Chapter 10

Was that permission? Lucien asked and I rolled my eyes - but I barely had time to do more than that before he pulled me in. He lifted his hands until they were at the back of my neck, his fingers tilting my head as he deepened the kiss. He then lifted me up and I chuckled into our kiss as I wrapped my legs around his waist. We parted for a breath before he proceeded to kiss me as he walked over to the bed. Lucien laid me down and climbed over me, kissing the side of my jaw, nibbling on the edge of my ear before kissing down my neck.

“Are you sure it’ll be fine to do this before we feel anything for each-“ I placed a finger on Lucien’s lips before I brought myself up to kiss them.

Don’t ask. I linked as I turned us over. I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t want to- besides… we’re werewolves.

I kissed his neck as well, sucking and teasing particularly where I would mark him. His groans beneath me made my stomach toil and I smiled as I turned back to his mouth. I don’t know whether or not it’s the mate bond or anything, but damn was my mate a good kisser. I sucked on his bottom lip and smiled as he turned us over, this time caressing the side of my cheek before placing a gentle kiss on my lips. He then lay down, his arm around me before pulling me close.

Are we sleeping like this? I asked and he simply grumbled his response. I chuckled before planting a kiss on the tip of his nose, earning a smile on his face as I snuggled into the crook of his arm. Good night Alpha.

I woke up feeling a little too warm - before I realized that Lucien and I actually shared the bed tonight - in close proximity. Not that I minded a little physical touch. Besides, there was nothing sexual about him hugging me at the moment. It was actually kind of adorable. I cuddled into his embrace and turned my head to look out the windows. I’d have to go to work soon.

Just as I turned back to look at Lucien, his eyes fluttered open and he smiled at me.

Morning. He greeted and I smiled.

Good morning. Are you dropping me off at work today? I asked and he nodded, before turning his head and yawning, stretching his arms out.

“Sleep well?” I asked aloud and he smiled in my direction.

“Better than usual,” he said before he turned to face me. “Breakfast?”

“Please,” I said and he kissed my forehead before getting up.

After Lucien dropped me off, I checked up on several different dogs in the clinic, playing with some of them and filling all their water bottles. I then moved on to the kittens, playing with some that had just gotten de-wormed and would be picked up later today.

“You look happy,” Katherine’s voice greeted and I looked up to find her with a cup of hot coffee.

“I guess I’m alright, despite a few things,” I said with a smile as I took the cup from her.

“So… I’m guessing things progressed with Lucien last night?” Katherine asked with a knowing smile as she sipped on her own coffee. I winked at her as I drank from my own cup.

“Not as much as you imagine,” I said with a smile.

“But progress is progress nonetheless,” she commented with a grin.

“If you say so,” I replied as I got up. “Where’s Desmond?”

“Busy, he said that he had to fetch some new supplies - he likes to run the clinic like everything’s his responsibility.”

“Well, I mean, this place seems to run on just him - why’s that?” I asked and Katherine smiled.

“Our clinic’s not exactly found near the main city, so we don’t get many visitors other than those that really know us - we’re quite good with canines after all.” I laughed at that.

“Anyways, I’m gonna have to go pick Desmond up, he’s just finished up and the bastard doesn’t drive.”

“What?” I asked, confused.

“Desmond never learned, so he walks here everyday - he doesn’t even shift into his wolf- all he does is walk, walk, and walk everywhere he goes- rain or sun, snow or not. One of these days he’s bound to get sick.”

“You guys really love each other, don’t you?” I asked and Katherine beamed in my direction.

“You’ll get there,” she said, winking and I rolled my eyes as I continued working. But a smile had definitely crept its way up to my cheeks. “Anyways, there shouldn’t be much going on- but I’ll try to be back as soon as possible- maybe even have a bit of a snack then.”

“Sounds good to me,” I said and she grinned as she turned to leave.

“See ya!” Katherine said one last time, I smiled before I got up and took a look at all of the pets. Desmond told me that most of them were going to be going to their forever homes soon, which gave me relief.

I went over to the front of the clinic and sat at the reception table. There really wasn’t much I could do for the day - other than watch over the other animals of course. Not that the thought of spending the day just playing with puppies and kittens was a bad thing. But it’s been the first time in months that I didn’t have much paperwork to fill out or get called to show up for something or talk to a realtor interested in an apartment- or…

I breathed a sigh. I guess it’s a relief though, plus, I’d rather be here than ignorant of whatever the fuck my sister was planning. Just as I was about to pull out my phone to annoy Lucien into entertaining me- the door to the clinic opened. In walked a man that was carrying a limp looking husky in his hands. For a split second - I thought he had brought a wolf in - but it was much too small…

“Is the vet in?” He asked and I stood up.

“I’m new here, but I work with canines a lot. My name’s Auden,” I said quickly before asking, “So what happened?” I asked and he sighed.

“Probably ate something bad - I leave him at home sometimes and when I came back - the house was a mess and- I don’t know, he’s been vomiting and acting weak and this morning he just wouldn’t get up,” the man explained and I nodded.

“Okay, why don’t you carry him to the back, we don’t have anyone else in yet, so would you mind helping me out a bit?”

“Not at all, please,” he paused, “Lead the way.”

I walked to the back room where we had the counter for surgeries and check-ups. The man laid the black and white husky onto it and I put on a stethoscope.

