Chapter 16

I regret those times when I’ve chosen the dark side. I’ve wasted enough time not being happy

-Jessica Lange

Cherri Johnson

“So are we catching pizza with the others?” I was trying to make small talk since Jace was being unbelievably quiet, I didn’t like it one bit.

“Wasn’t invited” he replied short.

“Well that’s your fault, you wasn’t there but I was and I wanna go.” I leaned against the window and watched as the trees became blurs of green and brown, mixing together profoundly and making my head hurt at the same time.

“Are you sure you were invited, I mean they are my friends after all.”

I won’t lie and say his remark didn’t sting a bit because he was indeed right. They were his friends and not mine. The only person in that group I was a close to other than Jace was Dylan. Kevin seemed cool or whatever and he would occasionally speak to me in the halls. Ryan never even spared me a glance because he was too busy drooling over Melody and Gigi never paid attention to anyone but Jace and Alexus. Ramsey probably hated my guts for no apparent reason and I think we all know my situation with Alexus.

“Your right, not my friends, sorry.”

Jace quickly looked over at me and frowned. “Hey there sugar, I didn’t mean it in a bad way.”

Well what way could he possibly have meant it, there was no positive way to put it but I couldn’t even argue with him due to the fact that he called me sugar. It made the mucus monster come back for round two in my stomach and I wasn’t ready for it.

“Plus, I hang with them everyday, I wanted to spend time with my best blonde bud today.”

I rolled my eyes and stopped counting the cars that passed by.

“Jace, I’m your only blonde friend, idiot.”

He looked towards the roof of the car before focusing his attention back on the road.

“Your right babe, your the only one.”

“Ugh, don’t even try it Hindrix, your taking it too far with the name calling.”

I peeked over at him to see a smile spreading on his face.

“You know you want to be my baby Cherri.”

I pointed my index finger halfway down my throat and faked a gag.

“I’m sure your newborn baby wouldn’t even want to be your baby.”

Jace placed the one hand that wasn’t on the steering wheel on his chest.

“Your killing me softly babe, your killing me softly.”

“Drama Queen” I sassed and before I knew it we were in our neighborhood.

We pulled up to his driveway and I was the first one out of the car.

“Stop being so slow Jace, you move like my memaw.”

“Hush it Johnson” Jace said as he made his way to the front door and unlocked it with his keys.

I stepped in after him .

“Dad” he yelled out but there was no response.

“Typical” Jace muttered as we came across Mr. Hindrix knocked out on the couch. Numerous empty beer bottles laid around him and a half drunk one was hanging loosely in his hand. Jace snatched the bottle from the unconscious Mr. Hindrix and took a swig from it.

“If anybody needs this, it’s me.”

Jace placed the bottle to his lips again and took a long exasperating sip. I don’t know why but I kinda wish that I was that bottle so I could be close to his lips. Yes, weird I know.

He threw the bottle on the floor along with the others as soon as he finished and looked at me.

“Sorry for that.”

I shrugged my shoulders at him. “You don’t have to act perfect around me Jace.”

He nodded his head and grabbed my hand. I quickly snatched it and looked away.

He cocked his head to the side and I know that I had caught him by surprise.

It wasn’t that his touch gave me anxiety or made my skin burn on contact. I was just afraid of him seeing the band-aids, I was afraid of him knowing my weakness.

“Cherri, what’s wrong?” I shook my head and I could hear him sigh.

“Well come on, we can talk in my room.”

He turned around and my eyes grew big as I followed him up the stairs.

We enter his room and he closed the door.

“Well the weather seemed fine today, very toe twinkling don’t ya think.”

Jace’s face scrunched up “Toe twinkling ya say?”

We both stared at each other and then busted out laughing

“That was the dumbest thing I ever heard Cherri.”

I punched his shoulder and took a seat on his bed.

Soon I found him sitting beside me and I knew that things were about to get serious.

“Are you going to tell me or do I need to ask?”

I shook my head no before pulling up my sleeves and facing my arms toward him. Most of the bandages fell off as soon as I pulled my sleeve up due to the fact that I’ve been sweating every since I stepped into the car with Jace. I plucked off the ones that still stuck to my skin and exposed the marked red flesh.

Jace just sat there, not a word was said, no movement was made.

“He told me that it was just Alexus, he told me that you guys had a fight and that Alexus had started back cutting. “Jace eyes met mine and at that moment I wished I was dead, I wished that one of these marks on my skin could have ended my life. The look on Jace’s face was so sad and vulnerable that he made me want to dig a hole and lay there for the rest of my life.

“He didn’t tell me that you did it too Cherri but he knew didn’t he?”

I shook my head yes.

Jace stood up from the bed and paced back and forth.
“Fuck” he reached out and punched his wall. The impact wasn’t strong enough to inflict harm on him or cause damage to the wall but it did damage my heart.

I tiptoed behind him and placed my hand on his back. “I’m so sorry Jace, I didn’t think it would affect you like this, I was selfish for doing it. I caused pain to both you and Dylan.” A tear escaped my eye as I thought about how upset Dylan was earlier. It broke my heart to see two of the few people who care for me, hurt.

Jace turned around and cupped my face in his rough hands.

“Cherri, please come to me when you’re feeling like hurting yourself, don’t consult in that blade, consult in me baby.” He kissed away the tear that escaped my eye and I melted at the gesture.

“Thank you Jace, I literally don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for you.” I reached for the tall boy and he scooped me up in his arms.

“Anytime Sugar, Anytime.”
