Chapter 23

I trudged back into the house and right into Avery’s arms. It’s been such a long day, after getting that call from the Head Elder to heal that woman whose mate betrayed my son, I was beat. My head was racing from all that has happened lately, with Connor coming home unconscious I didn’t know what to do but worry.

“Has he waken up yet?” I looked up at Avery but he just closed his eyes and held me tighter forcing my head into his shoulder. My shoulders sagged.

“Why?” I whimpered.

A throat cleared behind me and I turned away from my mate to see who it was and was surprised to see that it was Head Elder.

“Mr. Heath?” I questioned with wide eyes.

He looked at me with a blank expression before turning his gaze up towards the stairs.

“Is he up there?”

“Don’t you think you’ve done enough?” Avery growled.

“It was not I who deceived you Avery, so I would appreciate it if you would take your anger somewhere else.” He said plainly brushing Avery’s anger off like it was nothing.

My mate bared his canines at the Elder but Mr. Heath just sighed as if exhausted.

“I will find him myself then.”

Avery threw me behind him and marched towards the Elder.

“Like hell you will”

“Avery!” I warned but he wouldn’t listen.

“Boy please, I’m in no mood”

“Neither am I!” Avery growled. He was now in the Elder’s face, they both stood at the exact same height.

“If you do not move aside your son will die!” Elder raised is voice just a fraction but it boomed in my head and shook throughout my body.

“Is that a threat” Avery barked.

“No, it is a fact now move.” He pushed my mate which seemed like a light touch, out of the way but Avery went flying down at my feet. I bent down to him and helped him up.

“I warned you, he’s not the Head Elder for nothing. You have to be careful around him” I whispered. Avery’s blue eyes flickered towards me for a moment before they followed Mr. Heath up the stairs.

“What is he up to?” my mate asked quietly to himself as he walked behind the Elder towards our son’s room.

When we reached Connors room I saw the elder kneeling over his bed and looked deep in thought.

“What are you doing?” I asked him walking to his side.

“He’s near death” was all he said.

I whimpered softly as I knelt next to him and took my sons hand.

“No” the feel of my mates warm hands on my shoulders made me fall into him for strength.

“How do you know that?” Avery asked.

“Because his time is waning” he told us.

“And you’re saying you can help him?” Avery inquired.

He didn’t answer, he just lifted his hand over Connors head while we watched. He closed his eyes and dropped his head as I felt a strong sort of power course though the room. It had the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end.

Suddenly I watched Connors lax face start to tighten in pain.

“Stop, you’re hurting him” I exclaimed.

“He was already in a lot of pain to begin with but he’s starting to awaken and feeling it now.” He explained.

The power increased around the Elder and I could feel Avery’s hands tightening on my shoulders.

“But he’s going to be in a whole lot more than this” was all he said before a blinding light emitted from the Elders hand and Connor let out an ear shattering scream.

They treated him like a dog but he never complained because complaining would end up in a painful beating. His skin was horribly bruised and scarred from there inhospitable treatment but it healed remarkably fast. They would take him out of his cell just to make him fight with others much bigger and stronger than him. All day he would suffer from an endless beatings at what they liked to call lessons.

Never cry.

He learned this when they would whip him if he even uttered a whimper. Not that he had tears left to shed anyway.

But after being with the ‘Commander’ and suffering from his version of training it wasn’t long before he turned him into a killer, one that only obeyed orders and never disobeyed. They had bred a monster. From the way he moved and fought, it was soon that no one wanted to give the boy ‘lessons’ afraid of losing their life. He was a living breathing killing machine with lifeless eyes who gave up his humanity long ago.

“I like that look in your eyes, mutt” the Commander said circling around the boy with the lifeless expression. He had turned a year ago and had to be broken in once again do to his stubborn wolf. He was a treasure to the man since he turned out to be an Elder of all things, the one elusive wolf of all. Commander took his sliver nightstick and pressed the tip to Teagan’s chest testing his body, he was satisfied when not a muscle flinch as his skin burned. Slowly he dragged the stick across his skin as he walked behind him and leant in next to his ear.

“You’ve been a very good obedient dog this past year, now there’s your reward.” The man whispered in his ear. The boy glanced up at the chained werewolf a yard from him. The feel of his silver masked that covered half his face. “Kill it” the order was sharp but soft and Teagan automatically took off at a full run and shifted mid jump tackling the startle male to the ground and took hold of his neck with his strong jaws and let his body exploded in flames immersing the chained wolf in them till there was nothing but ash.

Laugher in the background caught his attention and he trotted back towards his amused master and sat at his feet as the man turned towards the stunned audience and stalked off is satisfaction.

“Good boy”

I looked up to find the Commander standing in front of me. My body was skewered with silver stakes as I was pinned to the wall.

“After all the hard work I went through to make you my perfect little pet and you go and ruin it by mating with a mutt.” He sighed. “Now we have to start all over.”

“Go to hell” I spat through my raw throat.

He tsked at me and reached behind him for something.

“I brought you a present” he said lightly.

I narrowed my eyes at him as he brought out a shiny piece of metal and held it out in front of me.

“Don’t you remember?” he asked and stepped up to me and moved the metal closer to my face.

The mask.

“Now be a good boy and obey your master” he demanded as he put the mask over my mouth even as I growled at him. My eyes glared into his face as locked it in place. The Commander just smiled at my hate filled gaze.

“Oh I love those eyes of yours, they make me want to tear your soul to shreds” he whispered gripping a handful of my hair and yanking my head back. The mask was making it hard to breath as my skin burned.

“I’ll be back my pet, you just sit and stay” he mocked while turning and walking out of the room.

The heavy familiar door shut behind him and I stood pinned to the wall in the dark with a silver mask burning my nose and mouth. I finally escaped this place but I’ve never been free, always bound by someone’s chains. Memories of how Connor was put through all that pain earlier brought me back. I had to hardened my heart and mind again, this couldn’t happened again, I won’t let it. This was why I didn’t want to mess with that mate business. It made me weak and vulnerable, the commander was right about that. I dropped my head down to my chest feeling the pain of the mask burning my collarbone.

I hated the hunters, I hated the Commander, and I hated who ever put me on this stupid earth. Was I born just to suffer, was this my purpose? I could feel myself losing control as my body began to shake with rage. It was boiling up in my blood,

“I’ll kill you all and bathe in your blood” I growled my vision engulfed in red.