“I’ll just check on his breathing,” I said and the man nodded. It was only then that our eyes met, and I found them to be of fascinating colors - one was brown and dark and the other a vivid green. To be honest, this guy was actually good looking if I say so myself - and that’s coming from a werewolf. But he didn’t smell off or anything - humans were pretty cute too, after all. Great… I’m checking out someone else- Lucien would probably kill me.

Relieved that Lucien and the other pack members weren’t around to hear my thoughts, I began to work. There was nothing wrong with the husky’s breathing or his heart.

“What’s his name?” I asked as I moved the stethoscope around.

“What?” I asked and the man smiled at me as he leaned forward.

“Quietus, like saying Why with a ‘K’ in front of it,” he said and I raised an eyebrow.

“Interesting name - what does it mean?” I asked as I worked.

“I’d rather not say… Are you from around here?” He asked as I looked at the dog’s eyes, they seemed fine - he just seemed fatigued for some reason.

“No… I flew in about a week ago from New York,” I said and he chuckled. I smiled before I turned and looked through the drawers, finding a neatly sealed syringe and alcohol.

“Okay, um, just calm him down,” I said. Not like he might react from how unresponsive he is right now… but you never know. I added in my head as I finished cleaning the area to draw blood, he pet Quietus’ head as I performed the job. “You haven’t told me your name yet.” I said as I finished off, petting the dog’s head and smiling before I transferred the blood into a proper container.

“Pardon?” I asked. Man this guy is full of weird names.

“My name’s Ignus,” he repeated and I turned around to look at him, he had an amused grin on his face.

“Ignus like… the kind of rock?” I asked and he laughed.

“Sort of, but its more related to fire… it’s not important.” I thought for a moment.

“Well, Ignus, I should be able to get the blood results this week - I think, I’ll have to check that over - in the meantime, if you have a calling card, I can tell you when they’ll be ready… For now, I think it’s best to let Quietus rest, make sure he eats and drinks properly - and yeah, I think he should be fine,” I said with a smile.

“I don’t have a calling card- but I can leave you my number, if you have a pen-“

“I have my phone, here,” I said as I pulled my phone out of my pockets, I unlocked it quickly and handed it to him. He smiled at me as he took it.

I pet Quietus for a bit before I noticed something a little odd…

“Hey um, Ignus… your dog’s got a burn on his-“

“I found him just about a week ago - probably got beat up by his old owners…” Ignus responded sympathetically.

“Do you rescue dogs often?” I asked and he smiled.

“I guess I do, I rarely keep them around long enough… They usually go to another place.”

“So you’re like an independent shelter? That’s pretty neat,” I commented as Ignus handed me back my phone.

“Thank you for helping me, Doctor-“

“Just Auden. Most people don’t call vets doctors anyways,” I said with a shrug. Besides, I’m too young to even think of being called Doctor.

“But wouldn’t you like to be recognized as one?”

“I don’t mind. It’s a title, just like so many other honorifics are. I think I can do just fine without being labeled anything, don’t you think?” I asked with a smile, Ignus returned it kindly. “Well, anyways, I guess I’ll see you sometime this week again.”

“Of course, thank you for your help. How much will that be?”

I led Ignus out to the reception. He held the poor dog in his arms as he pulled out a few bills from his back pocket.

“Will this be fine? I can pay later-“

“It’ll be fine, besides, I wasn’t able to fix anything yet- I’m not done with the little pup,” I said reassuringly. Ignus grinned and ran a hand through his deep brown hair.

“Thank you again.”

The door to the clinic then opened and in walked Katherine and Desmond.

“Sorry we took a while- who’s this?” Desmond asked as he walked in and looked at the dog.

“This is Ignus and his dog Quietus-“

“We were just about to leave actually,” Ignus said, surprising me. “I’ll be back soon though. Thank you again.” Just as he was about to leave, I felt a strange feeling in my head. I watched as Ignus walked out the door and felt my vision haze.

“…Auden?” I heard Katherine call out but I couldn’t focus on anything else.

It’s a shame you don’t know. A voice rang in my head. Except it was unmistakably Ignus’ voice. I felt my senses come together as I ran out of the clinic, I stopped on the sidewalk and looked around. I sniffed the air- nothing. I looked around but there wasn’t a trace of him - not a scent, not a footstep.

What are you talking about? I asked loudly in my head.

Auden, who are you talking to? Desmond’s voice rang in my head just as a car pulled up and Lucien walked out. The doors to the clinic opened and out walked Katherine and Desmond. Katherine immediately made her way to me and wrapped my coat over my shoulders.

“Did anything happen?” Lucien asked.

“You heard me call out? All of you heard me, right?” I asked and the three of them nodded. “But did-“ No, they wouldn’t have heard- if it was a normal link then it was definitely directed at me a.

“Auden, what happened?”

“The guy that was in earlier- I- he smelled human- nothing about him was off and yet- I heard him-“ Desmond and Katherine looked at each other.

“Did you see him?” Lucien asked and the two nodded.

“Briefly. He left as soon as we arrived. Though he said he’d come back.”

“Something’s wrong…” I trailed off. Remembering that I had handed my phone to Ignus earlier, I brought out my phone and looked into my contacts. I spotted the letter ‘I’ and felt my stomach drop as I opened it. There wasn’t a number - not one I could use anyways - all he left was a note at the bottom of the list.

Shall we take a walk down memory lane? -I
