Chapter One

I should be sleeping. I should be so deep into my dreams that I shouldn’t be able to hear the pounding bass of the party that’s going on right next door.

But here I am, wide awake.

The infamous Boon brothers are, once again, throwing one of their ridiculously stupid, outdated, and cliché parties.

At this point, I’ve tried every tactic since the ninth grade: earplugs, music, calling the cops, switching rooms, and even the whole suffocation by the pillow. But nothing worked, which leaves me with the most obvious—face to face confrontation.

Which is something I’ve never done before, at least not with the Boon brothers. For the last eleven years of my life, I’ve been living next to the four of them and I have not once spoken to anyone of them. Not at school, not when I’m outside with my brother, not even when one of them has looked directly at me.

I know it’s childish, but its how it’s been since they drove up in the moving truck and practically stole all of my female friends with their powers of persuasion. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard "oh Hope, you are one lucky girl. Living next to the Boon boys must be a blessing."

Nope, just a long, torturing curse.

Micah, my little brother, groans, bringing me back to reality. I slide from my covers and move towards his bed side, watching the monitor as the green line goes up and down to the beat of his heart. He lies still, and I use this time to take in the effects of the last six weeks; he’s pale. More so than ever, and what used to be his dark brown hair is now bald skin covered by a green and blue stripped beanie.

Ever since the doctors diagnosed him with leukemia, everything in our family has kind of fallen apart over the last three years. Our bills went up while my parent’s income dropped, and eventually, they just broke. My dad divorced my mom and he left us, then she moved Micah here so she could continue to work from home without having to make multiple trips to the hospital.

Since then, he’s shared a room with me. And I wouldn’t have it any other way, until now, when it almost seems like the music next door has gotten increasingly louder. If this is how it was going to be, than maybe him being at the hospital was the better choice. I didn’t need him having a rough nights sleep on top of barley being able to live.

I press a soft kiss to my brothers’ temple and I make my way downstairs, shoving each and every rational thought aside. When it comes to my brothers heath, all bets were off.

I slide into my slippers and step out into the chilly air. My teeth instantly start chattering, but it doesn’t derail my mission.

It takes all about a minute to walk towards the boys’ simple, yet extravagant two story house. They had to of had the nicest house in the neighbor hood, complete with the white paint, a porch that wrapped around the whole house and large glass doors. On top of being extremely gorgeous, they were extremely rich. Go figures.

My eardrums ring as I get closer, making me realize I don’t even have a plan. What the hell am I gonna say to the boys I’ve never even spoken to? Am I supposed to be rude or—

“Hope Benson,” a deep voice says slowly. “Either this is a dream, or you’re actually standing at my front door.”

I flip around and standing before me is none other than Miles Boon, the most dominant of the four brothers.
Miles is well over six feet tall—way taller than me. His back is broad. His hair is long, a beautiful caramel color, and almost always pulled back; his arms roped in muscle; and he had some growing stubble that hid what I just knew was a strong jaw.

Miles was beautiful. And he was intimidating. Not just how he looked, but how he acted too.

I watch his eyes travel up and down my body and I suddenly remember what I’m wearing; star wars pjs that I got in middle school. Yeah, I never exactly thought anyone else would ever see them.

“How do you know my—”

“We’ve lived next to each other for eleven years, Hope. Most would say that by then we’d be on a first name basis, but you aren’t that type of person, are you?” He bites, his tone rather harsh.

That bastard.

“You’re having a party, on a Tuesday?” I ask, crossing my arms. Although no matter what I do, this brooding boy will always intimidate me and my 5′6 height.

“Not me. My brothers, but yes, I am attending.” He says smoothly. “Why, wanna join?”

I shake my head with a hard no. Attending one of their stupid parties is the last thing on my mind. “That reminds me, could you please tell your selfish, disrespectful band of brothers that they need to turn the music down?”

He raises an eyebrow, almost amused. “Why would I do that?”

“Some of us actually have things to do tomorrow, like school, and would really appreciate a good nights sleep.” I say, my tone nothing above normal. I’m just talking, it’s all good.

“No, I think we’re good.” He says, shrugging his defined shoulders. He knocks back a swig of beer from his can before staring me down with his brooding eyes.

My thoughts travel back to my brother and his frail body laying in bed. Suddenly I’m very angry. Not a calm angry, but an I’m about to rip you a new one angry.

“I swear to god, if you and your stupid party wake up my brother, you will have another thing to deal with!” I yell, all the air leaving my lungs.

Miles’ features drop and everything goes rigid. He looks up at my house than back to me. This is what I wanted to avoid; pity. Miles Boon is the last person I need this from.

“I’m sure we—”

“Just forget it,” I say, cutting him off. I can feel his eyes burn holes into my back as I walk off, steam shooting from my ears.

I make my way back towards my brother, extremely happy that he is still sleeping peacefully. Or as peaceful as he can get.

Suddenly, the music next door gets quite. A smile forms on my face. I actually got them to listen to me. All the nights filled with tossing and turning, who wouod have known that I could have been sleeping and all I had to do was tell Miles Boon off.

I try to be surprised, but it was impossible. I knew somewhere, deep, deep down, that Miles Boon was more than a smirk.
