Chapter 40

Alicia fumed as she paced the parlor for the past two hours.

She couldn’t show her face to the public. There were reporters everywhere and her association with Valtini didn’t end up well. She’d become a fugitive for associating with him.

What she’d gotten herself into?

When Alexander kicked her out of his mansion, her first thoughts were to contact her mother. But then, the reporters surrounded her and shot her with several questions. Fortunately, the cops, who were already there to escort her, came to her rescue and got her into a taxi.

She didn’t know what to do now.

One second her life was at the peak and the night after the party changed everything. She woke up to see her mom’s life being torn apart by the media and not less than two hours later, her life was turned upside down by Alexander.

She was still licking the wounds when the next bomb came in the form of her sex video. The BDSM footage had gone viral in less than an hour and when she learned about the scandal, it was too late to repair her damaged reputation.

They didn’t know who leaked the scandal video to the media and a few photos of her past sexual escapades leaked on the internet. She could do nothing to stop them. There was no way Seemus would give any more shares to her in the company.

Valtini had been furious when he found out about the scandal. Their conversation in the secluded club had led the police to reopen the Kaufman’s case and soon they would connect the dots. It would clear Kaufman’s name of the crime. Valtini had threatened that if he went to jail, then she would do too, because of her association with him.

Why?

At first, the media portrayed her as promiscuous, later when they learned about her involvement with Valtini the case took a different direction. She’d flood her apartment in the wee hours of the morning with Valtini and made it to this shit hole.

Her face was plastered on every news channel as a wanted fugitive and for the first time in her life, she didn’t have control over anything that happened to her.

Alicia screamed and pulled her hair. She’d been holed up in this creepy underground place for a week and she didn’t sleep or bath. Her brain was always thinking with a hope to find a loophole to escape her issues.

Valtini offered to take her away with him the last time they met. Alicia stopped him by saying they must wait until she’d married and divorced Xander, so she can have access to a huge sum of alimony, which would keep them going for years. She was also planning to get her hands on her father’s wealth. Alicia fumed as she paced the parlor for the past two hours.

They didn’t know who leaked the scandal video to the media and if that wasn’t enough a few photos of her past sexual escapades began to litter the internet. She could do nothing to stop them. There was no way Seemus would give any more shares to her in the company.

Alicia screamed internally and pulled her hair. She’d been holed up in this creepy underground place for a week and she didn’t sleep or bath. Her brain was always thinking with a hope to find a loophole to escape her issues.

Valtini offered to take her away with him the last time they met. Alicia stopped him by saying that they must wait until she’d married and divorced Xander, so she can have access to a huge sum of alimony, which would keep them going for years. She was also planning to get her hands on her father’s wealth.

She was never once afraid of his shady business and she liked having a powerful person like him around. There were a few times, she used her status in the society to finish his drug dealings. Now, she was ruined for the rest of her life.

“Alicia!”

She was distracted by Valtini’s booming voice.

“Valtini! What is it?”

“I’ve made all the arrangements for us to go to Mexico. We must stay low for a while, but we’ll be fine.”

Relief flooded Alicia, and she grinned for the first time in a week. “Oh, thank you! Thank you, Valtini! I won’t forget this favor forever!” She squealed.

“Yeah, right... We have four days to prepare everything. I need to take care of a few things before we leave. Don’t go out of this place until I come back,” Valtini warned and pushed her away with a disgusted look on his face.

“Sure,” she promised with a huge grin.

Her face lit up like a Led light and her spirit lifted. She didn’t have to go to jail anymore. She did the right thing by trusting Valtini. They’ve always felt like they belonged together. Her plans might be ruined, but no one can stop her from escaping now, she did a mental happy dance as she watched Valtini climb up the metal stairs and exit the room.

With a happy smile, she hopped towards her room and stopped in front of the mirror. She almost had a heart attack when she noticed her appearance in the mirror. She’d been so absorbed in her thoughts, she didn’t bother to take care of her beauty.

Alicia hated her look and wondered what would’ve Valtini thought when he saw her like that. This explained the disgusted look he sported when he saw her. Without wasting further time, she got to work on her grizzled hair, which now looked like a bird’s nest.

She must apply her hair mask to bring back the soft glowing look. A soft sigh left her lips as she unpacked the bag, Xander packed for her. She couldn’t give him her address so she wasn’t sure what all he packed for her. She could only hope her toiletries and makeup accessories are there.

A happy squeal left her lips when she found all her toiletries and makeup accessories dumped in her second suitcase. With great care, she lined up her toiletries on top of the small sink in the bathroom they had.

She stripped out of her clothes and wrapped a soft towel around her body, getting ready for her little spa time. Alicia poured the bath bubbles and a few drops of essential oil into the bathtub. A refreshing aroma of lavender filled the small walls of her bathroom and she sighed missing the spa treatment.

Alicia took her time to untangle the knots in her golden hair and brushed it until the strands were smooth once again. After a quick wash and towel drying her hair, she took the hair mask and applied it to her scalp, gently massaging it with her fingertips from root to the tip before covering it with a hot towel.

