Chapter 1 - Jude

Jude stared at the moving truck as it pulled into the driveway next door. He had heard that someone had bought the house, but it had been vacant so long, he had given up hope that anybody would want it. It was a pretty little house, but it needed a ton of work. He pitied the person that had taken on a project that large. It would take a lot of time and money to complete the work it needed done.

When the truck stopped, two large guys stepped out and moved to the back, pulling up the rolling door. Jude watched for hours, as piece after piece of flowery furniture was carried into the small house. Fascinated, he couldn’t wait to see what crazy person was moving in.

In a couple hours they were done, and they pulled the rolling door down. As he watched, the men climbed back in the truck and were driving away. Jude had washed his Harley and cut the grass, in the time it had taken to empty the truck. When no one else came or went, he gave up watching. Climbing on his bike, he headed out to run the few errands he needed to do.

The grocery store was first. Jude ate out tons, so he pretty much only needed snacks. Even he’d admit he was a good cook, but with only him to cook for, he rarely bothered. His next stop was to the beer store, he was usually on his Harley, so it was impossible to cart the cases home. What he did instead was pay one of the stock boys to deliver it after his shift, it worked out well for both of them. The kid made a couple bucks, and Jude didn’t have to take his truck to cart the beer home.

An hour later he was back. He unpacked the small amount of groceries he had bought, then headed outside, when he heard the roar of a motorcycle. Glancing up, he saw Navaho headed his way. The biker pulled in his driveway, shut down his Harley, and climbed off.

Navaho was a member of The Stone Knight’s, the local biker club. They were all decent men, and Jude hung out with them often. They were bugging him to prospect, but Jude wasn’t sure he would fit in. Most of the guys were honest, hard-working men, some were even military men, but Jude had done prison time. He didn’t want to bring that kind of bad to a club that was respected.

Jude greeted Navaho with a grin and a half hug. The man didn’t talk much, but he was good company. Navaho took a seat on one of the two chairs on the porch, while Jude went in for a six pack. Once it was on the porch between them and they each had a cold one, they got comfortable and shot the shit.

A couple hours later a sleek black car pulled up to the curb in front of the house next door. An old blue clunker, that sounded like it would backfire and take out the block, pulled into the drive. A big man in a suit got out of the fancy black car, while a tiny pixie, with long dark hair and glasses, got out of the clunker. She had her hands on her hips and her head tilted to the side, as she studied the small house.

“Hmm,” Navaho mumbled. “Someone finally had the guts to buy that shit hole?” he asked, as he watched the scene unfolding in front of him. Jude knew they couldn’t be seen as huge evergreen shrubs surrounded his porch.

“Guess so,” Jude replied with a shrug. “Moving truck came today, flowery shit went in, then the moving truck left. If that idiots moving in with her, he’s either gay, or he’s whipped,” he chuckled. Navaho snickered beside him.

The couple chatted for a minute, then the man hugged the pixie, kissed her on the head, then ruffled her dark curls. She fumed as she tried to swat him, but missed and fell flat on her ass. The man sighed, then helped her up and attempted to dust her off. That didn’t go over so well, as they watched her kick him in the shin. Navaho chuckled again beside him.

“Guess they’re not a couple,” Navaho commented.

The man headed for his car, and the woman turned and headed for the steps. She tripped on the first one, but caught herself on the railing before she fell again. The man was already turning to head back, but she waved him off.

“Christ she’s a klutz,” Jude groaned, and Navaho nodded in agreement.

“You’re going to have to keep on eye on that one. She’s likely to burn down the house and take out yours with it,” Navaho told him seriously.

“Fuck off,” Jude huffed in annoyance. Then they watched as the man drove off, and the woman disappeared into the house.

Little did Jude know, that tiny pixie was about to become a huge pain in the ass.
