together and if your total is less than ten you win but if your total is more than ten or you don’t get a double than you lose.”

“Sounds simple enough.”

“You care to try? I can’t think of much else we can do.”

“Sure.”

Roger grabbed a set of three dice out of the drawer in his desk and handed them to me making some comment about ladies first. I took the dice from him and smiled. I rolled the dice and got snake eyes and a six for a total of 8 so I won. We played for a while and I won every hand and was really starting to wonder if Roger had somehow rigged the dice so that I would win but I decided that if he was going to rig the dice he would have been sure to make sure he was the one winning not the one losing. After a while of playing and listening to the rain hit the ship we couldn’t take our eyes off of each other and next thing we knew we were making out like a couple of teenagers. I don’t know how long we were making out for but soon enough Roger had moved to my neck and bit down; leaving a mark that I would have to explain at work the next night. We continued to make out when we were interrupted by Colin’s voice yelling, “Captain, are you busy?”

“Yes, I’m busy making out with my girlfriend.” Roger yelled back at him.

“How much have you had to drink?”

“I don’t know, like two glasses of wine.”

“So, you’re not hallucinating?”

“I would think not.”

“Are you decent?”

“Is the ship being overtaken by other pirates?”

“No.”

“Then what the bloody hell do you need?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Colin Dallas, for the love of god!”

“Sorry Captain.”

“You better be, you’re ruining my date.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Then come in here and see for yourself.”

Roger apologized to me and then pulled me over so that I was sitting in his lap. Colin walked into the room and looked at us and his mouth flew open and he had a look of utter shock mixed with a dumbfounded look on his face. Roger smiled as he looked at his first mate knowing full well that Colin had never expected him to find the woman he had been looking for. Roger then said, “I take it by the look on your face that you can see this beautiful woman sitting in my lap and that she’s not a hallucination?”

“Aye, I can see her. I just can’t believe it.” Colin said.

“Seeing is believing is it not?”

“I guess so Captain.”

“Where are my manners? Kirsten, this is my first mate Colin Dallas; a bit of a pain in my ass but he’s loyal. Colin, this is Kirsten Brewster; my girlfriend.”

Colin came over and took my hand and said, “It is a pleasure to meet you.”

“Thank you.” I said.

“Well, seeing as you are having a date or something and I can’t remember what I wanted the Captain for I’ll leave you guys to it.” Colin stated.

“Thank you Colin.” Roger said.

Roger shook his head at Colin as he walked away. He kissed me gently and then picked me up off of his lap and took my hand and led me to the deck of the ship. It had stopped raining and you could see a rainbow in the sky, the place looked beautiful after the rain. Just when I think we’re staying on the ship Roger drags me across the gangplank and down the street. He certainly knew his way around Halifax for someone who was only in port every now and then. He led me through town until we ended up at a tavern and thankfully not the one I worked at. We sat down at a table in the back and Roger walked over and bought a bottle of rum. He walked back over and placed the bottle and two shot glasses down on the table as he sat down. He poured us each a drink and said, “To a wonderful date and day.”

“I’ll drink to that.” I said and smirked.

We both drank the glass of rum in front of us. I smiled at him; I couldn’t believe that I could be this happy just sitting and drinking with someone. As Roger looked at me he had the same smile on his face. It was funny how it was just the night before that I had slapped him in the face and he had told me how he was looking for that one special woman and now it seemed like he thought I was that woman. I was in no way looking for a man or relationship but it seemed like I had found exactly that with this pirate. Roger poured himself another glass of rum and then reached across the table and took my hand in his. I was starting to enjoy the way Roger always wanted to be holding my hand. I’d been alone since my father died so it was nice to have someone care about me again. Roger looked me in the eyes and said, “I really want to make the best of the next two days. I have to leave port for a few weeks and go be a pirate and I want to spend as much time with you as I can.”

“I know what you mean, I never thought I’d have a man I wanted to be with so it’s just my luck that I find one and he’s going to run away in a few days.”

“Just for the record, I’m not running away.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Aye but I promise you I’ll be back for you.”

“How can you make that promise?”

“Excuse me?”

“You’re a pirate and danger and the possibility of death is in the job description isn’t it?”

“For one that doesn’t know what they’re doing.”

“And you know what you’re doing I take it?”

“Of course, I’ve been captaining my ship as a pirate since I was 18.”

“18?”

“Yes.”

“That’s impressive.”

“One has to play with the cards they are dealt.”