She would go to a spa once they reached Mexico, Alicia thought merrily as she applied the face mask next.

Once done, she climbed into the tub and settled with a contented sigh. With the calming aroma of Lavender lulling her to the sleep, her eyes drooped and Alicia fell asleep without realizing her impending doom.

The Sinclair family and the Finlayson family lounged in the living room after dinner.

Narmadha distributed the second round of desserts to everyone before sitting down on one couch. Samantha and Sasha sat on the floor next to their grandmother, who was staying with them until the wedding.

“I miss Sylvia and Marina,” Sasha pouted as she lay on her grandmother’s lap.

“I miss them too,” Samantha sighed. They had so much fun with the girls around. Only Gracie stayed with them as Antonio had to leave for Spain for an urgent meeting.

Andrea and the girls left after their engagement party and would join them for the wedding. Andrea was also busy with planning a wedding a week before Samantha’s.

Though Samantha offered to help, Andrea brushed her off saying she had hired a wedding planner and Samantha should only concentrate on resting before her own wedding. Eric, Gregory, Axel, and Henry were talking about the wedding venue and Samantha stared at the television with a bored look on her face.

It became a routine for Axel to drop her at home and stay for dinner. Sara and Henry joined them most of the night. They all would talk for hours before Axel drove home with his parents.

Her mother, Sara, Amelia, and Gracie were on the same couch browsing through catalogs, trying to decide what kind of set up they wanted for the wedding. Ryan had gone out with Julius again.

Samantha helped her grandmother up and led her to her room as the others retired to their rooms for the night. Now she was getting married, she couldn’t help the excitement that bubbled within her.

“Do you know you’re already glowing like a bride?” Her grandmother asked distracting Samantha from her thoughts.

“Grandma!” Samantha whined.

“Oh, yes. I can see the happiness and your eyes show how much you love Axel. He’s a good man for you, Samantha. I am so happy for you both.”

“Thank you, grandma. I am glad that you’re here for my special day.”

“My blessings will always be with you, my dear.”

Samantha nodded as she helped her grandma climb the bed and pulled the covers over her.

“Good night, grandma,” she whispered.

“Good night, my child.”

Axel was waiting for her at her doorstep when she arrived.

“Hey, what are you doing here?” Samantha asked.

“I didn’t get to say a proper good night. So I thought I’d pay you a visit,” he smiled as he pulled her into his embrace.

“Mhmm... is that the only reason you’re here?” Samantha teased.

“No, I thought maybe I would be lucky enough to get a good night kiss,” he added with a mischievous grin making her giggle.

“Good night, Axel.”

“Not that fast,” he said capturing her lips in a soft kiss. His lips felt like a brush of a feather against hers and when he released her lips, he cupped her cheeks and looked deeply into her eyes.

“What I’d do without you?” He whispered with so much love that Samantha felt her heart swell.

“Nothing,” she teased, earning a chuckle from him.

“That’s probably true. See you tomorrow at work,” Axel winked, his lips twisted up forming a mischievous grin.

“Okay. I’ll be continuing to work until a week before the wedding. I am not staying home like mom suggested.”

Axel chuckled. “You can work as long as you please. Besides, I can only have you all to myself in the office.”

“Axel!” Samantha slapped at his chest as his eyes crinkled with laughter.

“Good night, my love. I’ll see you tomorrow morning.”

“Good night,” she whispered and sighed in content as he kissed her forehead.

Gregory, who crossed the threshold to go to his room, heard their conversation and he couldn’t help but grin. His elder daughter found a good man, and he wished his other two children found a better match for themselves when it was time.

Nothing had prepared Alicia for this.

When she woke up from her relaxed slumber, she washed off her face mask and cursed when it burned. She blamed herself for leaving the product so long.

The real shocker was when she removed the now cold towel she wrapped around her head. She didn’t notice the several strands of her once beautiful hair sticking to the towel as she hummed her favorite song and closed her eyes, standing under the hot stream of water.

Alicia massaged her head gently and frowned when her hand came into touch with more of her scalp.

Scalp?

Why there are so many gaps?

Just then her eyes shot open with a wave of panic setting in. She looked down to notice her hair floating on the water and a few strands sticking to her body.

Alicia’s hands reached for her bald head.

She was hallucinating. This couldn’t be happening.

“Wake up, wake up, wake up... This is horrible,” she spoke to herself as she hoped for everything to change.

When nothing seemed to happen, she climbed out of the tub and rushed to the mirror. A scream tore through her throat as her eyes popped out, her heart almost stopped for a few seconds.

Her head was bald. The front side of her head missed several chunks of hair while a few chunks stuck to the back of her head. Her face was another story altogether.

Her skin was no longer silky smooth. Rashes and blemishes covered her face. No one could recognize her now. Her surroundings seemed to blur as her breathing quickened.

Alicia screamed again.
