I checked on the wolf. It was only seven in the morning, but I had to report to the clinic by nine if I wanted to get any work done. The wolf had already begun to heal, which gave me great relief as I started to cut away the sutures I had placed. The internal sutures would be able to melt away - but I had to get rid of the external ones that were beginning to peek through.
“I’m guessing nothing’s hurting,” I said as I finished cutting off and pulling out the sutures. Thankfully wolves healed quickly, though I’m sure she was still a little light headed from all that blood loss. But I’m sure she’d be fine.
In response to my words, she simply barked.
“Unfortunately, though most of that’s been healed, I can’t have you shift for at least a few hours, wouldn’t want you tearing up those internal stitches, now would we?” I said as I got up and made my way to the kitchen. I placed my tools on a clean white towel and threw my waste material into a neat metal bin before I washed my hands.
“I’ll go ahead and make breakfast for you,” I said as I took a pan and heated it up. I grabbed a large bowl and filled it with water before placing it down in front of the wolf, who slowly stood up and drank from it, wagging her tail. She was half my height in wolf form, which meant that she was probably a really young wolf - after all, most wolves could easily be my height… and I was almost at six feet - but the Goddess chickened out on my final two inches.
“Do you want music?” I asked loudly as I made my way back to the kitchen. The wolf barked and I smiled as I turned on my phone and used a nearby remote to turn on the sound system before playing one of my playlists. She seemed to enjoy my music, because she started wagging her tail and barking and howling to “Animal” by Neon Trees.
She soon came by me and wagged her tail as she pounced on the counter.
“Bacon?” I asked and she barked happily as I began to cook.
“This would probably be less awkward if you were human right now, wouldn’t it?” I mused and she barked again as she made her way towards me and placed her paws on the counter.
“I wonder what pack you’re from… You don’t have a very familiar scent,” I said just as I heard a knock on the door. The girl got down from the counter and I briefly glanced her way before I went to the door and opened it up. I found myself staring at a man with fairly long blonde hair tied in a ponytail at the back of his head.
“And you are?” I asked.
“My name’s Xander, I’m one of the Umbra Pack’s deltas,” he greeted and I raised an eyebrow. “My Alpha informed me that you rescued his sister-“
“Right, have you had breakfast?” I asked, studying the man. He was definitely younger than me - probably fresh out of high school or something - and he had bags under his eyes - he’d probably been driving all night.
“I’m fine, I’m sure-“ I shook my head.
“Eat and then go, the poor wolf hasn’t even eaten yet and I still need to have her shift into human form to complete my check-up,” I said as I moved aside, allowing him to enter. He made his way inside and I closed the door, continuing to cook.
“Make yourself at home.” I began to continue cooking, toasting some bread in the toaster and getting out three plates.
“Xander?” I asked as I looked at him, he had gone to the windows to stare at the view of the city, he looked over at me.
“My name’s Auden. Could you tell me her name?” I asked, glancing over at the black carpet, my eyes widening as I realized she wasn’t there.
“Her name’s Lana,” Xander said. I placed the bacon into a plate and pulled out some peanut butter and jelly.
“Could you place these on the table? I’m just gonna go grab Lana from wherever she’s hiding,” I said and Xander nodded as I went into my open bedroom. Spotting Lana’s tail peeking out from under the large white bed.
“Lana, if you don’t come out, you’re not getting breakfast,” I said and I watched as she crawled out from under the bed, the bed lifting off the ground a bit. How the hell did she even get under there?
As soon as she got out she started to pouting. I stared into her now more noticeable green eyes and folded my arms over my chest.
“You know you have to go back home right?” I asked and she simply pulled the puppy dog eyes at me. I shook my head.
“Come on, breakfast is waiting and I’m not feeding you in my bedroom.” That’s unsanitary. I added in my head.
Lana eventually came out, but she growled the moment she spotted Xander, who bowed his head in her direction.
“Where do I put her-“
“On the floor, she probably won’t mind, right?” I asked as I looked at Lana. She barked and wagged her tail at me but as Xander moved to put her food on the floor, she growled at him. He paused and I took the plate from him and placed it on the floor right on the carpet she’d slept on last night.