Roger leaned down and kissed the back of my hand that he was holding. It was a sweet gesture but I couldn’t help but feel sad knowing I only had two more days with Roger before he had to head out but he was a pirate and I knew that and that meant he had to be out pillaging and plundering; it’s what a pirate does. As if he could sense my sadness he placed his thumb from his other hand on my chin and lifted my face so I was looking him directly in the eyes. Looking into those blue eyes reminded me of the calm sea and I knew a pirate belonged as sea just as I felt the salt in my bones from my father being a sailor and I knew from a young age that was where he belonged. I sighed and asked, “Are you sure you won’t forget me?”

“How could I possibly forget the woman who dared to slap a ruthless pirate in the face?” He answered.

“I’m being serious.”

“Kirsten, I’m only going to be gone for a few weeks. I’m not going to forget the only woman I have ever had an interest in.”

“Good.”

“Are you going to forget me?”

“Now, how could I possibly forget the man who swept me off my feet?”

“Swept you off your feet did I?”

“Yes, yes you did.”

“Ah, a gentleman should always sweep the woman of his dreams off her feet.”

“A gentleman and a pirate, don’t those contradict each other?”

“Perhaps but I’m not out at sea right now so I don’t need to be a pirate. I can be a gentleman when a situation requires it.”

“You’re just full of surprises.”

“Aye.”

Roger stood up from his seat and pulled me up out of my chair and led me out of the tavern. At some point while we had been sitting in the tavern night had fallen. We walked through the empty streets until we ended up at the park that we had started our day at. The grass was wet from the afternoon’s downpour but we didn’t care as we lay back in the grass and stared at the stars. It was beyond peaceful just lying under the stars. Roger took off his jacket and gave it to me when I started shivering against him. He pointed out the constellations and Polaris and assured me that he could always find his way back to me by letting the stars guide him.

He got up off of the ground and he held out his hand for me and said, “I should probably get you home milady, wouldn’t want you to get cold and end up sick.”

“That wouldn’t be a good thing.” I said.

“No, who would take care of you?”

“I’m sure you would until you had to leave.”

“Aye that I would.”

“You’re such a softy.”

“Keep that little tidbit to yourself; it wouldn’t be good if anyone knew that the ruthless Captain Roger Nolan has a soft spot.”

“My lips are sealed.”

“Good. Now, let’s get you home.”

Roger intertwined his fingers with mine as we walked from the park to my house. The moon was bright in the sky and was lighting our path through the streets. As we passed the docks I took a moment to admire his ship again but still had this strange feeling that I knew it from somewhere but I couldn’t think of why I would know the ship. We got to my house and shared a sweet kiss and I asked, “Care to come in for a nightcap?”

“Not really the thing to ask a pirate.” He said.

“Maybe not but I’m not asking just any pirate, I’m asking you.”

“Fair enough.”

I walked into the house and Roger followed me inside. He followed me as I walked into the kitchen; he took a seat at one of the chairs around the table as I grabbed a bottle of wine and two glasses. I poured us each a glass of wine and walked over with them. I sat down next to him and we each sipped our glasses of wine but didn’t take our eyes off of each other. This had been the most perfect day I had had since my father died and I didn’t want it to end. I reached across the table and grabbed his hand, the first time I had been the one to do that. He looked at me and smiled, he seemed to sense that I felt the same way about him as he had shown that he felt about me. He looked around the room and asked, “How did you end with such a nice house at your age?”

“My dad built this house so when he died it was left to me.” I answered.

“It’s a nice house but tragic circumstances to end up with it.”

“I know you said your brother died at sea like my father but what about any other family?”

“I don’t remember what happen to my mother and my father fucked off when my brother and I were still fairly young. My brother was the only family I really knew.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“Nothing for you to be sorry about, everything happens for a reason.”

“What do you mean?”

“I believe everything that has happened led to each choice that led us to meeting.”

“You really think so?”

“Yes I do, I’m a big believer in fate.”

“Next you’re gonna tell me fairy tales are real.”

“I don’t know about that.”

Roger finished his glass of wine and got up to leave but I grabbed his arm. He looked at me quizzically and I said, “Stay.”

“What?” He asked in a very confused tone.

“Spend the night with me, we won’t be doing anything sexual it’s just we only have a few days and I want to be with you while I can.”

“I know what you mean; I just didn’t want to scare you.”

“Can’t be too scary if I’m asking.”

“I suppose not but what am going to wear, my pirate clothes aren’t exactly bedtime comfort.”

“Well, I suppose some of my dad’s old clothes might fit you.”

“Wont that be a little awkward?”

“No, they’re just clothes and I’d much rather you be comfortable if you’re going to spend the night with me.”

“If you insist.”

“I do.”

