Chapter 23

Nobody is ever truly happy in their life until someone else comes and shows them how to be

Cherri Hindrix

Ok Ok, let me stop playing games. We aren’t even on dating terms yet.

Cherri Johnson

My mom probably asked me what was wrong a million times between today and yesterday and I probably told her nothing the same amount of times.

“Mom, I’m fine. does it kill you that i’m smiling for once?”

She sipped on her pipping hot coffee while my dad looked through the paper.

“Sweetie, I’m sure your mom doesn’t mean it like that.”

He reached over to pat my head but I scooted back in my chair.

“See Dan, she let’s that Hindrix boy touch all over her but not her own damn parents.”

I choked on the pulpy orange juice as my dad once again tried to reach out to me.

“God just stop it already. Can you let me be ready on my own.” I begged the both of them.

“Dan, say something.”

My mom got up from her chair and slammed the empty coffee cup on the kitchen table like she does almost every morning now.

“Honey, calm down okay.”

I rolled my eyes and got out of my chair, having enough of my mom.

“Where do you think you are going Cherlyn?

I walked towards the door, ignoring her.

“Cherlyn, please don’t be difficult and answer your mother.”

I groaned and slipped my sweater over my tank top and walked out the front door.

I wasn’t in the mood for my parents anymore. I just can’t handle them with everything going on right now.

I walked up the Hindrix front porch and rang the doorbell.

Mrs. Hindrix came to the door and smiled sweetly at me with a big bag dangling on her shoulders.

“Oh hey hun, I was just heading to the hospital.”

She patted the sparkly unicorn bag and opened the door wide. “Jace is upstairs, you can go in and see him if you want, I should be on my way.”

She scooted pass me and shuffled her way to her car.

I walked in the house and closed the door behind me.

I walked towards the stairs and stumbled across an empty bottle, tripping and falling on the floor.

“Fudge!” I yelled out as I laid out on the floor in pain.

Jace came running down the stairs and stopped as soon as he saw me.

“Well I knew you’ll fall head over heels for me sooner or later Johnson.”

He pulled me up by my hands then grabbed my waist and pulled me closer to him, making my breath get caught in my throat.

“Yeah okay. Say what you want to say pretty boy.” I grabbed his hands and removed them from my waist.

He went around me and started to pick up the empty and almost empty beer bottles up of the floor.

“So what brings you to my humble home sugar?”

I slipped my sweater off and wrapped it around my waist.

“My parents wanted to give me another lecture today, I thought yesterday worn my mother out but I forgot how persistent she is.”

Jace shrugged his shoulders as he threw the last of the beer bottles in the trash.

“Your mom is honestly a piece of work Johnson.” He placed a kiss on my temple as I groaned.

“But whenever you feel like it’s getting rough, just did what you did today. You know I’ll always be there for you.”

I pressed my eyes closed as I leaned on his warm body. I soo badly want this to work with Jace but in order for that to happen, I have to be completely honest with him.

He needs to know about how me and Melody go way back.

He needs to know why I don’t want to be touched.

He needs to know why Colby Faulkner is one of the demons I just can’t seem to hide away from.

There’s a lot of things that he needs to know but I know that now isn’t the right time to tell him. We aren’t even really together are we?

“Cherri, are you okay?”

I snapped my head towards Jace, realizing his presence.

“Yeah I’m fine, Whats up?”

“Then care to explain why that fag is in your yard.”

I was about to scold Jace for saying such a disrespectful word when Colby came into my peripheral vision.

“Oh god, he’s going to be the death of me.”

I unwrapped my sweater from my waist and pulled it roughly over my head.

’Cherri what in the hell is going on?” I opened the door but he pulled me back.

“I’m going to go handle this, I’ll be back in a minute.”

I opened the door and marched right up to Colby who was leaning on the door to my house.

I turned around to see Jace standing outside his front door, making no attempt of keeping the conversation between me and Colby private.

“Hey, eyes over here cupcake.”

I slowly turned to face Colby and almost fainted at the sinister smile he wore so proudly on his face.

“So I already had a talk with that friend of yours, Melody and she agreed to it already and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll agree to it too.”

I crossed my arms over my chest, trying to be intimidating but I’m sure I failed because i could feel myself practically shaking in my converse sneakers.

“Why won’t you just leave me alone Colby, and leave Melody out of this.”

He shook his head slowly as he began to slowly circle around me. “Ya know that Melody girl is really trying to be a good friend, I’m guessing for all those times she sucked me up behind your back.”

I scrunched my nose as I stood still in one place as he circled around me like a vulture circling it’s prey.

“I don’t care what you and Melody did. That was your relationship with her, not me.”

He snickered and stopped in front of me.

“You just don’t know the number of times I smashed Melody while I dated you.” She was just too easy and you were and probably still is just too dumb.”

My face burned hot as I thought of all the times Melody ditched me for hair appointments and family issues when she was probably screwing around with Colby.

“Anyway, I’m hosting this party while my folks are out and I need a couple of girls to switch around in some skimpy outfits and pass out shit.”

I rolled my eyes

“Why won’t you just have a table and set the stuff out on there like any other party?”

He grabbed the back of my neck and pulled me closer to him. “Because I don’t want too now please sweet cheeks, corporate with me.”

He stroked my hair and I pulled away quickly from him, rubbing my hot and probably bruising neck.

“I’ll have Melody drop the outfits to you soon, I’m sure you two have a lot to talk about.”

He walked towards his car but I turned away as soon as I saw him enter it and close the door. Jace walked up to me and threw his hands in the air but I stopped him before he could say anything.

“There’s a lot that I want to tell you but I can’t right now, just know I need your support.”

He scratch the back of his neck as he looked past me. “I don’t know about that Cherri. I need to know what happened between you and that dick because I don’t know if I can keep my composure next time.”

I was relieved that he didn’t hear the conversation that just took place but it warmed my heart that he cared so much for me already.

I stood on my tip toes to kiss his cheek then I ruffled up his hair a little. “I love how you get protective over me now.”

He grabbed by elbows and squeezed them tight enough to make my knees wobble.

“I became protective over you the moment you almost fell out your window.”

I awed as he let me go to place a quick kiss on my nose.

“I promise I won’t let nothing get in the way of us, not after I finally got you.”

He turned his back towards me and walked back into his house, locking the door.

I couldn’t believe that there was an us. A me and a Jace Hindrix. Together.

A bubbly feeling erupted in my stomach as I thought about Colby. As long as he’s here then there is no way that things are going to work between me and a Jace.

Guess I got to get rid of him.

And I know just the person to help me out.