She gladly began to eat as I fixed myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast. Meanwhile Xander seemed to try and resist the temptation to eat either that or he was being pre-occupied by Lana through the mind-link.
“Please just eat, I’m not asking for much right?” I asked and Xander looked at me and nodded before picking up some toast and slowly eating.
I rolled my eyes before I continued to eat and began fixing up another sandwich. I wrapped it up in some paper towels and handed it over to him.
“Take it for the road if you’re not eating now,” I said as I looked over at Lana who had finished off her plate by licking every crumb and probably grease on her plate.
“Okay, now I’m gonna have you hop into the shower and bring you some clothes. And you,” I said turning over to Xander, “Finish off the rest of the food on that table. Put everything in the dishwasher and we’ll be good, okay?”
“Okay.” He responded as I walked over to my bathroom, Lana following behind me with her tail wagging behind her.
I had her hop into my tub as I gave her a wash down. I had thankfully showered the night before and I finally got to her wounded area and washed down the blood that had begun to clump her hair. Some of the dead hair also fell away and she shed quite a bit of her brown and gold toned hair - which was definitely gonna be hell for me to clean up later. She barked as I rubbed her head with water.
“Now, I’m not gonna waste a liter of shampoo on your wolf, so you better give a shot at shifting. If anything hurts then, I’ll fix it after you’ve completely shifted back,” I said and she licked my face, making me laugh as I stepped back, turning off the shower head. I then set up a towel and a robe, hanging it on a nearby ledge before walking out of the bathroom.
“How’s she doing?” Xander asked as I saw him finish cleaning.
“She’ll be fine… Hopefully she doesn’t scream as she shifts, but I’m just letting her shower. I’m gonna grab her some clothes and then you guys can hit the road, I’ll hand over some antibiotics that I have on hand and some pain medicine - her side might be a bit sore and she might have bruising, but it shouldn’t be anything your pack doctor can’t handle,” I said and he nodded his head.
“Does your pack live in the city?” He asked and I laughed.
“Of course not, I’m only half a werewolf, consider me… human,” I said and deciding not to let him ask any further questions, I retreated into my room looking for clothes. I found a padded deep blue dress that could probably work for most sizes, unfortunately… the underwear side of things was a little difficult but I guess she could awkwardly ask to buy some…
I heard a knock come from the bathroom door and went over, opening it to find a young girl, probably only a little older than ten, standing in front of me. She had short dark curly brown hair that fell just above her shoulders and was probably only five feet tall, she was tanned - with lines indicating a sun burn and her nose slowly peeling.
“Wow… you’re a lot younger than I thought you were,” I commented and she smiled, the robe she had put on looked so large it made me chuckle. As I was about to give her the dress she gave me a huge hug, squeezing me tightly.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” She shouted as she hugged me and I suddenly felt my dress get damp. I looked down at her and noticed that she tears in her eyes but then she squeezed me even harder.
“You’re… w-welcome…” I managed to squeak. I mean she had basically squeezed it out of me. She eventually let go and I handed her my clothes,. “Okay, okay, stop crying and go change before you squeeze my eyes out of my body,” I said, as I rubbed the bottoms of her eyes gently with my thumbs and she released me smiling as she took my dress.
I left her alone in the bathroom and pulled my dark brown hair into its usual ponytail. I got into my bedroom and changed as well, pulling on a white turtlenecked sweater, a pair of slim-fitting jeans, and some black low cut boots. I prepared my handbag for the day, stuffing it full of my things and paperwork I needed to fill out yesterday that was now my homework of the day. Just as I was about to open the door, I heard growling.
Not from one person, no. I didn’t even hear two growls, I heard fucking three. I immediately opened my door and lo and behold - there were three people in my apartment. Two men and my patient.
“Okay, who invited-“ I froze. I smelled something that was a little too… sweet for my liking. I instinctively stepped forward but logically held back.
As man number two almost turned to see me, I ran into my room and slammed the door shut.
“Oh hell no…” I cursed. “No, no, no, no, no, no…”
I was not gonna let something else govern my life. I was not gonna let this happen-
Unfortunately for me, slamming a door shut doesn’t mean it’s locked.
And so the door opened.