I went up stairs and grabbed some of my dad’s night clothes that had been left in his room since his death. I took them back down to Roger and showed him where he could get changed while I went to do the same. I walked up to my bedroom and grabbed a pink nightdress out of my closet and quickly got out of the navy blue dress I was wearing and put the nightdress on. I ran back down the stairs and found Roger standing in the hallway in a grey button up shirt and grey pants, he looked so much different and he almost didn’t look like the same person except for those blue eyes. He smiled at me as he stood there. I took his hand and led him to my bedroom. He looked around and saw my large bed and dresser. I looked at him and said, “It’s not much but it’s all I need.”

“I think it’s nice.” He said with a smile.

“It’s no ship.”

“A ship is great but here you don’t have an entire crew to deal with.”

“I suppose not but at least you have your own quarters.”

“Very true.”

We made our way to the bed and climbed under the quilt I had on top of it. Roger wrapped his arms around me and I laid my head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat, it was incredibly comforting. He started to stroke my hair and run his fingers through it. I couldn’t help but laugh against him as he was doing it so he asked, “What’s so funny?”

“I just feel like this is too good to be true and I’m gonna wake up and none of this real.” I answered.

“I know what you mean.”

“It is though right?”

“I certainly hope so but if it is I hope I don’t wake up.”

“For sure.”

“Do you work tomorrow?”

“Yea but not until after supper.”

“Alright, so you don’t have to get up early.”

“Nope.”

“Good, just making sure I’m not cutting into your beauty sleep.”

“Are you saying I need beauty sleep?”

“Not at all, you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met.”

“Am I?”

“Without a doubt and before you even ask, no I’m not with you for your looks. I feel a connection with you, I have since you slapped me.”

“Really could have ended badly.”

“Aye, it’s unwise to slap a pirate. We’re not exactly known for our kindness.”

“I imagine you’re not.”

“Well, I think it’s time for sleep milady.”

“Yes it is. Good night Roger.”

“Good night Kirsten.”

I closed my eyes and let the sounds of Roger’s heartbeat and breathing put me to sleep like it was a soothing lullaby.

I woke up the next morning still wrapped up in Roger’s arms. I nuzzled into his neck as I laid there with him. He started to move as he woke up and looked at me and said, “Good morning beautiful.”

“Good morning pirate.”

“It certainly is a good morning waking up with you in my arms.”

“You’re so cheesy.”

“Makes you smile though.”

“I suppose it does.”

“How was your sleep?”

“Very good, usually I wake up in the middle of the night cold and have to cocoon myself in my quilt but sleeping next to you was like sleeping next to a fire and kept me warm. How was yours?”

“It was very nice, can’t complain about having a beautiful woman curled up in my arms.”

“How often does that happen?”

“As you are aware, you’re the first. How often do you find yourself curled up in the arms of a man?”

“As you can imagine, you’re the first.”

As much as I didn’t want to, I crawled out of Roger’s arms and ventured to the closet to grab some clothes for the day and went off to get dressed leaving him to do the same. We met up downstairs in the kitchen where I made us each a plate of scrambled eggs and poured us each a glass of orange juice. I walked over and handed him his plate of eggs and glass of orange juice and he smiled and said, “Ah, cackle fruit.”

“Excuse me?” I said.

“Sorry, pirate lingo, that’s what we call eggs.”

“I’m just going to pretend I didn’t hear that.”

“Thank you for breakfast.”

“You’re welcome.”

We ate our breakfast quickly, though I suppose it’s not like it would really take all that long to eat scrambled eggs. When we finished our food we just stared at each other in silence. It was slightly uncomfortable, the awkward silence would have made perfect sense had we had sex the night before but we didn’t so it was just uncomfortable. Finally he broke the silence by asking, “What do you have planned for today.”

“I have to work from 5-8 but other than that nothing.” I answered.

“Ah, I do believe I see drinking rum in my future.”

“Is that really anything new?”

“I suppose not but there is a bar here with an excellent view.”

“View of what? The ocean?”

“No, a great view of my girlfriend.”

“Is that so?”

“Aye.”

We spent the afternoon together walking around town and grabbing lunch from the bakery and enjoying it in the park. We stayed in the park for a while after we had finished eating and enjoyed the peace and tranquility that we found with each other. Roger ran his hand over my cheek and kissed me. I had always been one to roll my eyes at couples making public displays of affection but now here I was taking part in just that and it didn’t bother me in the least; some other person could be jealous or disgusted and that was their problem not mine. It was as time stood still when Roger kissed me and that it could go on forever but that was not the case and soon I sighed as I knew that I had to go home and get ready for work. Roger walked me back to the house and waited as I got dressed and then walked me to work as the gentleman he secretly was behind the ruthless pirate front. When we were outside of the tavern I worked at he said, “I’ll be in later for a few drinks, closer to the time you get off so you can join me afterwards if you like.”

