“How are you feeling this morning Alexa?”
She sat down heavily in her chair and didn’t remove her sunglasses. She looked at Colton and saw he was grinning. Well, at least he wasn’t mad at her for being late by twenty minutes.
“It was a little difficult to get up this morning,” she told him honestly. “But I’m here.”
“Do you need to take the day off?” he asked his face going serious. “If you aren’t feeling well you should get back in bed and take it easy.”
“No, no. I’m fine. Just a little tired. We were out till two am.”
“At the restaurant until two am?”
“No, we also went dancing at this small club in the Sobro district.”
“Sounds like you had a good time.”
Alexa finally took off her sunglasses. “Sorry about looking so – tired.”
“As long as you had fun.”
She smiled and agreed that she did have much fun. “Grayson is a great dancer,” she commented.
“I’m pretty good myself,” Colton preened.
“Maybe we should – go someday, the three of us,” she suggested tentatively.
“Or maybe only the two of us,” he replied back.
“I – I guess that would be ok too.”
“How about Friday night?” he asked. “I’m free.”
“Uh – yeah. Friday would be great except Grayson and I have a standing dinner date with each other when we aren’t on a date with someone else. So he might join us.”
“But you’ll be on a date with me,” Colton said confused. “He doesn’t have to come.”
“A date?” she squeaked in surprise. “Colton, are you asking me out?”
“Yes,” he replied with hesitation. “Am I not being clear?”
“I – you … we’re boss and employee. We shouldn’t be dating.”
“Don’t make me fire you,” he warned jokingly.
“No, no please don’t fire me,” she begged standing up. “I can’t lose this job.”
“I don’t want to fire you, but I do want to take you dancing.”
“We can do that as friends, right? I mean I know we would only be doing it as friends. You aren’t attracted to someone like me. I’m sorry for thinking … something else.”
“To be honest Alexa I’ve been attracted to you since I hired you. Not because you’re my personal assistant but because you’re beautiful and smart and kind.”
Colton chuckled at her expression of amazement.
“No,” she said shaking her head and looking away from him. “That can’t be true. This isn’t a funny joke Colton. I know no man like you would find someone like me beautiful. I am nowhere near the league of women you date.”
“You’re kidding, right? You are shorter than most of the women I date, but you’re pretty much everything else I love plus the intellect and sweetness.”
Alexa felt flush with embarrassment at his generous words. He chuckled again when he saw the color heighten underneath that gorgeous caramel skin. Christ, she was so innocent.
“I don’t know if we should muddy our professional relationship with a personal one,” she found herself saying. “I’m not a one night stand kind of woman.”
He stared at her for a moment. He was proud that she could maintain his intense gaze.
“Who said it would be for one night?” he asked trying to keep his tone light even though he was a bit angry about her assumption.
“Your history,” she said curtly. “You don’t exactly date someone more than once.”
“Well … that’s because I haven’t found a woman I want to date more than once,” he defended himself hotly. “I mean no woman thus far has had the intellect to match mine or the softness I am looking for.”
“Are you sure that is what you are searching for?”
“You know what forget I even asked,” he snapped.
When he saw her jump at his tone, he was immediately contrite.
“I didn’t mean to startle you,” he said softening his voice. “I’m not used to someone calling me a man whore.”
“You aren’t a man whore,” she protested. “You only want a woman to fuck.”
He winced at the truth of her statement. “That’s a man whore,” he told her.
“Oh. Well then … I don’t want that kind of relationship with you. I’d rather we remain employee and employer. Something more stable.”
“You’re right. I’m sorry for putting you in a position like that, having to date me or lose your job. I didn’t mean it. I would never fire you. You keep this place humming along smoothly. You mean more to me as my personal assistant than as a fuck buddy.”
She smirked. “That sounds like fun,” she teased. “But I guess that also means man whore.”
“Yeah. Only between friends.”
“Like friends with benefits?”
“I can’t do that either.”
“I didn’t think so.”
“I am going home early today,” he told her as he walked away from her toward his office. “So you don’t have to work the whole day.”