“There is nothing I would like more.” I said with a smile.

“I’ll see you later then.”

“See you later.”

He kissed me good-bye and walked off towards the docks as I made my way into the tavern. As soon as I walked in the door my best friend Missy Morgan ran over and asked, “How was your date yesterday?”

“How did you know about that?” I asked.

“I have my sources.”

“Let me guess, you’re the little birdy that told Roger what my favorite sandwich is?”

“Maybe.”

“You’re such a bad liar.”

“I know but you’re not answering my question.”

“It was amazing.”

“Are you seeing him again?”

“He’ll be in later for a drink and wants me to join him when I get off work.”

“Who would have thought, Kirsten Brewster has finally found a man.”

“Finally? You make seem like I’m an old woman who had never found a man.”

“Well, you kind of are.”

“I’m only 21.”

“And most of our friends were already married by that age.”

“That’s them not me.”

Roger made his way to his ship with a spring in his step and as soon as he had walked across the gangplank and was standing on deck Colin had run over to him and asked, “Captain, where have you been?”

“None of your business.” Roger answered.

“Did you come back to the ship last night?”

“Again, none of your business.”

“Of course sir.”

“Did you need something?”

“Just wanted to know the plans.”

“We set sail the day after tomorrow to go pillage and plunder off the shores of Newfoundland and then PEI and then we will return here for a few days before we set sail to the Caribbean.”

“Very good Captain.”

“If you’ll excuse me, I have matters to contemplate with myself before I head out to the tavern.”

“Of course Captain.”

Worked seemed to drag on forever that night but at around 7:00pm Roger walked through the door and took a seat at the same table he had been at two nights ago. I smiled at him as he walked in and he smiled at me as soon as he saw me. I walked over to the counter and grabbed him a glass of rum and took it over to him. He thanked me and I went back to work cleaning tables and waiting on the few customers who were in the tavern. I went over periodically to check on him but he seemed to be pacing himself with the one glass of rum. When I finally finished work I was happy. I walked over and sat down next to Roger and he put his arm around my shoulder. Missy brought us each over a glass of rum and winked at me. I rolled my eyes at her as she walked away as Roger noticed he asked, “Friend of yours?”

“I’m quite sure you already know that.” I answered.

“Whatever do you mean?”

“The little birdy who told you my favorite sandwich.”

“You figured that out did you?”

“Yea, she’s easy to read and never could keep a secret.”

“I’ll have to keep that in mind.”

“What for?”

“If I’m trying to plan something special for you I wouldn’t want her to accidently ruin the surprise.”

“Planning something special for me?”

“I imagine there will come a time when I will be.”

“Who knew a pirate could be so sweet.”

“I’m sure no one would believe you if you tried telling them that.”

We drank our glasses of rum and I really didn’t feel like staying in the tavern anymore so I said, “Care to come back to the house? It might be a better place to drink in peace.”

“If that’s what my lady wants then that what my lady gets.” He said.

We got up and Roger paid for the drinks and we left the bar hand in hand and walked toward my house. As we were walking Colin and a few members of Roger’s crew walked by on their way to the tavern. Everyone but Colin had a shocked look on their face; it must have been common knowledge among the crew that Roger wasn’t the type to screw around in port. It made me realize that he was being honest when he told me that there was something about me that had made him interested in me out of all the women he’s ever come across. We walked into the house and I grabbed out a bottle of rum and two glasses and we started drinking. After the first drink Roger sighed and said, “I’m going to miss you while I’m gone.”

“I’m going to miss you too.” I said.

“Do you work tomorrow?”

“No.”

“Good, I can spend the entire day and night with you before I have to leave.”

“That sounds good to me.”

We had two more drinks before we each went and got changed and went up to my room and crawled into bed. As the night before Roger wrapped his arms around me and I curled up into his chest and listened to his heartbeat. He leaned down and kissed me good night and I again let his heartbeat put me to sleep.

We woke up late the next morning. The sun was shining in the window causing Roger to yawn and stretch which woke me up from a very nice dream. He looked out through the window and said, “I never sleep this late.”

“Really?” I asked a little unconvinced.

“Aye, I’m a ship’s Captain; I’m usually up by the crack of dawn.”

“I suppose that is the disadvantage of lying with a beautiful woman; you don’t want to get out of bed.”

“Aye, you’ve got that right.”

“What do you want to do today?”

“I honestly would be quite content to just stay here in this bed with you all day but I’m sure we can come up with something.”

“I do need to venture to the General Store.”

“I’ve got no problem running around town with you.”

“Good.”

We reluctantly crawled out of bed. Roger went to get his clothes and I opened my closet and stared at what I had. As I looked inside the closet all I saw were dresses; some days I really hated being a woman. I looked through and pulled out a yellow sundress and quickly got dressed and found Roger sitting at the kitchen table dressed in his usual clothes. He was twirling the gold doubloon he wore around his neck through the fingers on his right hand. He didn’t even notice when I walked into the room but continued to play with the gold doubloon until I asked, “What’s the story with that gold doubloon?”

“This old thing?” He asked a little shocked at my sudden presence.

“Yea, that.”

“It was part of the first treasure I ever stole as a pirate.”

“And you made it into a necklace?”

“Aye, warns almost everyone that I’m a pirate.”

“Almost everyone?”

“Well, if I remember correctly you knew very well what I was when you slapped me.”

“Yea, well, you shouldn’t go around calling women a wench.”

“I’m quite sure I learned my lessons but then again had I not made that mistake I wouldn’t be courting you.”

“True enough.”

We left the house and walked down to the General Store. It was just a short walk from my house but it was a nice walk when you were walking hand in hand with someone you were falling for. Every time I was with him I forgot the fact that he was a pirate and just saw the man who wanted to spend time with me. We walked into the General Store where I picked up carrots, onions, potatoes, turnip, peas, parsnips, celery, beef broth, and beef. We walked back to the house and I got Roger to light a fire in the fireplace as I started to wash and peel the vegetables. I started cutting up the vegetables and throwing them into the big black cooking pot I had. Once they were all cut up and thrown into the pot I threw in the beef and beef broth and carried the pot over to the fireplace and placed it on the hook that was above the fire. Once the pot was over the fire and I had gotten a wooden spoon to stir it every once in a while Roger and I started to play passage.

We played several rounds of passage with me walking to the fireplace every now and then to stir the stew I was making for supper. I was even more convinced now than I had been the other day that Roger was somehow cheating so that I would always win but I still couldn’t figure out what the point of that would be since it wasn’t like we were playing for anything. I never accused Roger of cheating since it wasn’t like a pirate would admit to that anyway let alone when they weren’t gaining anything by doing it. Time was flying by quickly as we played our game and I cooked supper.

I finally served the stew I had made for supper and we both ate it with a glass of orange juice. I could tell by the expression on Roger’s face that he was impressed. He finished his first bowl of stew and said, “Damn woman!”

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Nothing is wrong but I think you should be on my ship cooking.”

“Not sure that would go over well.”

“Probably not. Don’t get me wrong; Joey is a fine cook but that stew was the best thing I’ve tasted in years.”

“I’m glad you liked it.”

“I do, is there more?”

“Yes, go help yourself.”

“Thank you.”

Roger ate six bowls of stew; I was impressed with his appetite and found it very flattering that he enjoyed my cooking so much. After we finished supper we decided to go for a walk around town. As we walked past the docks I heard Roger sigh, I could tell he was feeling bad about leaving in the morning but I knew he’d be miserable if he wasn’t at sea; it’s who he was, as the daughter of a sailor I knew that. We walked around the block until we got back to my house. We sat on the porch for a while watching the sunset. Neither of us spoke, I don’t think we knew what to say.

After sitting for a while Roger reached his hand over to mine and gave it a squeeze in an attempt at a silent gesture to reassure me that everything was going to be fine. It was going to suck being away from him but I had managed to live the last 7 years by myself I think I could get through a few weeks without my boyfriend. We soon went inside and went to bed because Roger would be getting up early in the morning.

Early the next morning I walked down to the docks with Roger. He was holding my hand in a way that I wasn’t sure he was ever going to let it go. Either that or he was trying to convince himself that I was actually there. When we got to the docks we stood at the gangplank going to his ship and he ran his free hand through my hair and then pulled me into a kiss. The kiss lasted a long time because it was going to be the last time he would get to kiss me for at least a few weeks. As he ended the kiss he sighed and said, “I will be back in three weeks.”

“Alright.” I said halfheartedly.

“I will come and see you as soon as I get back into port.”

“Unless you forget about me.”

“I assure you there is no force on sea or land that could make me forget you Kirsten.”

“Awe.”

“I’ll be back soon.”

Roger kissed me once more and then made his way onto his ship and started yelling at his crew to do what they were supposed to be doing. I gave him a wave good-bye and headed back home with plans to go back to sleep because this time in the morning was way too early to be awake.
